I started with Still Life W/ Woodpecker...and that led me to read them all. I would suggest starting with either that, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, or Another Roadside Attraction. Fierce Invalids was awesome, Villa Incognito not as much.

The idea here is to pick the worst candidates put forwards by one of the 2 parties. I didn't use failed Presidents like LBJ, Carter, Nixon, and W Bush as they were elected. I didnt select guys like Mondale or Dole since they were basically just sacrificial lambs...the same scenario of slaughter (how's that for alliteration Czech?) could apply to Goldwater & McGovern but I like both of them as they were/are genuine and passionate men who truly deserved to be President, it was no fault of their own that the American public believed Daisy-ads and 'liberal' as a curse word. Obviously, you are all free to discuss/nominate/choose anyone as the worst out of your opinion but this was how I made my list. Yes, Im serious about the Hube. That Civil Rights stuff was all wonderful & nice, but it was well over a decade old by the time HHH ran fis first awful campaign. In 1960, Humphrey couldnt cross his state border to hold back Kennedy stumping around Wisconsin and racking up delegates. His West Virginia debacle was miserable at best. He was, as par for the course in Hube campaigns, caught redhanded with such cheesey tactics as claiming to be a member of whatever religion was practiced by whomever's hand he was shaking at the moment. You cant say he was unfortunate to to have been LBJs President as he could have easily told him 'no' and remained in the Senate until 1968 or 1972...that was Humphrey's greatest problem. He never got out of Johnson's massive shadow because he had always been a spineless sort on the national stage (especially in the 60s). 1968 was one of the biggest elections in our history and the party machinery went with Humphrey, the one man Nixon felt sure he could beat. It was one of the worst example's of a party picking the old reliable hand when the stakes were too high (2004 was another example of this). He ran a pitiful campaign, defending the Vietnam policy and refusing to ruffle LBJ's feathers until it was too late. In the closing days of the campaign Hube finally started to move away from the Johnson/Vietnam policy and nearly caught Nixon. Had Hube been his own man, he would have been President of the United States. His '72 & '76 efforts did nothing to help his image as a loser on the national political stage.

Bob Dylan came to Madison on Halloween night. I attended the show in full Hunter S Thompson costume. On the way to the Kohl Center things nearly took a turn for the tragic when a girl on a bike ignored the traffic & crosswalk lights and was nearly smooshed by an elderly blue station wagon. At the parking ramp the lady taking our money in exchange for the ticket told us that some people were parking on the side of the rode, though she didnt know if that was all legal or not. After a terrible evening in Chicago several years ago I had no problem with being seperated from $5 in exchange for a safe spot in the ramp. Inside the Kohl doors I saw a waifish female police officer (with a haircut somewhere between Sinead O Connor & Bob Haldeman) staring at my full cigarette holder. Walking past I allowed my head to twist backwards to maintain the stare. Stumbling back I explained that it was merely tobacco and, after she took a good smell, I was allowed to wander off towards the seats. The Foo Fighters opened things up with an acoustic set that lasted just under an hour. Dave Grohl seemed to be having a genuinely good time on stage and had his usual rapport with the audience. Highlights were Marigold (a song Grohl wrote during his Nirvana days), Everlong, and some comedy...not so good moments were the hokey 'My Hero' and the weak 'Skin & Bones'. Heres the setlist as I recall: Times Like These Big Me Marigold My Hero Skin & Bones Cold Day in the Sun (With drummer Tyler Hawkins playing the role of Don Henley) Next Year See You (w/band intros & solos including the triangle) Everlong After waiting about 30 minutes it was time for the icon himself, Bobby Z. Dylan is always transforming himslef...grew up in Northen Minnesota, became hipster king of NYC, found Jesus, and glued himself to the road. These days he dresses like an old saloon gambler cowboy and tonight he had on a spiffy black western suit. Dylan keeps to the keyboards now but his show still brings the fun. This was a better set tha I saw from him the first time, at Bonnaroo '04. He played a few songs off the new record as well as classics. Some of the oldies were drastically reworked, Positively 4th Street was recognizable only by its lyrics. Dylan doesnt do the whole talk-to-the audience thing but there was still plenty of energy from the musicians on stage. Rhytym guitaris Stu Kimball does a dance that looks something like a hybrid of Bullet Bob Armstrong and Glenn Quagmire. At times old Bob can get a bit boring & garbled but it only slightly intereferes with the awesome. The best songs to me were Workingman's Blues #2 (best song on the new album), Highway 61 revisted, and one of my fave songs ever, Tangled Up In Blue.

Kerry definitly fucked his 'joke' up, but it is nice to see him finally acting like a passionate human being...something he only did at a few rallies in '04. This is not nearly as disgusting as a Commander-in-Chief dressing up like a GI Joe doll to give a John Wayne speech underneath a banner saying 'Mission Accomplished' while Americans would fight and die for years to come. Kerry's mindless joke attempt pales in comparison so get over it GOP & ball-less Dems.

The coolest thing Madison did was block off the entrance of the downtown Walgreens so people had to pay $5 to go shopping. OMG I wish people coulda had there heads busted by them superduper cops! -kkk, etc
