I think that alone is probably what causes the rift between metal/rock and rap more then anything else. People who listen to metal/rock music generally tend to listen for the music involved in it. The guitars, the riffs, all that jazz. With rap, it's the exact opposite. The music is secondary to the lyrics. So obviously, you're going to have two very different fanbases. That's how I see it, anyway. That is a good analysis of the lyrics/music paradox between rap and rock.

Dumbing down your lyrics is something that rappers admit about to make money. Jay Z even admits it in "Moment of Clarity"

That was during the Peter David run on X-Factor, right? I didn't really like Larry Stroman's work. It was quirky, but often a little too quirky for me. David probably wrote the best Quicksilver ever though. One of the funniest things for me was the fact that the strong guy (Guido) was code-named... Strong Guy. Yeah, I'm pretty sure David wrote it.

I've explained it before in here somewhere, Crunk is a Southern (now universal) slang for Party term to anything Party related. Crunk music is Party themed subject matter, Lil Jon says Crunk Rap is similar to Punk Rock, Crunk music consists of Heavy Bass beats, alot of Chanting, Call and Response, and Mosh Pit style dancing. I'd love to see the pit at a crunk show. I didn't know about that. KRS-One best describes the rap/hip hop debate. Here is what he said during an interview I found on theonion.com :
