I don't know how helpful my insight will be or if you would even value it but here are my impressions as to why it probably didn't win: -Your match was less explict than mine. -There was little characterization or emotion. -For the leg work being such a key to the story, there was no real focus on Toxxic's part to emphasize it. When Williams first takes over with the Mule Kick, I was left asking,"why is his leg hurt...those Dropkicks a few paragraphs ago?" -Not enough dynamics to make things intersting. There's a hint of power/speed but the focus is more on "injuries" which isn't enough on it's own to be a story. -No heel/face roles, face/face roles. How is this match suppose to help turn Toxxic face? A hand shake after kicking a guy's ass? Jumbo used to do that shit for heel heat, it's simply not enough on it's own to make someone loved. This is one of the reasons I decided to go with the chair spot. It helped to bring out Toxxic's morals and standards, something that's likeable about him. His decision not to use the chair when he could get away with it is a reason to like him. Sure, he didn't have to even go for the chair but that doesn't help clarify anything.

It is whatever I want it to be. Not to mention it's booked as a big finisher in the real world with Omori and Hogan using it. A move is only as valuable as you make it. And like I already said, you jumped straight into it from the top rope set up, making it more brutal than it normally is. "I just don't feel that a forearm smash from a man who already uses lots of forearm smashes can be THAT different to be a one-hit kill. " That type of thought process has no place in wrestling. You might as well start asking why the Rock's punches are more powerful when he spits in his hand? You won't find real world logic to justify it but in the entertainment business it's treated special because it's more attention grabbing than a regular punch. Than put a better description in your stats, no mention of a body scissors. Besides there's no fun in a unescapable submission. Look beyond the moves. There's paragraph after paragraph dedicated to your character. There wasn't enough words to use ALL your signature moves because I spent so many kissing your ass. If the only thing that seperates you from Billy Kidman is your moves, I think you should re-think your character. From what I've seen of Kidman is a one dimensional void of boredom, I at least gave you personality and motive. Lesson? edit-To be less vague. It's your character, if you don't think I nailed him, I really can't argue. However, my intent is fairly obvious and ignoring that fact to make bitter comments like the "Kidman" nonsense isn't getting us anywhere. I'm always happy to discuss wrestling, my writing, your writing, whatever but I don't like the direction your last post is taking this so I'm dropping out.

