IIRC, ska was Jamacan music that was modified by mainly-white, mainly-British punk bands around the end of the 70's. Musically, I think that ska punk is more guitar/bass/drumm based, whereas ska was originally based around brass instruments.

The Clash and Madness both did a fair bit of ska. In fact, try anything released off the Two Tone label for some Early 80's British ska (a la The Specials)

That's because cRap is shit. R&B has some good people around now and some Jazz is good. But cRap is just horrible. It amazes me that people can completely write off rap. In the last few years, rap has probably had the best lyrics, the best beats and the best production in the musical world, and the tunes aren't bad either.
