Most overrated films of all time

Well, 5_Moves knows that the Searchers is my favorite movie and I've told him to watch it like a million times.

I never thought I'd say this

It sounds like Smith's response to every question is "you're a fucking moron, go read the books." Thing is, NO ONE has ever read the Fletch books and they're used to the Fletch of the movies. It's an interesting predicament. You're trying to launch a film series from a book series, where two films already exist and are seen as the measuring stick. I can just see Fletch tanking big time and Smith winds up in the looney bin with drool coming out of his mouth while mumbling "why didn't you read the book? why didn't you read the book? why didn't you read the book?"

    Video game hall of fame

Pitfall sucks ass compared to Jungle Hunt. I love River Raid, but it would probably be far down the ballot. What about Combat? That was a great two player game for Atari. I used to have this game, but I can't remember what it was called for the 2600. You're a tank and you pivot around in a circle and shoot other tanks, biplanes and stuff as they pop up on your radar. Fun as hell and really good graphics for the period. Kangaroo and Popeye were neat for the time period, although they did follow the same basic framework as Donkey Kong.

    GZ Border Run

Well, since you do rimshots, Frost is going to be going on the comedy club circuit while in Japan. You can be his drummer. "Two guys walk into a bar...then I beat them within an inch of their lives with a pool cue. That's the joke, LAUGH!"

    ACTOR SPOTLIGHT

Let me second the Dragnet love. That movie is hysterical. Dabney Coleman is genius in it. I love the song over the end credits with Hanks and Aykroyd pseudo-rapping.

    What's Your Favorite Western?

That's pretty bold talk for a one-eyed fat man... MD2020, you have just shot up my list of favorite posters.

    ACTOR SPOTLIGHT

Tom Hanks is very interesting to see how he morphed from being a very light comedic actor to a more serious leading man, but there's still that charm and "friendly" quality to him. I think comparing him to Jimmy Stewart is very apropos. My favorite Hanks film is Nothing in Common, due to the chemistry he has with Jackie Gleason. It's a very overlooked and underrated little film. Probably Hanks best early performance and it kind of foreshadows the actor he would grow to be. My least favorite is probably Punchline. I found it to be painfully unfunny and dull. I would also say that Hanks is trying to hard. He's a funny guy, but he's not a stand up comedian.

    What's Your Favorite Western?

Man, this thread is old. Anyway, The Searchers is my favorite film and the end isn't a problem if you think about the film. The movie isn't so much about Ethan's rage, but his love his for his family and the importance of his family to a man who is an outcast from the rest of society. His rage for the Indians and his chasing of them stems directly from the slaughter on his family. Notice he doesn't hate all Indians, you can look at how he treats and likes Look to see that, just the ones who killed his family. The initial anger with Debbie is over how Ethan percieves her to have "gone to the enemy," but once he's confronted with her up close, his true emotions overcome him. You can also see how he resents Martin early in the film, but grows to accept him as he's the only family he has left. I've thought you could make a case for Martin being Ethan's son and the resentment he feels against him ties into his mother's murder at the hands of the same tribe that killed his family, Ethan says that Scar has the scalp of Martin's mother. However, I don't believe there's enough hard evidence in the film for that.

SWF Storm Card for August 15th.

I have no problem with Frost doing commentary. Just play it off as a promotional angle for Frost Brand Enterprises which are still major sponsors of the SWF. You could say that the promotional contract says that Frost, as the spokesman of the company, has to have so much airtime yearly and he needs to do commentary for a couple weeks to round that out.

    PROMO

That was very good Thugg. It sounded professional and played into the storylines that people had set up. From my end, I would have liked some more speculation as to what the contract trouble with Frost was, possibly tie that into King being power mad stopped Frost from getting some minor perks he wanted. Then again, I personally haven't figured out what the negotiation problems were, but I'm sure that will play into thing if I return.

    Two Hit Wonders?

Several Hendrix tracks were release after his death in the states, but none charted in the top 40. As an aside, I love Crosstown Traffic and I think it's one of his better and more overlooked tunes.

*Restrains bitchslap* Honestly, tell me why America is good. I've always found them to be third rate rip offs of Neil Young with poorly written songs and below average musicianship. Horse with No Name is very annoying and stupid. I can half stand Sister Golden Hair and Ventura highway, but the vocals still get him. So thin and whiny.

    Two Hit Wonders?

Nope, Touch of Gray is the Dead's only hit. As Watchtower is Hendrix's only one.

You can't mention BOC around here without someone making a cowbell referrence either. I think I'm going to make it a new drinking game. I agree, Think Lizzy is underrated and overlooked.

    What makes a good Album?

It's more than the songs that make a good album. That would mean that greatest hits albums are the best albums ever, because they have all the good songs. However, as The Kids in the Hall tell us, greatest hits albums are for housewives and little girls. Edwin and AoO are hitting it on the head pretty much. It has be a cohesive unit, where you can just hear the songs fitting together like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. This doesn't mean everything has to be a concept album, but you can tell that there is a focus and a theme there. One of my favorie albums is Aja by Steely Dan and that's one where one track just blends right into a next, but each with a distinctive sound and flavor to it.

I laugh at the this promo and its ineptitude. At least I had the Memphis Eel send out a memo.

    GZ Border Run

I'm waiting for Crow to come visit me. After he does all those drugs he'll need shiny badges, a big taco salad and a severed head to keep himself entertained. I'm looking at that big ass taco salad and my colon is saying no, but heart is saying yes.

    A Forgotten Classic

I love that Rockers vs. Orient Express match. It's damn near five stars in my book and probably the hottest opener I've ever seen for a WWF show. Piper vs. Bret is hardly forgotten, but I don't think I love it as much as most. It seemed disjointed to me in spots and Piper trying to play that he was going to turn heel didn't rope me in like it should have.

Let's go back, to the golden age of music...

AoO: I've never heard of him, but I agree with you, that is the greatest concept I've ever heard. It's going to last six centuries. That's insane and it really pushes the boundary of what is music and what's just random noise. I'll have to look John Cage up.