SWF STATS THREAD, Summer 2005 Edition
Coffin Surfer replied to Ace309's topic in Smarks Wrestling Federation
Smarks Board Name: Coffin Surfer Wrestlers Name: Danny Williams Nicknames: Height: 5'11" Weight: 275 lbs Hometown: Louisville, Kentucky Age: 22 Face/Heel: Face Stable: None Ring Escort: None Weapon(s): Quote: Taunt: Various flexes and an arm wind up for the Axe Bomber. Looks: Barrel chested with a bulky compact build. Williams isn’t that rip anymore but he’s a lot more buff, kind of like a very young humanoid Scott Steiner. Shoulder length dark brown with long bangs dripping down in front of his eyes. Huge Biceps with Popeye like forearms that enable him to knock people out. Wears: Black wrestling shorts, black kneepads, white wrist tape and boots. He also wears a black elbow pad on his right attacking arm Ring Entrance: Edguy's "Babylon" blasts out of the loud speakers. The familiar melody catches the ears of the fans, who begin to religiously chant... “Dan-e! Dan-e! Dan-e!” The chant grows and grows but Williams is nowhere in sight. The moment Williams steps through the curtains, the crowd explodes into cheers. Ravenous fans mass at the guardrail, hoping to get a closer look at the now mythical wrestler who’s strength and agility is now the stuff of legend. Just by confidently walking the down the aisle, Williams has attracted the attention of hundreds of cameras. Since climbing through the ropes is far to easy, Williams enters the ring by athletically vaulting over the top rope. Stats: Strength: 7-Can Powerbomb most anybody...including Janus on a goodnight. Speed: 4-More agile than fast. Vitality: 8-Tough well conditioned athlete. Charisma: 1-Actions speak louder than words. Style: Elbow Fu!-Williams is one of the best strikers in the history of the fed. Outside of that he’s an agile strong guy. Signature moves: Powerbomb Pin German Suplex Hold Press Slam Step Over Facelock Rolling Elbow Elbow Suicida Diving Elbow-top or second rope Common moves: Stalling Vertical Suplex Powerslam Sleeperhold Surfboard Stretch-elevated or normal Running Elbow Back Elbow Dropkick Mule Kick Elbow Smashes-several variations, forearm smash is most common. Elbow Drops-from various places basics: Body Slam, Armdrag....etc. Rare moves: Top Rope Powerbomb Finishers: AXE BOMBER!-Hulk Hogan’s world famous finisher and Danny Williams’ newest one. Simply put, a twisted Lariat that hits with the forearm instead of the inside of the arm. Williams dives with it, usually connecting with the face/forehead area. Lugar used this during his WWF stay as well but Danny's is obviously a lot stiffer. Notes: Williams is a gifted athlete with an uncanny combination of power and agility. If one needs a real life comparison, think of a smaller version of prime Steven Williams or Doug Furnas with a little less power and better looking dives. Wrestles more with his heart than his brain though that’s not to say he’s a goof who can’t use his wits when he needs to. It’s just Williams would rather out will an overwhelming opponent than break them down or trick them like a Bret Hart would. He’s a humble/heroic wrestler that won’t lower himself by attacking injuries and taking cheap shots. But if he’s repeatedly provoked, Williams won’t hesitate to give a punk heel a taste of his own medicine. Bio: The three time World Champion is back! -
I've been watching a lot of old NWA and what I love so much about those matches is the attempting and failure of numerous strategies. Toxxic trying the grapple, learning from his mistake and trying a new approach is much more compelling than Toxxic already having the answers. Besides, you don't have to be a strong guy to get an advantage from the grapple. There are speed and technical ways as well, armdrag anyone. Back/ribs, it's all the same area to some degree. You kept switching injuries so I just took the one you put over the most. I think you had taped ribs in a promo, so I figured it was more long term. I skimmed the Pretzler match and mistook it for having rib work as well. Williams screamed and recolied in pain, so he looked more vulnerable this time. I didn't put in repeated shots to the head because it was just a one shot deal as payback, because as written he got pissed over the ribs when he was trying to have a straight match. He's not intended to look guilty. It's just basic power stuff that happens to hurt the ribs. The Belly to Belly never hurt his ribs, it was just an impact throw. Yeah that should read Enzuigiri. I invisioned as a Step Over Stretch Plum, if Willaims is on his ass he can scoot to the ropes. Another slip. He's not weak from damage, I wrote it as he wore himself out from working the hold so hard. Remember Williams had just been in a finishing hold. I spent about a paragraph writing an explanation. If that's not enough, what is? As far as the Moonsaults, there was no real rib injury in the match. A running powreslam that Williams spent all day building momentum for, caused initial pain but wasn't intended to be a re-injury anymore than the single headbutt was going to reopen the wound on my head. Missile Dropkick is written. It's a real spot. Watch Misawa/Kobashi 1/97. Classic. Actually, Misawa used the leg first dive into a Lariat/Chokeslam..etc. transition regularly in the late 90s. Obviously, Williams had to side step the legs though. He doesn't work any body part. It's a DEATH spot. He jumped off the top rope and got hit so hard he went the other direction. No head work necessary for the Axe Bomber, especially if you jump into it. It's an AXE BOMBER! I'm sorry you didn't like the match as I took great pains to get your character right and cement his face turn. The whole match is literary a valentine to your character, note there's very little from Williams' viewpoint. This is Toxxic's story.

Both were formula character wrestlers unless the other worker was calling it(Funk, Race....etc.). The biggest difference being that Hogan was a more limited worker than Flair and obviously couldn't play pinball. Not to mention Flair isn't exactly innocent when it comes to repeat endings.
-
Loved the Hawke/Randy match. Even with the short length, Hawke manages to build a cool three act match with all the essentials. Great role playing with Hawke smartly using a vet vs. rookie dynamic as well as the typical heel/face roles. Good face in peril segment as well.

They have match dated 11/30/91 at the Gardens. Have yet to see it.

I'm not sure who started it but I know I was probably one of the first to start writing them in it's current overused over the top incarnation. It was a response to the "dull and boring" criticism my matches used to rightfully recieve in JL. I don't think I would say he get's stronger, it's just he starts to recover when he's given the opportunity. Mak couldn't keep the heat on him. Thanks for the comments.

The most perilous situation Austin is in prior to the finish is the ring post Figure Four and the "ankle break" set up. These are two very threatening alien spots that Bret's token Sharpshooter tease simply can't compete with. It's a premature climax the rest of the match can't top until the final minutes. Just look at the crowd, up until the finish that's the hottest moment of the match. After the Stunner and the chair shot transtion, Austin doesn't have anything left that can put Bret in real jeporady or get a major reaction. He tries with the two submission holds but the crowd never comes close to buying either as something Bret would submit to. The same goes for Bret. Even with Austin bleeding, his only interesting moment comes from the standard Sharpshooter tease. Nothing that can match the above mentioned spots. It looks like they just painted themselves into a corner. The work after the chair shot transition isn't terrible but it's nowhere near as interesting as the work that procedes it.
-
Bret/Austin SS 96 should be up there, it's just on my "desperately needs to be re-considered" list. I'm holding out on rewatching it until I can get my hands on Bret/Backlund and Bret/Nash so I can have a better view of the match in regards to the big picture if that makes sense. It could possibly fit in somewhere beneath Bret/Owen and above Bret/Smith. Bret/Austin Wrestlemania didn't hold up for me. They were building a ton of momentum than the match seems to peak with Austin's chair shot and steadily drop off until the bell spot at the end. This is the lead in to the finish and there's nothing really interesting going on. Even the blood isn't as exciting as it should be since it doesn't really lead to Austin being put in serious peril.

