Guest Beastalentier Report post Posted March 9, 2008 http://www.nbc5.com/morning/15506507/detail.html I'm not currently based in the northwest suburbs at the moment, but my extended family is, and I think it would be great to see some of these cities put the squeeze on Stroger and Daley. A 10% sales tax is patently absurd, and it is going to start seriously hurting businesses near the county lines. It already has: Randhurst Mall, where I spent a good deal of my childhood, is set to be razed because everyone realized they could drive a few miles up Rand Rd. to a nicer mall in Lake County with lower taxes. It'd be one thing if we knew that the tax money was going to good causes, but it's just paying for Todd Stroger to give his nieces and nephews high-paying do-nothing jobs. I remember reading about a proposed "Lincoln County" in the past, comprising Palatine, Arlington Heights, Schaumburg, and the rest of what's listed in the article, so maybe this is finally the breaking point. I'd rather see hotel taxes from the Woodfield area go to local upkeep than the bottomless pit of the Chicago Democratic machine. Your thoughts on this or similar metropolitan concerns? Jingus 0 Report post Posted March 9, 2008 Tennessee has a sales tax near (or maybe by now, at) 10%. But they also have no state income tax, which lowers the net effect to just the IRS drunkenly molesting you instead of going for the straight assrape. There's been a massive ongoing battle in the state congress for years to get it reformed, but that's never gone anywhere. Also, even though TN shares borders with eight other states, conveniently none of their major cities are anywhere near ours, so there isn't a whole lot of "we need a new bigscreen TV, road trip!". Texas has a similarly high tax, but I really haven't been outside of the rich suburbs here, so I don't know how folks feel about that round these parts. Angry secessionist Republicans. Aren't the first two words redundant as long as you've got the last one?

MarvinisaLunatic 0 Report post Posted March 10, 2008 Maryland now has a 6% sales tax and about 5 minutes from here Delaware has 0. Not to mention most of the eastern shore counties having piggyback taxes on top of ithe 4.75% on income over $3,000 the state takes (Wicomico County, where I live is an additional 3%). Granted thats a local issue and representative of the crappy county government we have (which cant even run a landfill properly, having someone steal over $1 million dollars worth of equipment). The Eastern Shore of MD has tried to become the 51st state before without any success but if they keep taxing us to death and spending all of the money over on the other side of the bay and ignore us over here it might get brought up again. Id be all for Eastern Maryland and Western Maryland, though we'd more than likely be the poorest state in the country with our Chicken raising farmers being the biggest part of the local economy.. EricMM 0 Report post Posted March 10, 2008 Good Christ, stop you're bellyaching. You want to go be Delaware, go move there. The Eastern Shore area can be beautiful, but it is NOT Montgomery or PG. If you think they're spending all the money over here, it's because there's vastly more money to be had and made over here. You said it yourself. I can't believe you've got your head in the sand so deeply about global warming; the Eastern Shore area has enormous amounts of coastline that will be just destroyed by sealevel rise.
