The Grass Roots. I love Temptation Eyes, great song. They had a sound very comparable to the Guess Who. The Monkees are always written off as just a 'fake band.' But they have a lot of good songs and did write and play a lot of their own stuff from Headquarters on. Find the soundtrack to Head, listen to it and then try to write the Monkees off as being bubblegum crap. I really like Badfinger and feel they have some good songs. Marshall Tucker Band are a good country rock band in the Allman Brothers vain. I know there are some Blue Oyster Cult fans here on the boards, but I don't think they ever get the credit they deserve in the mainstream.

Top 50 Worst Music Artists of All Time
WrestlingDeacon replied to Use Your Illusion's topic in Music
Where's America? If they were playing a free concert in my front yard I'd set them on fire and unleash a horde of killer bees. ELP, Kansas and Mike and the Mechanics are the only bands I have a big problem with here. But, c'mon, there are a lot worse bands out there. Like any bad music list, these are just names that are popular to make fun of and I think has more to do with their name value and legacy than the music itself. I'm guessing they just mean Starship and they did suck, but that was only after Kantner got fed up and left. -
*orgasms on thread* To go back pre-rock. I love the big band swing sound and have expressed my love for crooners here in the past. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Bing Crosby, Mel Torme, Nat King Cole. I've also been watching reruns on the Tennessee Ernie Ford show on my local PBS station and have been digging him as a country crooner. For early rock, I worship Motown. Drifters, Coasters, Miracles, Temptations; you name them. Oddly, I've never cared much for the girl groups, but those were more part of the Philadelphia sound. Johnny Rivers has an awesome voice. I'm surprised Roy Orbison hasn't been mentioned, intriguing voice and a good songwriter. Dick Dale is a surf guitar god. I think the Riverias get overlooked today; California Sun was their big hit. Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran I think could have been bigger than they were. They did influence a lot of artists to come after them though. Here's an obscure name to look up: Link Wray. He basically invented the "power cord" and paved the way for metal. He still plays today too.

Del Shannon-7 more other than the two you named; So Long Baby, Hey! Little Girl, Little Town Flirt, Handy Man, Keep Searchin', Stranger in Town, Sea of Love ABC also had Be Near Me, How to be a Millionaire and When Smokey Sings Great call on the Foundations though.

I'm just flipping through my Billboard book and seeing what's catching my eye. Some two hit wonders I noticed: Andrew Gold-Lonely Boy (which was in Boogie Nights) and Thank You For Being a Friend (which was later used as the theme to the Golden Girls) A-Ha-Considered a one hit wonder for Take on Me, The Sun Always Shines on T.V. did crack the top 20 Greg Kihn Band-Our Love's in Jeopardy and The Breakup Song (Kihn also had a solo hit with Lucky) The Gap Band-Early in the Morning and You Dropped a Bomb on Me The Band-Up on Cripple Creek and Dont' Do It Gloria Gaynor-I Will Survive, Never Can Say Goodbye Presidents of the United States-Peaches and Lump

Spandau Ballet had True, Gold and Only When You Leave Just a Dream did not chart in the US Bonnie Tyler had three hits, those two and It's a Heartache Irene Cara had Fame, Flashdance, Breakdance, Out Here on My Own, Why Me? and Hold onto Your Dream from the cinematic masterpiece that is D.C. Cab

The book I have is Billboard's book of Top 40 hits, so its songs that were in the top 40 of the Hot 100 charts. So it doesn't take into count genre charts, like country, rap, r&b, etc. just if songs crossed over to hot 100 charts. Technically Pink Floyd did only have two hits in the US, Money and Another Brick in the Wall. Fine Young Cannibals had 3 hits in the US. She Drives Me Crazy, Don't Look Back and Good Thing.
-
D'Arby had three hits, Wishing Well, Sign Your Name and Dance Little Sister. The only song listed for Harvey Danger is Flagpole Sitta. Again, the book only goes up to 2000, though.

