Yes, the debates (and the Cooper Union address among other things) were well publicized at the time...but the ability to acquire such information was far more dificult due to a lack of options (newspapers, pamphlets, word of mouth, books) and to get anything in a timely fashion was next to impossible. One had to go out of their way to gain such knowledge in the 1800s. Fortunately for the particpants of that era, Americans involved themselves in the politcal process as we do the NFL today. Today, in the case of Barack Obama, there are his speeches which are carried live (and then replayed) on C-SPANs, televised interviews & speeches ready to be seen & heard on tv, radio, & online, Wikipedia for quick links and info, his own website and others' dedicated to him, and he has a book out right now that deals exclusively with his political stances. How people might struggle to find out how he thinks and feels is due to laziness and nothing else.

Yeah, lots of people post every minute on the minute, harass anyone that ever thinks differently, likes to watch cars speed around an oval, and cheers for (a certain football team that I shouldnt say because I'm giving it away).

I don't really see how (name of PBP I'm not allowed to mention) has changed much, if at all, from when he was (the original name of the poster I'm not allowed to mention).

They should re-induct Andre. Wasn't he the first inductee, more than ten years ago, without much of a ceremony? Savage & Steamboat would be fitting but one of those probably won't happen.

Might as well stop bannings altogether if people are allowed back this easilly/obviously.

I put Cheney on the same level as LBJ, the bottom of America's political barrell. But he clearly dominated on that occasion. I think that a look at Cheney's warhawk views can be extrapolated from his gay-marriage views. Having a lesbian daughter, he is better able to understand a side of that story that he otherwise would not, and takes a states-rights stance on the issue. Had he had other things to do in the 1960s besides eluding the draft repeatedly, his views on war now would probably also be far different.

In the 1850s one probably had to go out of their way, over a period of time, to find out about the goings-on at those fabled debates. There was no Nexus search, 24 hr television news, C-SPANs, internet etc...it should go without saying that knowing a candidate's stances is FAR easier now than it was then. But apparently it does need repeating. Just because those Douglas-Lincoln debates have become legendary over the years due to numerous books and the incredible legacy of Lincoln, the only way to find out about them at the time was by either being in Illinois, reading newspaper accounts (that could take weeks to be 'fresh news'), or the pamphlets that were published over the months/years following. John Edwards was Cheney's chewtoy that night. Very brutal television.

"I didnt ASK you THAT! I ASKED you how your son is DOING! Now watch me snort this bump."
-
Yeah, listen to the PBP everybody.

Someone tried arguing with me that Johnny Cougar & Bruce Springsteen sound exactly the same. I didn't bother to hold up my end of the debate.

When did Colin Powell join the Terrorcrats?

"Nice black fellow" is all Barack Obama has going for him...you said that in the face of all the information readily available about him, as it is apparently too dificult for some people (yourself included) to actually read about or watch speeches by a potential candidate. The election was weeks ago Czech, the worlds still spinning proper. Are your walls spinning too?

Since when do the Raiders put actual thought into signing people?
-
And the guy that got knocked down, twice, tests positive for speed.

I was happy to know I can still enjoy the reruns the first few times I watched after all this shit.
-
Can we all agree that the Raiders would be the team to take Vick if he does get dropped by the Falcons?

November 2004 is even more boggling, though the John Kerry didn't provide much of an alternative.

What are everybody's picks for all the fights Saturday night? I'm taking Winky by decision (but rooting for Ike), Lacy by ko within 8, Cotto by late stoppage over Quintana (FOTN probably), and Clottey in the upset (I'm really tired of the Margarito hype...nobody is ducking him, and the one time he stepped up and fought someone with a pulse/experience he got beat by Forbes).

ESPN aired the first in a string of three afternoons of Muhammed Ali fights today. Much better than the usual poker and retired benchwarmers acting like football experts.

If it's not possible to have more than one 'one night stand', what have I been doing for the last few years?
-
Well, the Mark David Group is a very good blues band, but unfortunately nobody ever has or will hear of them.
-
Well, what other bands does it have to compete with from the Madison area? Some shitty jambands? It could have been Suspended Zen, but we disintegrated after recording one EP. Garbage rules by default. Sadly.
-
Madison's best.

We prefer to be called 'Hipster Deficient'.
