6/29: Drafts, Election Erections

• I haven’t watched the NBA Draft in years, but this time around I decided to give it a shot. Wow was it great, but for all the wrong reasons. Not only did we have Screaming A. Smith and friends telling every draft pick why they suck right when these players were living their life's dreams, but we also had the New York Knicks draft a player who wasn’t even at this event, which was hosted at Madison Square Garden. I’m still trying to decide what I liked better: David Stern asking Dan Patrick when the ESPN crew will have something nice to say about one of the draftees, or the crowd’s reaction to the Knicks’ first-round selection. I don’t follow college basketball, so I have no idea which team “drafted best,” but it seems that the Trailblazers tried to give themselves a makeover with two top 10 draft selections. Also, how funny is it that a senior from Duke is going to be, according to the ESPN experts, the “leader” of the Atlanta Hawks?

• While I’m on the subject of college basketball players, this idea to double the number of teams playing in the March Madness Tournament is a really stupid idea. It’s bad enough many universities offer second-rate educations; they don’t need to have their second-rate basketball programs queering up everybody’s brackets. You want in the dance of 64 +1? Don’t lose during the regular season. This isn’t college football, where one win usually eliminates you from BcS consideration. Well, maybe if you’re one of those small conferences where only the conference tournament champion gets in. Then again, if you’re the top seed in the Colonial-West-Tech Conference and lose in your tournament’s championship game to a sub-.500 school, then what makes you think you’ll do any better against a Duke or Kansas?

I’m starting to tune out of the World Cup, but I found it funny that Switzerland, of all countries, had one of the top defenses in the tournament, not allowing a goal during its World Cup run. At least not during the regulation/stoppage time. Penalty kicks were another matter.

• There will be no KKK’s Top 103 Posters entry today, because I feel like talking about something gayer. Good job Czech (or whatever he’s calling himself nowadays) for showing us once again that a picture can be worth a thousand words (even if it's not available anymore). From an AIM conversation earlier today:

Fww76 (1:46:47 PM): Oh dear god

pardon miasma (1:47:01 PM): THAT'S WHAT YOU GET FOR OPENING THAT AWFUL THREAD

Fww76 (1:47:37 PM): I just want you to know I have NOTHING to do with LiM's "Election."

Fww76 (1:47:51 PM): that photo pretty much sums up what I'm feeling about it

pardon miasma (1:48:01 PM): yep!

Fww76 (1:48:11 PM): teh picture's the best thing about it

Fww76 (1:48:23 PM): sadly, that's what i was thinking when I read that

pardon miasma (1:48:33 PM): hah

Fww76 (1:52:01 PM): can you make a "Pit stop"? and post that pic in the Pit thread?

pardon miasma (1:52:18 PM): I'll do better

pardon miasma (1:53:13 PM): there, 1-upped

Fww76 (1:54:00 PM): ah fuck man i'm at work

Fww76 (1:54:08 PM): i saw about half-a-second of that

pardon miasma (1:54:12 PM): bahahah

Fww76 (1:54:16 PM): LOL

pardon miasma (1:54:24 PM): that's double-punishment for reading this awful thread at the Pit

Fww76 (1:54:31 PM): lol

Fww76 (1:55:16 PM): and you know what's sad?

pardon miasma (1:55:25 PM): Niskie is turned on?

Fww76 (1:55:31 PM): no, that's expected

Fww76 (1:55:59 PM): what's sad is that i think this is gay, and this is the same person who formed the CONSERVATIVE BRIGADE and has a TOP 103 POSTERS list going on in his BLOG.

Agreed about the NCAA tournament. No 16 seed has ever won a game, meaning the 61-64th best teams have never won a single game, let alone the entire tournament. And they want to let in 64 teams WORSE than those teams?

March Madness is great for the gambling industry, but it's a lousy way to crown a champion. They'd be better off CUTTING teams from the tournament and switching to a double elimination format.

It has to happen and this year it seemed like it would. I do think by 2010 (assuming the people in charge don't go with the stupid expansion) we will see that 16 over 1 in Men's tournament (it has happened in Woman's but since when does anyone care about that?)

It's a better way than how Division 1-A crowns a football "champion." Also, do you think a 16 seed will ever beat a 1? I do.

The problem with college football's championship is that it was designed to solve a specific problem when there are two qualified teams. It fails when there's just one dominant team, or more than two. Personally, I think the real problem is the obsession with the idea that there HAS to be a champion in sports. I say abolish the national championship and return to the old format. If you adopt a playoff system, you'll end up devaluing every bowl except for the championship, just like the BCS has done.

I think a 16 seed will eventually defeat a no. 1. But so far there have been (I think) 84 instances of a 1 vs. 16 matchup, and the 1 seed has won every single time. When the 16 seed wins, it'll be a 100:1 shot. And that's for one game. A 16 seed needs to win six games to win the whole tournament. For all intents, that's statistically impossible. But here's the real problem. You would more than double the number of games in the tournament. And a majority of those would be bigger mismatches than a 1 vs. 16. I can't even see it creating many exciting games.

I agree with what you said about college football regarding going back to the old format. If you want to keep your hippie bowls, that's all fine and dandy. If you're from a Pac-10 school, then your championship goal would be to win the Rose Bowl, regardliess of what your end-of-season "ranking" turns out to be. However, don't then get into a debate as to which team is the best for that year. You either determine a "national champion" via playoff system, or you just say "screw it" and play the bowl games. You can't have it both ways.

And you mean to tell me that a 1 v. 32 seed wouldn't have you skipping work early to watch with some friends at a local bar?