Most of ME's are correct. However, it appears that Kurtis Blow had no hits in the overall top 40 and Mint Condition had several other minor hits including U Send Me Swingin', You Don't Have to Hurt No More and If You Love Me. Peaches and Herb had 6 other moderate hits with Let's Fall in Love, Close Your Eyes, For Your Love Love is Strange, Two Little Kids and I Pledge My Love. Sheila E. had a very minor hit with the Bells of St. Mark. I will flip through my top 40 book later and see what else I can find.

I'm home from work and I have my top 40 book out, so let's double check some things. Spin Doctors-Edwin is correct, Jimmy Olsen's Blues did not chart in the top 40 Crash Test Dummies-One hit wonder, only Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm charted. Scatman John-Can't find anything on him, but my book only goes up to 2000. What hits did he have, when and how far up the charts did they get. Men at Work-Nope. They have five hits, four in the top ten. Besides the two named, they had Overkill, It's Our Mistake and Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive Milli Vanilli-Nope. They have five top ten hits. Besides the two mentioned, there was Baby, Don't Forget My Number, Girl I'm Gonna Miss You, All or Nothing Vanilla Ice-correct The Romantics-correct. Although my book says What I Like About You did not chart, although One in a Million did. Corey Hart-Nope. Two big hits, seven minor one. Those being It Ain't Enough, Boy in the Box, Everything in My Heart, I am by Your Side, Can't Help Falling in Love, In Your Soul, A Little Love Zach was correct on All-4-One, they don't count. Peter Andre-No hits in the states Snow-Correct. Snap-Also had Ooops Up, although it barely cracked the top 40, 2 week at 35. C+C Music Factory-Here We Go was top ten, Do You Wanna Get Funky spent 2 weeks at number 40 Marshall Tucker Band-2 hits but I was wrong on Can't You See, Fire on the Mountain charted. Manfred Mann-I was wrong on them too. They had Do-Wah-Diddy-Diddy, Pretty Flamingo and Sha-La-La, then became Manfred Mann's Earth Band and had Spirit in the Night and Runner along with the two I mentioned. Blue Oyster Cult-I was right on them and Golden Earring.

You obviously haven't seen many Flair matches pre his WWF run, as he was pretty cut for a bulk of his run in the NWA. Particulary check out Starrcade '88, which I believe is as buff as I've ever seen him. And if you look around from the time period where Flair was a major champion and championship threat there were guys in a lot worse shape and looks, Harley Race and Dusty Rhodes, who were champions.
-
Oddly, IDRM, I just thought of Tone Loc and was coming to add him. I'm going to check on the Spin Doctors when I get home, but I'm pretty sure they don't count. But the Spin Doctors made me think of Crash Test Dummies and I believe Afternoons and Coffeespoons charted as did Mmmm, Mmmm, Mmmm, Mmmm. I'll check on them when I get home too. YnA brings up a good point. We're talking hits here, just not singles, something that place in the top 40.

Thank you for the great comments Edwin. I'm glad you liked it so much. I'm glad everything I was trying do and threw in is getting over with people. In my thinking, I brought in the other two presents Frost sent Flesher, so I had to bring in the steak sauce to round it out. It also plays into Tom taking away the psychological advantage or whatever away from Frost and turning it into his own gain. The swipe across the stomach might have been a bit too far out there, but I felt I needed a dire injury to hit Tom like the beating in the face with the table leg did to Frost. I had another spot there that I took out, because I thought it way too contrived and jokey. That being, I was going to have both men crawl under the ring with Tom coming out first with a small pane of glass in his hand waiting for Frost. However, Frost comes out of the side of the ring with a pane of glass, sneaks up on Flesher, but he turns at the last instant and they deck each other with the glass for a double out spot, with Flesher finally recieving a major cut off of that. I also had a Ganso bomb over the ropes to a sawhorse on the floor planned, but took that out, because that's just way too fucking sick. The thing I was trying to do with Riley's commentary as the match progressed was a Bobby Heenan on Flair in the Rumble type thing, where he's spazzing out over every little thing ending it for his man. I think I could have and should have done more with that. My writing style has always been commentary heavy, that's just me. I use the commentary to get the emotion and excitement of what the fan is seeing over. I felt a garbagey brawl just worked best here with the various elements and storylines. I'm glad that worked for you, although in retrospect I could have had some more wrestling scattered throughout. I was trying to write my best match ever and as far as realizing outside and internal storylines, I think I've done that.