If you can't hear the "boooooring" during the half crab your either an denial or have bad sound on your t.v. It's not even a faint echo in the distance, there's several and the sensitive mics pick them up very well. As soon as they start, the ref talks to Foley and to his credit he quickly breaks the hold. If you can't admit to a clear as day fact that's almost as visual as it is audible than I can see where this is going and it has alot of curves and resembles a circle. BTW, the boring chant was perfecty justified. It would be like Hogan putting Andre in the bearhug at Wrestlemania 3. What the hell are the fans suppose to do, rally Andre out of the move? HBK isn't angry until Foley stops cooperating with his spots, not exactly a narrative in the true since. Well at least you noticed that. Which makes it even stupider for Foley to spend most of the match in peril. Not really. Magnum/Tully is a far more out of control of brawl and get this it still has heel/face dynamics and rallies the crowd behind the face. But to the match at hand. If the crowd was all over the place why HBK got cheered when he did face stuff and got "booed" when he did heel stuff like slap the ref? If the fans weren't really behind anyone why did Foley's shitty as it might be peril segment on HBK get far more heat than HBK's well done leg work? Afterall, there are several strong "H-B-K" chants whenever he's in peril. Could it be the crowd actually wanted to get behind HBK? Notice Foley is never get's any face heat despite being in peril for long periods of time. Yeah, the fans were cheering whoever they wanted. Foley played a pyscho in the match. After snapping Michaels turned into one as well. I can't believe I'm wasting my time actually arguing this. More of a weird stooge than a psycho. Hard to be took seriouisly as a dangerous psycho when your working "jumping out of the ring in panic" comedy spots. Micheals is an angry face, it's just it's not very effective since he's dominating Foley with ease for the most part and none of his spots come off as venegful unless he was fighting in the name of The Taker or something. Why all the hate. I haven't called you names? "Yes, I said said its the greatest match in North American history for ME." For a guy who's so contempt with getting people to accept your opinion you certaintly have a hard time accepting somebody elses. I can honestly see the appeal of Mindgames and I understand why so many like it. It's a fun brawl with a few very creative spots but it also lacks the depth, drama, and character I look for in classic matches. Glad I could make your day. This "Discussion" is going nowhere so yeah, I'll post a couple top tens in a second.
-
Are you? There's indeed boring chants during the half crab. On the tape version there crystal clear, perhaps they were edited out of the DVD. HBK isn't angry until Foley stops cooperating with his spots, not exactly a narrative in the true since. If that was the story the fans in attendance didn't get it either. That's why they "booed" HBK when he was being a bitch to the ref and outside of poping for the flashier spots, they fans weren't behind him when he dicked over the hand and leg in the same sense the fans were behind Dustin when he worked over Zybsko's hand at the Superbrawl tag. It was justified payback in that match while in Mindgames it's HBK flipping out because Foley saved himself from being hanged with it. Getting nastier than Foley? Foley doesn't do anything nasty in this match nor does he try to get in HBK's head. He just gets his ass handed to him for most of the match with HBK being a dick for no real reason that the crowd or me bought. It's not even a classic by the WWF standards. The sad thing it's still one of the best HBK and Foley matches I've ever seen.
-
The finish isn't even the most offensive thing about Mindgames. HBK doing some of the best heel work of his career when he's suppose to be the face is far more offensive. At least the run ins got a pop, unlike the "boring" chants HBK got when he stupidly put the guy the crowd was suppose to be against in heat holds like the half crab. The hand work mostly played to crickets for the same reason, it's a sympathy segment for the heel. It might work had they gave the crowd a reason to get behind HBK's dickish offense but he controls for the most of the match with ease and Foley never rudos it up enough. Good match but far from a classic or the company's best.

