Live8 did have a big impact on the G-8 conference...and Bono had more to do with that than anybody. Some countries debts were eliminated and alot of money was donated by wealthy nations. Bono has been to Africa to assist people often and has had several meetings with President Bush and other world leaders. He is also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his poverty/AIDS work. I really doubt that Time and the Nobel folks are just really big U2 marks... That said, I wouldnt have argued if Bush Sr/Clinton or Nature had gotten the award...and I dont see much arguing against who did get it either.

Its frustrating when people refuse to branch out. People can like whatever music they want, but to adamently deny anything different is a pretty miserable outlook. Its also pretty hypocritical to the old hippie attitude. People who need to label every band as emo, jam, etc are just annoying.

There are some (alot) varsity club hippies that will ONLY listen to bands that have been labeled 'jam'. They refuse to try anything beyond Phish or other groups/artists that are similar. I have no problem with Phish, I dont really like them outside of a couple songs...but their fanbase (like DMB's, etc) is just sadly one dimensional. My recently deceased band could even be lableled 'jam' for a song or two and a penchant for improvisation, freestyling, and varied setlists. But every song is diferent, just like with bands under the 'jam' umbrella. Every bands inspirations, goals, etc are different and when matched by talent/passion it makes something unique. Terms like 'emo' or 'jam' attempt to lump too many bands into one category until they dont fit...Jeff Buckley sang with a high voice and was very EMOtional, but is he 'emo'? The Grateful Dead had origins in jug music, bluegrass, rock, etc and didnt record any songs that sounded like another in their catalogue...yet they noodle away and play for hippies, so theyre a 'jam band'. And, of course, Coheed&Cambria has a high voiced singer and songs that deal with EMOtional topics so they have to be 'emo'.

Along with 'emo', 'jam band' is my least favorite label for a band...I prefer using the label 'a band' and then doing my best to describe the kind of music that a band/artist plays. When that fails, and I doens't no no better...I ask myself, What Would violentJ Do?
