"Excursions"- A Tribe Called Quest And I have to agree with gtd, snuffbox. Great choice for Buckley. I think "The Sky is a Landfill" is one of his best songs, though "Everybody Here Wants You" also owns.

Wow, thats quite the blanket statement. First, Diz had been playing since the 40's and teamed up with Charlie Parker in the more traditional bebop style. Miles originally played with Bird (Parker) and his first few albums were bebop styled shit (Birth of the Cool) then he moved onto the Kind of Blue sessions with John Coltrane which moved away from bebop. In and around Kind of Blue, he produced orchastra pieces with Gil Evans - Porgy and Bess, and Sketches of Spain which were a lot different from his bebop style. Davis' work with Coltrane signalled the solo career of the tenor player. Coltrane eventually moved into much more spiritual, improvisational, and avant-garde styles (A Love Supreme and Meditations) that would become more "modern". But was much much much much different than Diz...or even Davis' work up to that point. Davis eventually accepted more electric aspects of his music and released In a Silent Way...and later the greatest selling jazz album (Bitches Brew) which signalled the rise of fusion music. So tell me, how is Diz a modern artist? Most hardcore jazzaphobes consider the bebop genre that Parker and Gillespie championed during the 40's and 50's as the definitve style, but considering its orgins were conceived nearly 80 years ago doesn't make it modern. And a career as prolific as Davis' surely didn't always fit the caption of being "modern". Coltrane could be argued that he is more modern with his unique style. If anyone wants to get into jazz music, start at Miles Davis. Check out the essential albums (Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain, Birth of the Cool, Bitches Brew) and see who he worked with. From there, there is a ridiculously entangled relationship of great jazz artists who all played together at one time or another. Generations are connected through Davis from the 30's and 40's up until today. Hence I put modern in quotes. I recently took a jazz class and he referred to the bebop, cool, and funky styles as modern jazz. He didn't have enough time to get into fusion. But, and I admit I'm not the closest follower of jazz, but when most people think of jazz these days, they usually think of either swing or cool. But I'm picking nits here, it's good music, can we at least agree on that? Yes. I just wouldn't consider Diz modern - I could be wrong though. Coltrane and Davis are certainly the pioneers of modern jazz. Dizzy hung around for so long that you could consider him modern, though most wouldn't. Hey 'trane, have you heard Miles' album Adamla? It's really good, though I find parts of it to be a bit too contemporary.

That would be "I Can." At first, I thought it was cool that Nas used Beethoven's "Fur elise" as the bacing rhythm, but after a while, it became rather, um, "meh."

While I love Things Fall Apart, to get The Roots at their best, you must listen to illadelph halflife.

I really like By the Way. Keidas' lyrics are great, Sith and Flea are as brialliant as always, and Fruiscante does a job keeping up with everyone else(face it- he's no virtuoso). blood Sugar Sex Magik it ain't, but it's still a very good album, FAR etter than One Hot Minute.

Oh no doubt. Anything pre-Elephunk by BEP is gold. The new album, however, is not. I feel bad being a piano player and NOT mentioning Thelonious Monk, as he's one of my favourites, right up there with Brubeck and Fats MOTHERFUCKING Domino. **marks out for the mentioning of The Low-End Theory**

    Who's greater

I have to go with Miles. he re-invented and changed the face of Jazz with Bitches Brew. Even Kind of Blue before it was groundbreaking. I'm a fan of both, but I just have to vote Miles.

I will second this opinion. I'm with these guys. Black-Eyed Peas are always good, and for GOD'S SAKE MAN, listen to The Roots. Brubeck, Miles, Coltrane, Parker, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Weather Report, George Benson, Bela Fleck and Jaco Pastorius are definite must listens in the Jazz genre.

    Damn it's Cold

We're jsut getting the coldness here in Wheeling. The last two days were near 60(well, Saturday and Sunday), yesterday it dipped into the upper 20s while still RAINING. Today, I went outside to grab some cds out of my truck, and the fucking locks were frozen. Fuck Mother Nature.

No way. I'll take Saliva over ANY of the new Pop-Punk bands that the kids seem to love these days. Shit, I'll take Saliva over Nickelback and that glorified bar band known as 3 Doors Down.

Bands That Have Improved As They Went

I agree about the seemingly pointless segues like "- Ions" and "Intermission." They don't add any continuity towards the album, especially "Intermission." How that is supposed to set me up for the AWESOMENESS that is "Pushit", I'll never know. Alot of my friends didn't like Lateralus. I love for the reasons you stated, AoO. That, and the fact that Maynard mixes up his vocals very well. He changed his style of singing to a bit of a higher pitch with Aenima, which turned some people I know off. And on Lateralus, he mixes his newer style of vocals in with the rough, gritty and angry style of Undertow and Opiate, paticularly on the album's title track. Still, I like Undertow the best. From the amazing opening track "Intolerance" to the "Crawl Away" which has a great bridge to the mellowed-out feel of "4 Degrees" to the heavy-as-hell, mirky groove of "Flood", there isn't a bad song on the album.
