    The 2008 MLB Offseason Thread

For some reason I couldn't find the details with a quick search, does anyone have the numbers on the extension Joe Nathan signed with the Twins last year for comparison to the K-Rod deal?

Jay Leno to remain with NBC

My initial reaction is that they may have screwed things up big time here. Keeping Jay away from the other networks is probably a good move, but I think it makes his fan base less likely to watch Conan, and also puts him up against actual competition on the other 3 networks. It'll be interesting to see how this works out. Any reports on how much they're paying him?

I'm liking this bounce-back year for Antonio Bryant after being completely out of the league last year. Watching him at Pitt I had only slightly lower expectations for his NFL career than I did for Larry Fitzgerald's.

The Tigers decided to fill their shortstop spot with Adam Everett. I think the deal's only 1 year $1 million. Hopefully his defense hasn't fallen off after playing about 2/3 of a season spread out over 2 years because he's never been able to hit anything.

What is the rule on Ed Reed's slide on the last interception? Not that it really mattered, but is a play ruled dead on a non-QB slide?

I really liked this article about the reaction out of the Cowboys locker room, only for the last line really:

"Gametime decision" Marion Barber didn't even make the trip to Pittsburgh. I guess the decision was made a little before gametime. Tashard Choice is starting at running back.

I'm pretty impressed by UConn's running back Donald Brown, mainly because he's the only player on that entire offense. Their QB is 4-21 for 22 yards and 2 INTs. There isn't even a threat that they'll throw the ball, and he still has 140 yards in only the 3rd quarter

Buster Olney has a report that the Mets, rather than having a primary target, have decided to sign one closer by offering deals to K-Rod (3 yrs, $36 million), Brian Fuentes (3 yrs, $30 million), and Kerry Wood(2 yrs, $16-18 million) and signing whoever accepts theirs first. I think I might like this approach.

I liked that Avery was forced to attend anger management classes because of it, as if it was anger that caused him to say something. I don't know that he has problems with anger, he's just kind of a douche.

Just looking at some stats for no real reason and I noticed this: Tony Romo: 8 sacks, 7 fumbles It's pretty impressive how rarely he gets sacked, but considering that he has maybe 2 legitimate rushes all season I'm left wondering; does he fumble every time he gets hit this year?

Jack Wilson-Dodgers talks are supposed to be back on and the Tigers are looking at Adam Everett as a plan B. A proposed Pirates-Dodgers deal would be Jack Wilson and some of that contract for Chin-Lung Hu and Delwyn Young with the Pirates still looking for another piece in the deal.

Same link now says the Tigers called to say the deal didn't happen. They seem to think it's still going through though. Hmm... Out of Pittsburgh: This is what is known: The Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers continued talks regarding Wilson throughout the week, but Detroit re-emerged last night with a fresh offer, one that was enough to cause some buzz within the Pirates' front office. That, apparently, has turned up the heat on both parties. One source a few minutes ago told me, "I know that the Dodgers are still players in this." There still are no names on the Tigers' side.

In perhaps the surprise move of the century the NFL not only decided not to fine Ryan Clark for his hit on Wes Welker but basically said it wasn't even a penalty.

Some reports say Jo-Jo Reyes isn't part of the Vasquez deal and it's another starter instead. Some also say Tyler Flowers is part of the deal which would be a nice pickup for the White Sox. In unrelated news, for some reason I just noticed that my cable company seems to have already picked up the MLB Network, but all it is is a continuous series of shots of various White Sox players jumping up and down in celebration with brief cuts to shots of them being interviewed, only without sound. On the bottom there's a message about how the channel launches January 1. I couldn't be more excited.

I'm not sure how common knowledge of the whole Dominican scouting program is, but I really didn't know much about it and thought Dejan Kovacevic's piece in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette yesterday was a pretty interesting read. He's actually doing a 3 part series yesterday, today, and tomorrow about his trip to the Dominican Republic. Today's piece had much more of a Pittsburgh slant, focusing on the deterioration of their old complex and scouting thanks to David Littlefield's now well documented incompetence as GM, and Bob Nutting's attempts to resurrect it since taking control of the club, but part one, and potentially tomorrow's part 3, was what I thought others may enjoy. He goes through the whole process of watching one player get signed and the journey they go through to reach that point. A good read if you're interested in that stuff. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08335/931514-63.stm

    NFL Week 13

Clark's hit on Welker was obviously going to draw a flag in the league this year, but if it was 2005 no one would have even thought twice about it being a legal hit. You can hit a receiver on a tipped ball and it's not like the play was long over before the hit. I think it's less than a second between the tip and the hit and no one had really stopped running yet except Polamalu because he knew exactly what happened to the ball. In the Colts game this year Clark gave up on a play on a tipped ball that turned into a Reggie Wayne TD, which I think may have factored in just as much as the "sending a message" idea. All "defenseless receiver" really means is that you didn't catch the ball. If the ball's there the hit's fine.

Did Welker ever return to the game after Clark lit him up and got the 15 yard penalty? I still don't understand what a defenseless receiver is. I thought if I guy had 2 feet on the ground you could hit him.

    NFL Week 13

ESPN are currently doing a story on how the Patriots enter the stadium to Crazy Train as if it's some sort of unique idea. I think next week they're going to talk about how the Colts sometimes play that Gary Glitter song before a kickoff.

    The Hockey Thread

Suddenly Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby are battling for the league lead in points after Crosby's 4 point night and 9 points in the last 3 games. This early in the season it doesn't mean too much, but I was trying to figure out how impressive it would be to go 1-2 on the same team, then I remembered that 95-96 happened. Lemieux and Jagr both ran away from the rest of the league, and Ron Francis was only 1 point out of third place.

    NFL Week 13

Somehow between the first time I saw the story and the second it went from "Burress will be back in two weeks" to "Burress may be going to jail for 3 and a half years for carrying an unlicensed weapon". It's unclear if he has a concealed carry permit or not, but apparently New York has a minimum 3.5 year jail sentence if he didn't. So the timetable for his return is somewhere between December and never.

    Discuss Your Thanksgiving Meal

We always have the standard stuff, but always begin with some kind of pasta dish. You know the Italians and their pasta. This year they decided to step it up and rather than just noodles and sauce went with stuffed shells. Good stuff, but completely unnecessary really.
