Brief thoughts on Kobashi vs. Joe

I just saw this one. It was incredibly stiff. More so than a normal Kobashi or Joe match. They really set the stage early, doing things to let the audience know that this was indeed going to be a war between two guys who are viewed as the strongest wrestlers in their home promotions. The match built pretty well, as they kept it small at the start and didn't give anything away. Selling was top notch, particular the long-term selling, which really got over how grueling the match was. There wasn't any no-selling, which was one of the big reasons this was better than a typical NOAH main event. I originally thought that Joe's big offensive push came too early, until I realized the match had already gone ~18 minutes. I really thought it was about 8 minutes. The stretch run wasn't quite as epic as some matches, but it was alright. Another burst of offense from Joe before the finish would have been good, but I can't complain too much. This would have been my MOTY if not for the Differ Cup final, which was just off the charts. Barring that, this was still quite a bit better than any other match this year. ****1/2

HTQ agreed with the full monty (*****) for Joe/Kobashi, but I know your standards are a bit more strict.

That said, what were your star ratings for Joe/Punk I-III?

My standards are strict too. Check out when we talked about Kobashi versus Misawa from 2003 and Kobashi versus Akiyama from last year.

I = ***3/4

II = ****3/4

III I gave ***** to, but I didn't really put the screws to it. I wouldn't feel comfortable calling it a ***** match if it came up in a debate, and I really need to watch it again.

Kobashi vs. Joe didn't have the story/build nor the kind of "epic" feel that a ***** match needs in my opinion. I pretty much compared it to the Differ Cup finals, which I gave ****3/4 to, and I didn't think Kobashi vs. Joe was quite as good.

I'm not saying you aren't strict HTQ, hell, you say 6/3/94 is overrated. However as a whole, I feel MisawaGQ is a bit stricter from the few posts I've read from him.

I don't think I can call 6/94 overrated, because that's such a harsh term. It's a really great match. I just don't think of it as the all-time greatest match that almost everone else thinks it is.

Now, Razor versus Shawn II? That is overrated.
