Nice to see Amendola getting accolades... from Jerry Jones no less. Jerry Jones singled out two free agent receivers for praise: Texas Tech's Danny Amendola and Midwestern State's Daniel Polk. “The one that didn't drop the ball was that boy from Texas Tech,” Jones said. “He's real refined. He runs routes well and has got that quickness. He does and will separate.” Of Polk, Jones said, “I like what an athlete he is.” Also this could explain the selection of RB Kevin Smith by Detroit... Lions offensive coordinator Jim Colletto is installing a zone running scheme -- the same scheme in which Smith excelled in college. UCF offensive coordinator Tim Salem once worked under Colletto at Purdue. In Smith's first meetings with the Lions, the material wasn't new. "That's enabling me to come out here and play a little faster and not do as much thinking," Smith said. "I mean, from the snap count to the exact plays' names, we ran the same thing. I've got a little advantage."

Like Edwin said, at least up in New London (although that's gone after this year since I'm graduating) I would often get the Colonial Athletic Association on TV so I could watch games with teams like UMass, New Hampshire, etc. I know that ESPNU has aired FCS games in the past (freakin' Jonathan Coachman covered an Eastern Illinois game I saw. That was surreal in and of itself). Outside of the playoffs though, I don't think any of the major networks air FCS games although I'm hoping that ESPN will show the App. State/LSU one nationally. I've found that I enjoy football almost more now that I'm aware and follow the FCS more than I-A actually... partly because some of these guys not only get drafted and do well but also that there's a playoff at the end so you can cheer a team without thinking, "Crap. They lost in Week 6 to Team A by 10 points so now they'll be #21 and get a spot at the Alamo Bowl" or something.

Well... my aspirations quickly dwindled! 11.0 GB and all but out of it. I blame my inefficiency in drafting with defense in mind and the selection of my home park.

As moderator of said draft... Partly I'm having fun seeing the write ups, however brief they may be and I'm also enjoying the "randomness" of the draft. It's not the type of draft where it's based on 'name recognition' i.e. "Bleach" being taken before "Nevermind" nor is it a draft where everybody has such unique tastes that there is no overlap (although this is partly true but there's still plenty of grousing).

Also I believe in terms of transfer rules, if the school you're transferring too has a major not listed at your prior school (which you then sign up for), then sitting one year gets waived but don't hold me to that. Alabama A&M's been solid since Anthony Jones' arrival in 2002 (consistently at 7-4 or better). They are in need of a QB but don't have much in the way of offensive weapons. RBs Ulysses Banks and Anthony Green combined for 1,336 yards (5.57 YPC) but both are around 5'7" or 5'8" in height. WR Thomas Harris is their only threat at receive with a 17.8 YPC but he's slight (listed at 6'0" and 171 lbs.) The only upside for Perriloux is that Kelcy Luke had 490 touches (101 carries, 389 passes) so he could get a chance to show off his wheels there.

Grambling State could probably use him more... Although they have Sr. QB Brandon Landers on their team but he struggled last season (56% and 23 TD vs. 18 INT). Southern, honestly, probably wouldn't start Perriloux if he transferred. QB Bryant Lee was a Sophomore last year and went nuts (66% with 23 TD vs. 4 INT in 303 attempts). Lee is for all intents and purposes the unquestioned starter there and I doubt he'd be benched for Perriloux, esp. given the issues surrounding Perriloux. Rhett Bomar was disappointing at the FCS level considering his hype too... 59% with 10 TD vs. 6 INT despite averaging 32 passes a game. I just don't see Perriloux being dominant at this level, especially with his lack of experience (79 passes on a stacked team which he won't find at the FCS level) and drug issues.

What a bust Perriloux was... Rivals.com had him rated 5* in 2005 as the best Dual Threat QB ahead of... - Chase Daniel: 3* and 6th - Casey Dick: 3* and 13th - Matt Grothe: 3* and 24th - Justin Willis: 3* and 28th

I'm curious to see how they do with the loss of WR Dexter Jackson who was a key weapon vs. Michigan. UMass is solid although I think this year they'll be relying on the arm of QB Liam Coen to ride them to victories since RB Matt Lawrence graduated. They held Boston College to 24 points last season although they are prone to allowing offenses to explode at times. I can see Texas Tech putting up 42 or 49 points although it wouldn't surprise me to see UMass finish with around 28 or so themselves, maybe higher if Coen's on his game.

Here's an early season spotlight at the interesting FCS/FBS matchups for the 2008 Season. Nice to see some really legit interesting games. Week 1 Eastern Kentucky (9-3) @ Cincinnati Appalachian State (13-2) @ LSU *Easily the match-up of the week* Delaware (11-4) @ Maryland McNeese State (11-1) @ North Carolina Northern Iowa (12-1) @ BYU Week 2 Norfolk State (9-4) @ Kentucky Richmond (11-3) @ Virginia Week 3 Southern Illinois (12-2) @ Northwestern Delaware State (10-2) @ Kent State North Dakota State (10-1) @ Wyoming Week 4 Wofford (9-4) @ South Carolina Massachusetts (10-3) @ Texas Tech... damn! This should be interesting, esp. with QB Liam Coen for UMass.

