The US Economy and Current Financial Crisis
SuperJerk replied to Cheech Tremendous's topic in Current Events
Wasn't the 1937-38 jump in unemployment caused because FDR started scaling back New Deal programs in an attempt to balance the federal budget? -
I'm gonna have to pretty much agree with snuffbox on JFK. I think Kennedy gets extra credit with a lot of people for handling the Cuban Missile Crisis and pushing the moon landing.

Nevermind.

The US Economy and Current Financial Crisis

Are the Democrats, Independents, and Republicans referred to in that chart supposed to be how voters from 3 groups approve of the Congress overall, or how voters overall approve of the 3 groups in Congress? The former makes more sense than the latter, since there are not a lot of Indepedents in the Congress to approve or disapprove of. -
I forgot nobody knows as much as you about history, snuffbox. Certainly not the dozens of historians who've written books and articles about the failed policies of the 1920s or how well documented it is that Harding was able to implement very little before his death. Heaven forbid anyone could come to a conclusion different than what the one biography of Harding you read told you to think. The fact that he was only president for 2 years doesn't seem to deter your opinion that he was able to miraculously accomplish things that no one has ever actually credited him with. I mean, what the fuck do I know? I only have a B.S. in History with a 3.6 undergrad GPA. I must have pulled it from a high school text book. Jackass. Well, this is all hypothetical, but many historians have suggested that America's absence from the League (due to the Senate's failure to ratify the Treaty of Versailles and join the League) was a major factor in its failure. I'm no Woodrow Wilson fan, either, but having the world's greatest emerging superpower from the organization might have caused the organization to have more of a backbone in the years leading up to WWII.

You mean his completely idealistic bullshit that he spewed out after claiming that this would be the "war to end all wars," and Europe would enjoy "peace without victory?" The same one who championed the Weimar Republic? The one who separated much of Europe into places that are still killing each other today? No, I meant the 14 Points, the League of Nations, and American leadership in world affairs. And it would have worked too, if it weren't for those meddling kids (i.e. the Republicans in the U.S. Senate). Yeah, and Truman is the one who actually helped civil rights by desegregating the military. And Harding did what? Die in office after appointing a bunch of crooks to his cabinet. That didn't have a lot to do with helping minorities.

*sigh* Here we go again... Woodrow Wilson turned the United States into a world power. While he did segregate the civil service, his visionary ideas outweigh his reactionary (even for his time) views on race. Was Wilson more racist that, say, most of the first 15 presidents? I'm not crazy about Wilson either, but I understand why he was put where he was. Warren Harding died before he could accomplish more than pass a budget reform act, though it was badly needed. The isolationist policies he championed were the opposite of what the world needed at the time. Though not his fault, his election signaled a moving away from the progressive ideals of Teddy Roosevelt and Wilson, ushering in perhaps the greatest era of greed and corruption of the 20th century. His quickly back-tracked from the anti-lynching law he proposed. The guy on that list I see who put the U.S. on a progressive civil rights trajectory sits at #5, by the way.

Not to mention that doesn't even LOOK LIKE the Intercontinental Championship belt.

My opinion: Reagan, Kennedy, Grant, and LBJ are too high, while Andrew Jackson is too low. The top four are right, except I might switch FDR with Washington. No comment on Nixon and Harding.

Man, if only Harry Reid had a backbone...

Maybe hindsight is clouding my judgement (most people didn't realize how incompetent Bush was until after 2005), but given the state of the economy and world affairs in 2000....how the fuck did Al Gore lose? George W. Bush didn't have a single issue or vast surplus of charisma going for him to be able to do as well as he did...even given liberal apathy towards Gore at the time to lose votes to Nader...it still doesn't add up.

Creepily enough, when I was in 6th grade, circa 1993, there was a girl who already had a 'reputation.' I mean *obviously* it was all b.s. rumors (I hope) but Christ. The specific set up was: "Hey man, if you're ever going out with Jane, and you want a piece of her, just take her to the Holiday Inn." I mean come on it had to be kids spreading dirty lies. This story makes me question my skepticism. The first time I ever heard of classmates having sex was towards the end of 8th grade. It was actually pretty amusing, it was reading class and about five of us got to take our books into a fairly private stairway to read away from the group. Among our little group was a guy and a girl who I'd never known to even be romantically linked and they were fighting about some sex they'd had the previous weekend. He was complaining that it had been his first time and she'd ruined it by just laying there and not really doing anything at all. Then later in high school I started hearing stuff about classmates I'd known who had been doing it back in 7th grade. Made me feel really naive. 5th grade back when the sex talks started up in heatlh/science class... guys were making bets on when they lose their virginity. About a week later my friend Mitchell was caught fucking one of the blond girls that developed really fast and looked to be about 15 in the girl's bathroom. I think most of the kids I knew who were bragging about ther sex lives in junor high and even into high school were lying. There was probably always one or two popular boys who all the girls had a crush on who was getting some action, but they weren't the braggers. It was always the obnoxious, asshole kids that did most of the bragging.

Sens. McCain and Graham complain Obama not doing a good job as president because he got a bill passed without their help. **sigh**

I think what probably happened to the original planet, Kobol, is that the Cylons and humans had a war and parted ways. I'm glad they came up with a good explanation for why the Cylon numbering always went 1-6, then jumped to 8. Yeah, looks like Cavill's been the puppetmaster throught this whole mess from the beginning. How did he survive being choked to death by D'Anna in the episode where they blew up the Hub? It had to have been the same Cavill because Boomer was with him when that happened also. He couldn't have been resurrected because the Hub was destroyed a few minutes later. I don't understand why Tigh and Caprica Six are all lovey-dovey and playing house, even if she is his baby mama. Remember, he though he was nailing Ellen when he was doing her in the brig all those times.

No. Keep the two kids apart and away from the baby so they learn absolutely nothing and make the same mistake again? Great message for teenagers - hey, have a baby young and someone else will take responsibility for it! Keeping the baby from being fucked up for life is more important than whether or not a couple of kids learn a lesson. They aren't going to learn anything anways if their own parents insist on keeping up the illusion that being a parent at 13 has a chance of working out for the best. How do you keep them from doing this again? QUIT LETTING THE BOY SPEND THE NIGHT AT THE GIRLS HOUSE ALL THE TIME.
-
Maybe she can be appointed Commerce Secretary, then the national media can fawn over her and we can have debates over whether she's hotter than Sarah Palin.
-
This is ridiculous. What should happen is the girl's parents should raise the child (the boy's family is in no position to do so), and the two kids should be kept apart. The idea that there two kids should be allowed to raise the kid themselves like a normal couple is insane.

Two points: 1) I call bullshit on this article. 2) I call bullshit on most state's rights advocacy on general principle. Hey, everybody, we need freedom from the federal government by give near-dictatorial powers to state governments! I'm not against states wanting greater control over how it spends education funds or protection from unfunded mandates, but when states rights is used as a rallying cry to deprive individuals of constitutional rights and freedoms (which still happens a hell of a lot), there's a problem.

Wait...what? What the fuck did they mean when they said "foriegn borrowing" and what does it have to do with the trade deficit? It reminds me of people who think that the American government financing deficit spending by taking out a giant loan at the First Bank of China or something.
