EMO music: love it, hate it?

You'll find emo is generally considered to be a dirty word here, although personally I find emo can be great in the right hands. Funeral For A Friend are utterly tremendous, probably the best live act Britain has produced for ages and My Chemical Romance are also marvellous. Taking Back Sunday are really hit or miss I find, more often than not as a miss. The problem with emo is not falling into the trap of being really sickeningly whining, which is the problem with bands like Dashboard Confessionals or wank like Midtown. Brand New are slowly evolving as a band, with "Deja Entendu" being much better than their debut, the OneLineDrawing album "The Volunteers" was one of the smartest, most inventive albums released in 2004 and with above-average acts like Bullet For My Valentine and Alexisonfire looking to break through this year, the outlook for superior-emo is pretty good. Not sure I'd call Avenged Sevenfold emo though...

    English Football

God, I love Martin Jol, undefeated in 7 games, with 17 goals scored and only 4 conceeded. I can't believe this is the same team who were already going back to their usual tricks under Jacques Santini just 2 months ago. I can't remember us being this good before in my lifetime. Of course, we've got United and Chelsea up next, so it'll probably all go sour quickly, but I'm so enjoying this while it lasts

Your "band to watch in 2005"

I see 2005 being the year that Bullet For My Valentine cast aside the lazy Lostprophets comparrisons (they're both Welsh, both have pretty-boy lead singers and, er, thats it) and make a name for themselves. And the new Idlewild album will be tremendous too.

    Ugliest band in rock.

For a no-talent, all-girl pop group, whose sole purpose was to be marketable and attractive, mid-90's failures Vanilla were pretty grim This is the only photo I could find, but trust me, it's the best they ever looked

    Recent Purchases

Enjoying the warm X-mas afterglow that is the sales, I picked up the following for £5 each: "Boyhitscar" by Boyhitscar "The Remote Part" by Idlewild "Blackened Sky" by Biffy Clyro "Lipstick Traces: A Secret History Of" by the Manic Street Preachers

    Movies that killed a career

"The Adventures Of Rocky And Bullwinkle" pretty much killed off Piper Perabo's career, and I haven't seen much of Keenan and Kel since that film either. "The Punisher" pretty much wrote off Dolph Lundgrun as a major player too.

    Your wrestler biases

Bias towards: Ivory, Batista, William Regal, Charlie Haas, Steven Richards and, since this isn't WWE exclusive, the Messiah Bias against: Orton, John Cena, HBK, JBL, the Dudley Boyz (including Spike) and Lita
  12. Green Day And also I'd agree with the previous mention of Travis. Not bad enough to hate, have the occasional great moment ("All I Want To Do Is Rock", for example), but totally, utterly average

    Recent Purchases

"Start Here" by the Gloria Record "Bob Mould" by Bob Mould on tape for 99p, which made my drive from Nottingham to Coventry a lot more bearable "A Present For Everyone" by Busted, which is brilliant (obviously) and a Sorepoint Records sampler, which was £2, features a really good acoustic version of "The Quiet Things No-one Ever Knows" by Brand New, as well as some band called the AKA's, who are pretty good in a "We're clearly not Devo...but we'd like to be" kind of way

    English Football

Just enough time before enjoying todays MOTD to express my utter delight at thrashing bastard Southampton, a healthy measure of revenge for the demoralising 4-0 FA Cup defeat a year or so back. Only problem being that interest in Super Jermain Defoe will have to be on the up after today, which would leave us with only two fantastic strikers to play.

The lack of respect for Busted in this thread is at best foolish, at worst near blasphemy.

Comments which don't warrant a thread.

That's not the national anthem. Isn't "God Save the Queen" England's national anthem? "Rule Brittania" does rule because it was the British Bulldog's entrance music. Technically, "Land Of Hope And Glory" is the English national anthem, whereas "God Save The Queen" is the British national anthem. 2 random thoughts: 1) The book "24 Hour Party People" would be a whole lot better if Tony Wilson would accept the fact that the Happy Mondays were, on the whole, shit, and that Shaun Ryder certainly isn't "the best lyricist since Dylan" 2) "Going To Town" by the Afghan Whigs is so magnificently sleazy that listening to it on headphones makes even a dull tramride to Nottingham city centre feel interesting

Problem with any major volume increases is that the speakers in my car can't really deal with them, instead transforming great songs into unlistenable static noise, which is why I prefer my passengers not to talk much during "DWTKIYAL", purely so I can actually hear it.

Comments which don't warrant a thread.

In spite of the protests of my housemates, "Sweet 69" by Babes In Toyland sounds great when driving to work at 7.30 in the morning, while "Nobody's Hero" by the Stiff Little Fingers makes me airdrum the steering wheel, to the concern of my passengers. However, in spite of it's greatness, "Don't Want To Know If You Are Lonely" by Husker Du doesn't work, due to quieter production demanding a vast increase in stereo volume.

    Worst Song(s) of the Year

"What Became Of The Likely Lads" by the Libertines is beyond horrible, the kind of grating, dull toss that I'd feel horrified by if a third-on-the-bill pub band played it. The fact it made the UK top 10 amplifies the hatred by 100. "Take Me Out" by Franz Ferdinand runs it a very close second though, mainly because it has one of the few guitar parts to make me feel actively ill.