Some moves made... Detroit Lions signed back RB Artose Pinner and the Atlanta Falcons hired a guy named David Caldwell as director of college scouting. He was the western regional scout for the Indianapolis Colts. Seattle also signed DT Larry Triplett. For the homerism, New England signed DE/LB Vince Redd from Liberty. He measured in at 6'6" and 262 lbs. Ran a 4.54 and 4.63 40 and had a 39.5 vertical. San Diego Chargers signed OT L.J. Shelton to a 2 year deal. I'm intrigued by the Patriots addition as they again add speed and some depth at the LB crew although I'm still wondering WTH Detroit is doing... Would anybody fear Brian Calhoun or Artose Pinner if Kevin Smith or Tatum Bell (please...) went down?

What a fearsome foursome for the Bears... Rex Grossman Kyle Orton Nick Hill (Southern Illinois): Actually an interesting little FCS player. Finished 3rd in QB Efficiency last year behind Josh Johnson and Jonathan Dally. Was 3rd in pass accuracy with 71.47% in 361 attempts and had 28 TD vs. 7 INT. Also has solid enough size at 6'3" and 219 lbs. From NFL Draft Countdown (Was ranked 16th at QB) Strengths: Adequate size and bulk...A very good athlete...Extremely accurate...Can buy time and make plays with his feet...Makes good decisions...Smart with a good football IQ...Very hard worker and a team leader...Is still improving and has some upside. Weaknesses: Did not play against elite competition...Arm strength is adequate but certainly not special...Doesn't throw the deep ball well...Raw and has a lot of work to do when it comes to his technique and throwing mechanics...Was only a starter for 2 years. Notes: Played basketball at Western Kentucky in 2003 (1.7 ppg in 23 games) but did not play football...Does not have all the physical tools you look for but his intangibles are top-notch...Interesting late round sleeper who could be a nice developmental signal caller..Profiles as more of a backup...Would fit well in a West Coast Offense. Caleb Hanie (Colorado State): Threw only 288 passes but completed 64.16% of them and also had 15 INT... great fit. He did have the highest QB Rating in the Mountain West last year though. Measured in at 6'2" and 221 lbs at his pro day.

Also didn't Simms have some mental injury at one point where he was having issues with equilibrium and such?

The understanding I get about that situation isn't he couldn't beat out Palko, it was Dave wasn't going to even let him compete with Palko. Then when he wanted out of Pitt to get a chance to compete, Pitt refused to let him out of his scholarship so he had to pay for entire year at Delaware. The one thing I think being overlooked with Flacco by the scouts is...he had himself a VERY good running attack at Delaware with Omar Cuff and his line was pretty strong. Regardless of level of competition (which honestly I think means DICK when judging whether or not someone can be a good NFL player), there are a lot of things which made me believe he wasn't a first round quarterback. The only thing I saw Flacco have over IMO better QBs like Ricky Santos and Josh Johnson was size and a rifle arm. I also love that every time an FCS/DII player was taken, Kiper had to mention how the level of competition was an issue/question there. Well of course it's an issue but at the same time, many of these teams do play I-A teams on the schedule and many of the guys drafted actually went to the FCS (usually for more playing time) from a I-A program. I find that comment becoming more ridiculous with each passing year when we see the successful guys hitting the NFL (2005-2007): DB Nick Colllins (arguable), WR Vincent Jackson, RB Brandon Jacobs, WR Jerome Mathis (arguable), DB Danieal Manning, QB Tarvaris Jackson (arguable), DB Antoine Bethea, WR Laurent Robinson, LB Zak DeOssie, TE Kevin Boss

I loved seeing the small school guys go by the 6th round... I can't remember this many FCS/Small School guys going before the 6th round (especially in the 1-4). 16 players with 7 (44%) going before the 4th round! DB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie: 1.16 QB Joe Flacco: 1.18 WR Jerome Simpson: 2.15 WR Dexter Jackson: 2.27 DE Kendall Langford: 3.03 DB Antwuan Molden: 3.16 DE Bryan Smith: 3.17 G Chad Rinehart: 3.33 DE William Hayes: 4.04 WR Arman Shields: 4.26 T David Hale: 4.34 DB Brandon Carr: 5.05 RB Jerome Felton: 5.11 RB Tim Hightower: 5.14 LB Kroy Biermann: 5.19 QB Josh Johnson: 5.24 Here are some FCS names to watch during Mini-Camp/Training Camp Miami Dolphins: QB Jayson Foster (Georgia Southern) Chicago Bears: QB Nick Hill (Southern Illinois), WR Curtis Hamilton (Western Kentucky) Buffalo Bills: QB Luke Drone (Illinois State) Jacksonville Jaguars: WR Clyde Edwards (Grambling) Seattle Seahawks: CB Donovan Alexander (North Dakota), CB DeMichael Dizer (Grambling) Dallas Cowboys: DE Marcus Dixon (Hampton) Tennessee Titans: RB Omar Cuff (Delaware) Kansas City Chiefs: QB Ricky Santos (New Hampshire). A favorite of mine... Pittsburgh Steelers: WR Micah Rucker (Eastern Illinois). Really a guy to watch... big size.