The Infinity Gauntlet / War / whatever you

Thanos wiped out half of the people in the universe, including some heroes and supporting characters. When Warlock took the glove off of him, he brough the people back. -
I'm happy that someone finally commented on my leaving opus. I agree with the commentary, but that's how Riley is, or at least how I invision him. Even in the most dire of situations, he's still trying to be funny and I thought with a match as heavy as I was making it to be some levity needed to be involved. The TFDB was derived at a time I was making Frost a lighter character and with the way the move had been built up, I knew it had to be the finish. Although, I guess the use of the name at that point could be distracting. Honestly, when I started writing the match I had really cut back on Riley, but it just didn't seem right while I was writing. That whole 'hammer vs. knife' metaphor is great and I didn't even think about the dynamic of what objects and tactics I was having the men use consciously. That's just naturally how the match laid out for me. I will read the show and post comments, might not get to it until this weekend though. Now that I am retired, I do hope to start making indepth comments on the shows again, especially in the JL. After I read Mark's promos I will fully comment on the situation, but at this time I must say that I'm in the Ejiro camp. Don't we bitch at the WWE for letting non-wrestlers wrestle and bringing up history that the general fan doesn't know or remember? If it's just them coming out of retirment for one match, I don't think it's going to fly. What's the point? If there's going to be far reaching effects on the active fed as a whole, say Stevens comes out of retirement, or becomes commissioner or is replaced permantly as the play by play man, then you have new storylines and elements opened to the rest of the fed to explore and play off of. I also agree with Ejiro in that you should make it more about the now rather than the then. Do something to get those unfamiliar with the two characters out of thier current roles into the feud and confrontations. Now, to Thugg. I think most people in chat who are constantly praising King and Edwin don't have a clue what they're talking about. It's just trendy for them to do. You can also say that Edwin and King are a little more active in the fed today than you or Mark, even though he is a member of CC. Instead of grousing about how great you used to be and how no one respects you; trying getting into the fed of today. Start reading shows and commenting, start pointing people to old matches of yours when it seems appropriate. "I see what you were trying to do with the match, it kind of reminds me of this match I wrote, here it is, check it out, it might help you." I know you do the rankings and run upkeep on the website, and people should be thankful and praising you for that at the least right now. When you do the rankings, don't you usually get a decent response to that? That's because you're doing something that effects the fed of today. I'm very sorry that I never got a chance to wrestle you Thugg, as I was digging a lot of what you were doing in your last run and was impressed and surprised by how good you really were. However, it's not like you can just pop in a tape and watch old Thugg matches. If you want n00bs to know who you are, you have to show them.

Dean Martin Marvin Gaye Nat King Cole Michael McDonald Mickey Dolenz Johnny Cash Wilson Pickett Smokey Robinson Elvis Presley Roy Orbison Frank Sinatra You know, guys who can sing. And Tom Waits, even though he can't sing, but damn does that screeching howl enthrall me.

I discovered that I would be out of town Thursday night and asked Thoth if he could change markers. Rest assured I will be back marking and sending comments to writers next show.

