    TWiB 7/3 - 7/9

Some great news for the Braves- (mlb.com) Chris Reitsma won't pitch again this year. His status for next season will be determined by the type of surgery prescribed by Dr. James Andrews. "He's going to have surgery for sure -- season-ending surgery," Braves head trainer Jeff Porter said. "At this point yet, we don't know what he's going to have. There's still some question marks as to what's going on with the MRI." When Braves physicians looked at the MRI taken of Reitsma's right elbow on Monday, they determined there is definitely enough damage to prevent a return this year. But it will be Andrews who determines whether the right-handed reliever needs Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery. Reitsma is scheduled to visit Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., on July 17. If he doesn't need to undergo the Tommy John surgical procedure, during which a ligament is replaced into the damaged elbow area, Reitsma will likely need to have an ulnar nerve transposition. The latter procedure would require about six months of rehab, which is half of what is required with the former. Reitsma has been battling numbness in his right hand all season, but didn't tell the Braves until after his June 11 appearance in Houston. By that time, he'd blown four of 12 save opportunities and compiled a 9.11 ERA. A few days later, it was determined the numbness was being caused by bone spurs located in his elbow. He was placed on the disabled list on June 13 and returned on Saturday night, only to be bothered with the same ailment. He exited that appearance after hitting the Orioles' Miguel Tejada with a pitch. This has been a trying year for Reitsma, who entered this season with hopes of being able to hold on to the closer's role. During the previous two seasons, while working as both a closer and setup man, he appeared in nearly half of the Braves games. He made a franchise-record 84 appearances in 2004.
  3. Routh was on Late Show with David Letterman
  4. 2nd round pick and a conditional. Good, it's 2.55 mil off the books. Now here's one- If Gary Roberts wants to play in TO so bad, can he re-do his contract to make less money? I know he wouldn't want to do that, but he seems to want to play with the Leafs really badly.
  5. I was thinking that. Why can't they just send Roberts to the minors then and then not have to pay him?
  6. From tsn- Ice Chips for Wednesday, July 5 The Stars are expected to sign free agents Jeff Halpern and Matthew Barnaby today. Stars general manager Doug Armstrong confirmed that he was in discussions with the two players and said talks are "well down the road." Barnaby's deal is said to be one year for $625,000; Halpern is said to be ready to sign a four-year deal worth $2 million per season. - Dallas Morning News/Fort-Worth Star-Telegram Free agent goaltender Ed Belfour is expected in Detroit today. The Red Wings want to put him through a rigorous physical because he's 41 and coming off back surgery... Dominik Hasek, 41, is also on the market, and if the Wings decide to go the trade route, there's Buffalo's Martin Biron. San Jose's Evgeni Nabokov is the best of the available goaltenders, but because he just signed a four-year extension worth $21.5 million in February, the Wings would have to trade away a player of near-equal money to keep enough salary-cap room to fill other holes. The Wings have 13 players signed to contracts totaling $31.287 million against next season's $44-million cap. - Detroit News Panthers coach Jacques Martin said he spoke with Gary Roberts again on Tuesday and that there was no development on the left winger's request for a trade back to Toronto for family reasons. Citing a source, the Toronto Star reported that Roberts has told Panthers General Manager Mike Keenan if he isn't traded to the Maple Leafs, he will retire and return to Toronto. Martin would neither confirm nor deny Roberts expressed that to the team. Keenan added that he would expect Roberts or his agent to call him personally "if there was an ultimatum or a decision of that kind." If Roberts, 40, retires, the Panthers would not have to pay his $2.25 million salary for 2006-07 but it would count against their salary cap. - Sun Sentinel With Wednesday's 5 p.m. deadline looming for restricted free agents to file for arbitration, Devils GM Lou Lamoriello began negotiating Monday with center Scott Gomez's father/agent Carlos on a possible long-term deal. Lamoriello is also trying to find cap room to re-sign restricted free agent right wing Brian Gionta, who, like Gomez, can be unrestricted next year. The