This Week in College Football 9/7 - 9/9

That was the worst roughing the passer call I've ever seen in my life. That's all I have to say.

Charlie Weis is such a baller. I mean who else runs a draw on 4th and 3. It's like he just says to himself "I know this play is going to work and I'm going to run it, conventional wisdom be damned".

I don't see how you'd expect Louisville not to drop when they lose one of the top 20 players in the country for the season. It's not like this is November or something where you're looking at a catalogue of accomplishments. The ratings are still completely fluid as voters are using the limited information they have to guess how good the teams are going to be. I think the idea that Team X earned it's preseason rank, and shouldn't be dropped until it loses is one of the ideas that's more damaging to college football than almost any other.

    WEEDS

It's pretty amusing. It's the only show I record and watch all of every week. I still record some of those stupid wrestling shows, but I fast-forward through half of ECW and about 3/4 of Raw.

    NCAA Football 07

Well, it's probably about time to let the thread die, but I just had my best game and I wanted to post about it. I was playing Wake at home, and they had a 24-22 lead with just over 2:00 left and 1st and goal from my 1 yard line. I only had one timeout remaining and actually briefly considered letting them score. Anyway, I stopped them for half a yard on 1st down, got a sack for a loss of 7 on 2nd, then tackled a receiver for a 5 yard completion and ultimately made them kick a 19 yard field goal. I got the ball back with 0:59 left and made a quick drive down the field with no timeouts left, scoring the winning TD on a 26 yard strike with 0:08 remaining for a 30-27 win. A goal-line stand and a late TD drive with no timeouts makes for the best come from behind win I've had yet.

Smackdown Spoilers for the 9/8 Airing

It makes sense if they're using it to end the Booker/Batista feud. I really hope this is all leading to Cena going to Smackdown. If Cena did go over and win the title, I think Cena/Batista would be a pretty good main event for WM.

They were perfectly passable the first week. I just didn't think much of them going into the season. When I did my preseason Top 25, (before the Bomar controversy), OU was the only Big XII team in my Top Ten. I did rethink things enough to put Texas ahead of some teams I had them behind just through further research (Michigan and Florida to name a couple), but I still don't think they're Top 5 material.

What's your point? If Oregon beats USC, they'll probably have smooth sailing to the national title too. Doesn't mean they'll do it, and doesn't mean they're a Top 5 team. Texas is a really good squad, and if I did rankings out, I'd probably have them at #7, but I don't see anything to make me think they should be any higher at this point.

I agree that LSU's underrated. I'm not going to do a whole Top 25 this week, but if I did a Top 5, it would look something like this: 1. Ohio State 2. USC 3. LSU 4. Notre Dame 5. West Virginia Yeah, the Irish looked a little rough around the edges, but the fact remains that they went on the road against an upper-tier opponent the first week of the season and picked up a win. The only other team that can say that right now is Florida State. West Virginia at #5's close as Texas and Florida State are right there, but they do have a ton of starters back from the team that went 12-1 and won the Sugar Bowl last year. It's a shame that we won't get to see them tested more than the one game against Louisville, because they really do have a hell of an offense.

I was attending classes at Washington State last year, so I was rooting for them, yeah. I've liked Ga. Tech since I was a little kid though, and now that I'm not going to WSU, i don't really feel any connection to their football program anymore.

Both defenses played tremendous, and I actually think Miami's defense played a little better, but FSU had Fagg to make big plays on the offensive side when they needed them and Miami just didn't have anyone to do it on offense. I wasn't sold on FSU going into this game, but I am now. They're a legitimate contender to win it all.

I've really enjoyed this game despite the lack of scoring, but I really don't see how you can punt here. With the new clock rules and this little time in the game, you're giving away your best shot at winning the game. Even if you get a three and out, you're going to have less than 1:30 left.

OMG! Not sports betting! I hate when people mention that. It just ruins all the sports discussion for me. Edgerrin James must be really insecure. Anyway, I thought Miami's defense looked absolutely suffocating in that first half. It seems like they start the season like this every year, but I really think they're looking at an ACC title. CFN's prediction of going 11-1 picking up a loss in Atlanta sounds about right to me.

Gambling talk in the sports threads

The Georgia Tech shit's because they're my favorite team. That's pretty simple. It's not because I thought the bet against Notre Dame was such a great value or something, I was just getting pumped up for my favorite team playing their biggest showcase game in a couple years. Actually, most of my posts in the college football threads are usually just analyzing how good the teams look, where they should be ranked, and who has the best chance of winning the national title. That sort of thing. If 90% of my posts are good objective analysis, 9.5% are blatant homerism when my favorite NBA team's in the Finals or my favorite college team is opening at home against the #2 team in the country, and 0.5% are sports betting results, I think that's pretty reasonable. Oh, and unless the "first college football season you where here" was last year, then you didn't notice me talking about bets, because I wasn't even doing it then. The first sports bet I ever made was when GT was facing UConn in the championship, and I didn't have a regular account until last fall.

