TNA Impact Discussion 4/2/09

The following matches are scheduled for tonight's edition of TNA Impact:

- Team No Limit, Kiyoshi and Sheik Abdul Bashir vs. LAX, Consequences Creed and Jay Lethal

- Team 3D vs. Main Event Mafia Security

- Sting vs. Samoa Joe

- Taylor Wilde vs. Madision Rayne

- AJ Styles vs. Scott Steiner

Sounds like a good show on paper, but the 2 best matches, Joe/Sting and AJ/Steiner, will probably have bullshit finishes, judging by past precedent.

Who is the Paul Simon fan in the truck? TNA should have named this episode "Hearts and Bones". The first 30 minutes of Impact has been great. Solid promos to open the show and now the first match is the 8 man tag with all talented competitors. I am glad Homicide and Hernandez came out with their cases.

Just wondering but what exactly is Samoa Joe trying to be right now? Is he seriously supposed to be a top face, going around with a tribal knife kidnapping and torturing people? Is he a brooding anti hero? Honestly what is the viewer supposed to think of this guy?

Just starting to watch Impact now.....the opening promo segment.......quite a whirlwind of stuff there. I didnt quite get how Styles has "let down" TNA or Jarrett though, kind of makes him a bit of a tool to even suggest that out on a promo like that. Retarded scripted stuff there by probably Russo. It was just such a stupid reason why he wouldn't captain the team. Steiner and Jarrett's exchange on the mic was a little bizzare too, particularly Steiner talking about Jarrett's wife in such a way that it kind of made me uncomfortable, like she was Steiner's mistress or something. Really not sure how effective this segment was in terms of drawing the suspicion that Jarrett is turning heel. Plus Steiner just can't cut a serious promo properly (and rightfully so, he plays the crazy nonsense promos best) and Styles came off like a real loser on his own admission if you asked me. But maybe I'm nitpicking too much, just was some strange shit there.

Foley's promo stuff on this show is extremely off the wall, more a good thing than bad, but still awfully strange.

Wow, the wrestling, at least so far in this show, has been a total backdrop to the angles and promos more than ever. Then again I'm only to the really green knockouts match right now with Taylor and Madison Rain.

These Dr. Stevie segments are some strange stuff, why are they still acting like it needs to be a mystery that's Stevie Richards, especially after the deal with Abyss? And then to see them have bring back the Daffney gimmick in this context, freakin weird I tell ya. Both segments just made me laugh since during all of this shit, really cheesy elevator music is going on in the background.

Oh god, double shot of some really horribly awful segments.....that shower attack on Taylor (chuck full of Taylor whining so much I just wanted to hit the TV) and that Survivor chick Jenna (who needs to get acting tips from pornstars if you know what I mean) swooning over old man Nash.

Holy shit, just when I thought this Joe stuff couldn't get more WTF, they did it. I'm totally lost what they are trying for with this supposed push, it seems like a complete contradiction of such.

It fits with the promos he's given at Destination X and the following Impact, that the Frontline had failed and were being pushed around by the Mafia. Honestly, its exactly what we've all been saying for 6 months, isn't it? That the Frontline, Joe and AJ included, have looked bad and failed to hold their own against the Mafia. That's TNA's screwup so, I don't know. I prefer that they're acknowledging it. Its kind of weird and meta but it feels more organic. I mean, AJ doesn't look bad for saying he has failed. He looks bad because we agree. If the guy had looked awesome and been the star of the last 6 months then we'd just think him self deprecating or something. Instead he's introspective, and really that doesn't make him look worse. We were already thinking the things he said so him not pretending otherwise seems reasonable.

Of course he could have said nothing. He could just accept the captaincy and continue out without addressing the last 6 months or why the Mafia/Frontline war got as deep as its gotten. But I don't know, like I said I kind of appreciate that AJ seems to be acknowledging the last 6 months.

I didn't remotely get the "mistress" vibe from Steiner talking about Jarrett's wife, although certainly friends and I were joking about it while it was happening. That's Steiner's character so of course you basically expect him to say something like that. Instead it seemed like a sincere and serious Scott Steiner promo instead of a Poppa Pump one. Which I agree, was weird and probably a mistake. When it was over I actually had to ask what the point was and then Angle went and basically recut the promo to fill me in. I get the idea, it seemed fine. But Steiner's so entrenched in his character that stepping outside of it just feels weird, and he's not exactly an on point sort of promo guy.

I enjoyed the episode well enough but nothing to write home about. Rayne vs Taylor is weird. I think that's the 3rd time I've seen it and there's something about their chemistry. Its like they're half a step off from having a really good match or something. Everytime I watch them go at it I start to get a little excited for a good match but it just never gets out of that opening stage. I guess they seem poised for a PPV match so maybe if they go 1-on-1 they'll have the chance to either get the flow or show they don't have it. I was surprised to see that Evil Foreigner stable including No Limit (who I must have missed news of being more than NJPW loans) and their win, and I was pleased to see Daffney. A solid episode in (IMO) a run of solid episodes means a solid build for Lockdown. But not a lot more.

FYI, I didn't think the show as a whole was that bad, just a bit weird. I will openly admit that the Joe stuff is bothering me to no end right now, though. And I did think that Styles came off like a bit of a loser on this show, admitting he let down the company, and then when he took on Steiner, was made to look the same once again.