(Footage plays Mak’s meltdown last week.) .... Flexing his dry but still clearly defined muscles, Williams angrily snorts and puffs. This is the first time he’s seen the footage and it’s making his blood boil. Watching one’s self get beaten, disrespected and bloodied is a disturbing image that SWF wrestlers have to deal with on a regular basis. Something your average person can’t nor is willing to imagine. It’s an experience that can’t help but provoke strong emotions and for Danny Williams it’s becoming too much to stomach. ........ (The Franchise madly hammers a defenseless Williams with right hands) Williams flinches at the sight as a floodgate of bad memories rushes through his nerve endings. Others can only imagine the pain the move must have caused but Williams knows the reality far too well. It’s an experience he doesn’t want to live again but he has to watch. He has to see what Mak did with his own eyes. (Mak unveils his deadly new finisher, dropping Williams on his head with no concern for his health.) The clip ends, leaving behind a very unhappy viewer. Even with a large ridiculous looking bandage pasted across his forehead, Williams is still an intimidating clump of muscle that you wouldn’t want to piss off. Getting bad vibes from the former Champion, Ben Hardy keeps his distance. Perhaps it wasn’t a good idea to show him the clip. “...Um that was just last week, Danny Williams. Tell me, what is going through your head?” Fearful of moving another inch, Hardy nervously extends his arm to it’s full length, holding a shaky microphone beneath Williams’ mouth. Letting out a growl, Williams spits his answer in a controlled shout, “Right now, I’m thinking about how much things can change in just two years. I’m thinking about how it was just two years ago that I shook hands with Mak Francis. How he earned my respect through determination and resilience. But in just two weeks time he’s destroyed that respect and spit in the face of the fans.” Turning from Hardy, Williams continues as if he’s addressing someone in T.V. .land. “We were friends, Mak! Has your self doubt blinded you this badly? If you want to beat me, give it your best and wrestle like you did two years go. You don’t have to bring a chair or some new deadly move, all you need is that “never say die” attitude you overran me with two Junes ago. That’s why when we wrestle at the 13th hour, it will be in a straight singles match. I’m given you one last opportunity to be the better man.” Hardy interrupts, “ So your saying you’ll be facing the Franchise at the 13th hour?” “That’s right, Hardy!” barks Williams before going off another rant,”In front of the largest crowd in Vatican city history, in front of the new Pope and the towering saints of stone, I’m gonna show the Franchise what winning is really about. He can take all the short cuts in the wrestling world, invent deadly move upon deadly move, it doesn’t mean nothing if your facing somebody with an unbreakable will.” “You heard it fans!”proclaims Hardy,”At the 13th hour, it’s gonna be Danny Williams and the Franchise Mak Francis, one on one in a decisive battle for superiority."

Excellent. Somebody got the Hogan vibe. Wow, sharp memory. To be honest, I really didn't do any research and just wrote what sounded good.
-
Akira Taue and Toskiaki Kawada-Both could be sympathetic but other than that they were real bastards. The way they abused old frail Baba in a 94 tag is about as shocking as it gets. Were also reall assholes to each other in singles matches, even after their fued when they were partners. in Joshi: Ozaki-In tag matches she'd stomp the face's fingers from the apron when they tried to make it to the ropes.
-
If your interested in seeing more of Furnas/Kroffat, they had a series of good-all time classic matches in All Japan from 89-95.
-
Yeah, you got my character down right. I thought you had a pretty good match though the two big bumps(Belly to Belly and Exploder) at the finish could have had more value, as is they feel like they are just thrown in for a brief shock.
-
Eeek, my first match back and I'm already controversial again. To clarify a few things: The Axebomber is simply a much needed new finisher that fits in with the elbow/forearm offense. The Powerbomb is a good finisher but it lacks the "touch of death" feel that I was going for and the Rolling Elbow works better as a transition move. There was no intentions on my part to disrespect Spike. I didn't know he was building up his Lariat but at least I didn't use it in the match. I think Spike still looks like a contender, afterall he only lost because he underestimated a rusty Danny Williams.

You beat me to it but I very much agree. "Nevermind the Bollocks" obviously wasn't the first punk album nor is it the best. While they did borrow alot of elements from the likes of the Dead Boys, Dolls, Bowie, Faces..etc, they still put their own little spin on things and at the time they were fairly unique and stood out. When I think of unique bands that stand out from the pack, Sum 41 and Good Charlotte don't come to mind.

Wha? Regardless of where you stand on the Confederate Flag issue or even the causes of the Civil War debate this is simply not true. Slavery in the South was not abolished or really even threatened before the Civil War. It was already established that slavery was well protected under the Constitution. When he was elected, Abe himself promised not to touch Slavery where it all ready existed. However he did promise to stop it from spreading into the new territories if that's what you mean.

Glassjaw aren't emo by any definition and they certaintly are't progressive. You might as well start calling the Deftones emo. A line has to be drawn somewhere. Besides actual emo like Sunny Day Real Estate did have a progressive rock influence so it's not that far fetched. Diary is probably my favorite, their last album was decent though. Of course not. Fugazi were more post-punk than anything. They have little in common with what was emo and what is now mislabeled as emo.
