Watching Summerslam on WWE 24/7. Moolah made what I believe was her last appearance. She really looked quite frail now that I see it. (And quite honestly, Mae's antics crack me up.)

Some of the matches I most associate with Dibiase are Royal Rumbles. 1989 with DiBiase buying #30, and 1990 with DiBiase going 30+ minutes.

Why does a show have to mean anything? I find it amusing that fans crave booking of yesteryear, but get upset when shows contain no plot advancement. For a fan in that era, novelty was a hell of a lot of fun. Survivor Series, Royal Rumbles, etc. Even a six-man tag or battle royal was fun to watch, because it broke up the style a bit.

The Pillman-Liger match is VERY well known to anyone who was a fan in that era.

Used her wiles to get control of American women's wrestling (mainly the world title and training/booking the women for NWA territories) away from Billy Wolfe. Having read about Billy Wolfe, is that a bad thing?

I know we should respect the dead and all, but that's ridiculous. She was a terrible wrestler who was champion due to charming people and making political coups, plus she's been blamed for women's wrestling in the US becoming a total sideshow as opposed to having some credibility as it did before she took over. Why is it though that no one supplanted Moolah? Could one person really dominate to that degree? I can't blame it all on Moolah. Lou Thesz for example disliked womens wrestling, that certainly hurt. I question if womens' wrestling can truly succeed in some cultures. It worked in Japan the last 20-30 years, and that's about it. It was never hot in Mexico to my knowledge. The only promoter in the last 50 years to make money with womens' wrestling was ironically enough Vince McMahon. A lot of people will always view womens' wrestling as a shameful sideshow, no matter how it's booked. Not that I'm on any sort of crusade here. It just seems more complicated than at first glance.

It's funny, how can a good show be chock full of bad matches and yet be a good show? For one thing, none of the matches were outright terrible. The action kept moving throughout the matches, little resting involved. The Slaughter match and Goobledygooker were awful, but they were obviously killing time to give Hogan a chance to rest for the finale. Why Kerry Von Erich? The guy was OVER in the 1980s.

While Moolah earned her criticism in her career, she gets a great deal of credit for staying in shape at her age as long as she did. Even though she was 84, it is somewhat surprising to hear her passing.

Is it because I'm supposed to post in this thread? I didn't close it, but we already have a thread regarding Rodriguez opting out of his contract.

PWI put a Flair vs. Andre match in second runner-up spot in their match of the year awards in 1977. I'm pretty sure Andre had a series of NWA title matches against the champion, which he'd win by DQ, and it might have been Flair he faced. I do recall having read that Harley Race defended the NWA Title against Andre sometime, somewhere. I even remember reading that Race gave Andre a bodyslam! But I have no knowledge of Flair defending the Title against the Giant. I checked my PWI almanaq and you're right. It'd be nice to know if Flair ever actually defended against Andre, what kind of show it was, etc. I think most if not all of Andre's matches against Flair occurred in the late 1970s. They might have been for Flair's United States championship (Mid-Atlantic version). I doubt Andre ever wrestled against Flair for the NWA World title.

Depends on the "impact bat." If it's a hitter with similar pro experience (say B.J. Upton or Andy LaRoche), it makes a lot of sense.

The genesis of the feud was Honky Tonk Man shoving Elizabeth to the mat in order to hit Savage with a guitar. Since she was part of the feud, it would have made sense to have her involved in Honky's defeat.

I think the Cubs should tender Prior, and they should broadcast the arbitration live. What kind of salary can you possibly ask for when you've produced a 7.21 ERA over nine starts in the last two seasons? (Note, I'm actively working on how much money I could ask.) I don't think that you can take a paycut of more than 20% from your previous year's salary. Mark Prior made $3.75 million last year. That too. Ok, flat out forget arbitration then. The rest of my previous post still stands.

Understand that an arbitration case isn't really about how good the player is. It's about what players with their experience and ability make, and determining a fair salary. In Mark Prior's case, his comparable pitchers are guys like John Patterson and Brandon Backe. He could make up to $750000 to a million, I don't think they can argue further than that. I think the best case for each side is a contract of maybe the league minimum, with innings pitched bonuses that can push it to a few million.

I thought the atmosphere for the Hogan/Goldberg match was fantastic. So what if they should have saved it for PPV? That's their problem, not ours. Crowd was absolutely nuts the whole time, in a stadium setting no less. My complaint about the match is that WCW's production was poor. Goldberg kicking out of the legdrop is a big moment, and they practically miss it. Vader/Flair is excellent. One of my five favorite Flair matches, easily. And easily the best Flair as babyface match.

I doubt it. Signing Rodriguez would mark a drastic departure from any strategy Loria has ever exercised. It would indicate some sort of hope and faith to the fans of the Florida Marlins. Loria has never done anything to intentionally encourage his fans.

It is real, sort of. It's not a serious offer, but it's a legitimate publicity shot by the Mud Hens.

Rick Rude had the matches with the Ultimate Warrior, definately career highlights. For DiBiase, it's the multi-gimmick match against Jim Duggan.

Those leaderboards pass the smell test at least. I believe that information is in the 2008 Bill James Handbook. CanadianChris, check out the actual Ford Frick ballot on mlb.com. Practically EVERY announcer is eligible for nomination by the fans. It doesn't make him close to the award.

I was gonna say "I think you just have to show up to work to get on the ballot," but Hawk doesn't even do that. There are some downright embarassing names on that ballot. Chip Carey, Mike Shannon, Chris Wheeler, Michael Kay, John Sterling? Quality names that get my endorsement: Bill King, Tom Cheek, Jon Miller, Dan Shulman.
