    Campaign 2008

Right. He certainly fit the Commander in Chief bill better than anyone else save Washington & Grant. But on all other fronts he was a ways behind Obama is already. Grant was another example of limited experience in politics making it to the top, but his story isn't so good for we Obama fans.

Comments which don't warrant a thread.

Cold War Kids, The Hold Steady, Fountains of Wayne, John Butler Trio, and Uncle Earl have leaked confirmations for this summer's Bonnaroo fest. The biggest rumors have it that Pearl Jam, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, The Roots, Modest Mouse, TV/Radio, and ISIS may be there as well.

    The New Congress

Sounds like the Dems wanted to make a bit of a bigger wave with their State/Union rebuttal than they did waddling Durbin out last week. Jim Webb gets the ball. Should be fun.

Didn't we already go over this months ago? Obama has far more experience in politics than Chet Arthur, Ike Eisenhower, and others. Lincoln went from a losing Senate campain to the Presidency. Etc. Do you want the black folk behind your wall too Invader?

    Boxing Thread

The WBO has ordered a purse bid for the WBO welterweight title bout between champion Antonio Margarito and mandatory challenger Paul Williams to take place January 23 at the WBO Headquarters in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Championship Committee has approved a minimum bid of $200,000. Margarito, however, is penciled in to face Miguel Cotto on a big pay-per-view event in June and is widely expected to relinquish the belt rather than to face Williams. -fightnews I'm sure Marge will try saying it was Paul Williams that ducked him.

I don't think one can have their headphones on outside too much. All music can do is add to the surroundings and vice versa while opening up new or forgotten thoughts. What, really, is their to miss? In the large city the buzz and drone is drowned out by song, in the small town the boredom can be eclipsed. If a familiar voice calls 'hello' it will be heard unless one has said headphones on at dangerous levels. I do alot of hiking, rock climbing, and such and always listen to music...so as not to miss anything crazy like several whitetail deer jumping out of a bush and coming within fet of trampling me I just keep the music quiet. For me, certain songs and bands become synonymous with the outdoors & others fit better eminating from a car dash or on a Greyhound ride. Nick Drake is perfect for nighttime busrides no matter what the weather...while walking outside his music seems to fit winter the best. I equate Pavement to sunny weather. Winter or summer doesn't matter as long as the sun has shown up that day.

The one thing that could hurt an Obama candidacy in the South far more than race ever will...Mike Huckabee. I honestly don't see how Hilary would do any better than Obama in the South (or anywhere else, really). Edwards could do well running with his populism ideas & helping the unfortunate. The Biden and Dodd types wont have magical success in the South but, of course, neither one is going anywhere anyway. Iraq and populism will be essential in the South as well as a few other key regions. Obama and Edwards (and possibly Bill Richardson) will do best with these out of the Democrats...Huckabee and Thompson (and possibly Giuliani) on the right.

    Campaign 2008

Yes. Bush definitly has the potential to be the best campaigner for the Dems in '08. His current stance of admitting failures in Iraq are making the others in his Party look terrible for following him. And, with the Dems pushing all of these popular social ideas right now, the President is in the tough position where signing them gives the Dems all the glory & if he vetoes them he makes himself and his Party appear to be heartless/eve more out of touch. It's practically become a running joke about how the young & the poor just dont vote. 2006 put a huge dent in that. If Bush continues to flounder, and the New Congress can work and pass some of these things like minimum wage and college tuitions it will look very promising for youth and poor demographics showing up even bigger in '08.

This same stuff was said about JFK & Catholicism in 1960. It is possible for Obama to get votes while not being white. One good speech can change alot of things...and now, more than ever, people dont want to be seen as racist. Obviously there are still some people living with that pre-adolescent mindset but it is a smaller number than ever in this country. I would also venture to guess that, along the lines of what Kotz said, the Southern people both black & white living in poverty might be more apt to vote for Obama out of feelings that he might be the one to really help them. And there are plenty of people living in poverty in America that, if motivated to help themselves at the polls, could swing an election. Obama has the potential to carry the Bobby Kennedy vibe that scared the Establishment so much in '68. He can carry all the trusty blue states for a solid base, could have more success in the Midwest/Industrial Belt than a Kerry type, and could do ALOT better than expected in supposed Republican/white strongholds.