The Infinity Gauntlet / War / whatever you
WrestlingDeacon replied to Lil' Bitch's topic in Literature
I have it at home, I'll need to double check when I get in tonight if no one else has answered. I do remember some ploy where the Silver Surfer was going to sweep in and take it while Thanos was distracted, but I don't believe that worked. I know that Warlock eventually wound up with the glove and was forced to distibute the gems to the Infinity Watch by the Eternals......or maybe it was the Celestials. Big ass super powerful dudes. Edit: I see Starvenger answered. I believe that Thanos wanted to be beat, because Death still didn't love him and turned her back on him. -
I like how Jesse and Gorilla push that if Savage vs. One Man Gang ends in a draw or double dq that Dibiase would automatically become champ and there would be no main event. In this day and age they probably would have done that just to swerve the fans then booked an 'impromptue' Dibiase vs. Hogan match or something.

and they both started in Memphis working for JERRY JARRETT.

I would say no, since you can't no show a promo. It's not like it HAS to be there in most circumstances. Usually, I'll write a promo or the other guy will, we'll let the other one look at it, change anything if need be, then send it in.

Singles Match Xcalibur vs. Quiz -I think this actually stacks up to be an interesting and intriguing match up. I believe Xcalibur might have been out of the loop a little too long to compete just yet and MVS is energized with the new character and title win. WINNER: QUIZ Hardcore Match Nathan Kibagami v. Dante Crane -So was it ever decided who's writing as Dante Crane? I say a double no-show, even though no one should be that stupid after what occurred on the ppv. I guess, I'll try to be positive and go for the devil I know. WINNER: KIBAGAMI Singles Match CIA vs. "The Sinner" John Duran -Duran is a promising bumpee and I think CIA is a good test for him to go against. I've always like CIA, but he really hasn't set the world on fire since his return. Still, I'm always of the mind that it takes a bumpee some time to figure out how to write in the WF and get some momentum going WINNER: CIA No DQ Mask vs. Mask Match Beezel vs. Sean Atlas -I don't think anyone cares anymore and it's sad that their heat has been killed this way. I originally picked Beezel, but I think he might just want to unmask now and move on to something else after this whole angle appears deader than the hooker in my trunk. I don't want to sound mean, but I just have a bad taste in my mouth about this match now. WINNER: ATLAS Singles Match Show vs. Dace Night -I think a stip would have been neat for these two characters. Although I believe a classic match will come out of this and this is my pick for match of the night. I think Night has the move and holds knowledge to craft a match with good wrestling and high spots. WINNER: DACE NIGHT Singles Match "The Sacred One" Andrew Blackwell vs. "Judge Mental" William Hearford -This is another match up I like and I like both men here. Judge usually bounces back from a hard loss and I get the sense that winning has nothing to do with the storyline Blackwell is running. I also like a Judge vs. Mak match for the ICTV belt next week. WINNER: JUDGE Main Event Singles Match for the ICTV Title "The Franchise" Mak Francis vs. "The King of Nightmares" Michael Craven -Honestly, I don't want Craven anywhere near this or the world belt. Seeing what he's done with other belts, he just trades them back and forth and doesn't do jack to elevate himself, his opponent or his belt. Mak is a proud guy and I like what he and Danny did with the US and I hope he can find a worthy opponent to do something similar in bringing back glory to the ICTV. WINNER: MAK

Weekend boxoffice report Aug 8-10
WrestlingDeacon replied to Youth N Asia's topic in Television & Film
I also think this coming week will be a low one. The top film probably won't gross over 15 mil. It's the middle of August, always a down time, and the films opening this weekend are all niche market stuff. -
Weekend boxoffice report Aug 8-10
WrestlingDeacon replied to Youth N Asia's topic in Television & Film
Yeah, but how large of audience is that really? Freddy and Jason could take number one due to them being the only big new release coming out. I haven't heard a word on Uptown Girls until this week. It will split the family audience with Freaky Friday, and those who saw FF last week might not go to the theaters two weeks in a row. You know, Open Range is coming out this weekend too. Wouldn't that just shock the shit out of people if it was number one, but think about it. Just like there are few family films anymore, there are few films that appeal to an older audience.