That's huge. Just saw what happened now. It's kinda funny because all the announcers were talking about getting Brohm out of the game since he'd had the knee trouble, and then Bush turns around and breaks his tibia. I said I didn't see them losing a game before this, but now, I think Miami takes them down. They'll still be breaking in their new backs at that point and the Canes have too good of a defense to be beaten with a one-dimensional attack. Too bad as I think the Cardinals could have made it to Tempe if they stayed healthy. My new national championship prediction? Ohio State over USC. I was thinking about bumping the Buckeyes up anyway after how good they looked against NIU, and now, they'll likely make it in, even if they pick up a loss.

Gambling talk in the sports threads

Jesus. I already said I was completely wasted the night I was posting all that crap immediately after a good win, and that was the only reason for it. I even apologized the next day. Get off it already. If it really bothers you that I make a passing mention of the spread in the ISU game, then I guess that's your problem, not mine. I went back and looked at the college football thread for this week, and of the 15 posts I made there, that was the only one that mentioned gambling. I never claimed to be getting rich or anything either. I'm up about 30K total the last four months since I started treating poker as a job. My sports betting's mostly recreational, just as something to enjoy the games more, and make a little bit of money on something I know pretty well.

Looking even better now at 31-0. They've been dominant on both sides of the ball throughout the first half. They're so good at home that I can't see them losing to Miami or WVU, and they don't have a tough road game on the schedule. I really don't see them losing a game this year.

Bored's College Football Pick 'Em - Week 1

I was just so convinced that UCLA was going to be down this year that I wanted to pick against them at all costs. I was really seeing like a 5-6 year for them after losing pretty much their whole offense when their defense wasn't good to begin with. With how bad the Pac-Ten's looked early though, they might be fine. Cal got destroyed by Tennessee, Arizona State almost lost to NAU, Washington snuck by SJSU, and Washington State predictably got destroyed. Just another reason why I think USC will roll this year.

I was out all day, but here's the cliff notes of my day's thoughts on college football. -That GT/ND game was depressing. The Jackets could totally match them talent wise, but every big break went in ND's favor. The helmet to helmet hit that kept the drive alive for the Irish when it would have been 4th down. The crazy QB sneak on 2nd down at the end of the first half. The catch that got overturned in the fourth quarter. Even that stupid 4th and 1 sneak at the end where GT's D-line parted like the Red Sea. I don't know if it's the influence of Charlie Weis or what, but it seemed like every pivotal play went in ND's favor. -Ohio State = really, really, good. I am completely sold on them now. They took a pretty good NIU team, and made them look like a D-II squad. Yeah, there are a couple of holes in the defense, but the offense is every bit the unstoppable juggernaut they were made out to be. I had my doubts that a Tressel team could really light up the scoreboard, but I sure don't after today. -USC's really good too. There's no way in hell they lose a regular season game. When you add in their schedule, I'm still more confident that they will reach the championship game than OSU. If the Buckeyes do make it, they'd be more likely to win, but I think USC's as close to a lock for Tempe as you can get.

Bored's College Football Pick 'Em - Week 1

Wow, I got raped this week in the contest. It's funny because I did really well in my picks ATS (10-4), but for some reason, my straight-up results were just bad this week. Actually, it's a simple reason: I gave the mid-majors way too much credit, and teams like Utah and Miami(OH) bit me in the ass for it. Especially early in the year, I should probably be going with the established teams until I have reason to do otherwise.

God, I am so, so, pumped for the Georgia Tech game tonight. I was up late last night , but I subconsciously knew I couldn't sleep through College Gameday from Atlanta, and I woke up about half an hour in. I can't wait for CJ to tear up the Irish.

Im going to need some advice..

She has kids? I must have missed that part. That definitely puts a damper on things. You could still go for it if the opportunity presents itself, but I'd say that takes it past the point of being worth chasing. The 6 foot guy with the girl in the wheelchair I could see, but the jaded mother with the guy who's never had a relationship? That sounds iffy. I don't know if you have any other prospects, but if you do, you should probably pursue them instead.

She looks really cute, I'd definitely go for it if I were you Marvin. Her quote does look a little bitchy though. I mean there are soooo many handicapped parking places, it always really annoys me that I'm not supposed to use them. Every time I go by 8 open spots when the lot's full, I debate about it with myself, but I never actually park in one.

It's pretty simple why losing Bomar hurts them. Paul Thompson's worse. If they had a decent backup, it wouldn't have been a problem, but with none of the freshmen ready, you're going from an average QB to a way, way, below average one.