problem is the Devils already have more than $41 million committed toward the $44 million salary cap for next season. Teams can go as much as 10 percent over the cap until the first day of the regular season, but even that doesn't leave Lamoriello much wiggle room with restricted free agents David Hale and Paul Martin also to be re-signed (and also arbitration eligible) and the backup goalie spot still vacant. Gomez, 26, earned $2.204 million last year while Gionta, 27, earned $627,000 - Bergen Record While the Coyotes have been active in signing unrestricted free agents, they are not close in coming to terms with their own restricted players. The biggest name out there who has yet to re-sign is Ladislav Nagy. Nagy is arbitration eligible but his agent says playing in Europe next season is one of the options he and the 27-year-old forward are considering. Nagy made $1.976 million last year. The Coyotes made him a qualifying offer for the same amount last month. He is believed to be seeking a substantial raise, likely in the $3 million-$4 million range. - East Valley Tribune Yanic Perreault's agent, Jay Fee, says he has had "some preliminary talks" with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He added that several other clubs have expressed interest, but no front-runner has emerged. Andre Savard, the Penguins' new assistant coach, was the general manager who signed Perreault for Montreal in 2001, and Michel Therrien coached him with the Canadiens. And when Perreault had a solid 2004-05 season in Nashville, Ray Shero, the guy now charged with assembling the Penguins' roster, was the Predators' assistant GM. - Post Gazette
  7. Roenick goes to Phoenix and Rutuu goes to Pittsburgh. Raycroft gets 3 yr/6 mil from the Leafs.
  8. And when Vince beat HHH for the belt. The last time the WWE title changed hands was the SD! in 2003, not the RAW in 01 No, that just shows how people get their facts wrong a lot.
  9. I was wondering if all the hyperbole they did (Joey Chestnut...a true American hero) was them just being funny or if they were serious. But seriously, how can someone eat so many hot dogs?
  10. That's flawed logic. Plus, Holly's injury was his on fault.
  11. The fact that it didn't do better then War of the Worlds is a slight disappointment
  12. See No Evil. Why do you want to know this?
  13. Pronger a Duck: (from tsn) Chris Pronger, the biggest name on the summer trade block is going to California. The Anaheim Ducks have traded one roster player, one non-roster player and several conditional high-end draft picks to the Oilers in exchange for Pronger. Pronger, 31, put up 56 points and a plus-2 rating during the 2005-2006 regular season and was a stalwart for the Oilers during their playoff run to the Stanley Cup final, recording 21 points and a plus-10 rating in 24 games. The 2000 Hart and Norris Trophy winner is regarded as one of the very best defenders in the league, and joins a Ducks defence corps that includes 2004 Norris Trophy winner Scott Niedermayer. Pronger has 456 points and a plus-127 rating in an 802-game career that has seen him play in Hartford, St. Louis and Edmonton. He also has 72 points and a plus-25 rating in 109 career playoff games. The 6-foot-6, 220 pound defenceman signed a five-year, $31.25-million contract with the Oilers last August, then surprised the team with his request for a trade shortly after the season due to personal reasons
  14. According to tsn, Stevie Yzerman is going to retire today
  15. I saw it advertised on the front page all weekend, so that's really no surprise
  16. You thought it would beat Spider-Man 2? Yea, that was never going to happen.
  17. It's running behind what War of the Worlds and Spider-Man 2 did the previous two years, but is running ahead of Batman Begins, T:3 and King Kong all did in its first 5 days.
  18. Yea, they talked about how Renteria had a fishing trip planned All Star Weekend that he might have to cancel and if that Andruw and McCann were going with him, they would have to cancel to. It was really funny
  19. I know they probably need him, but the Nets bringing back Cliff Robinson disgusts me.
  20. 7 years for Elias?? That's a looong time.
  21. goldengreek, I'm sick of your fucking power trip.
  22. Guys, I think Kotz was joking. (Now I'm doing it!)
  23. http://torontosun.com/Sports/Hockey/2006/0...661209-sun.html Why McCabe took his time agreeing to the contract
  24. Stephen A. Smith said the exact same thing. But even so, it sounds like they didn't have to draft him at #20.
  25. I really liked Villaneuva. I guess this means Mike James isn't coming back.
