Debate on the worst PPVs of all time!

Here's my contribution: WrestleMania IX (April 4, 1993) Tatanka beat Shawn Michaels by Countout (18:13), thus Michaels remained Intercontinental Champion The Steiner Brothers beat The Headshrinkers (14:22) [scott pinned Samu] Doink the Clown beat Crush (8:28) Razor Ramon beat Bob Backlund (3:45) Money Inc. beat Hulk Hogan & Brutus Beefcake by Disqualification (18:27), thus remaining Tag Team Champions Lex Luger beat Mr. Perfect (10:57) The Undertaker beat Giant Gonzales by Disqualification (7:33) Yokozuna beat Bret Hart (8:53) to become WWF Champion Hulk Hogan beat Yokozuna (0:21) to become WWF Champion The opener really wasn't that bad, but it wasn't that great either and the count out finish was terrible, especially at the biggest show of year. The Steiners were a great team, and the Headshrinkers were a decent team but they just didn't click. The Frankensteiner was always impressive though Doink vs Crush wasn't anything worth writing about. Razor vs Backlund was boring as hell. Another cheap finish in the tag titel match ruined it. The match was nothing special but the crowd was hot for it. Lex Luger over Mr Perfect. Amazing how when Luger used his 'steel plate' forearm as a heel it was the worst thing in the world, but later that year as a face the commentators loved him doing it to Yokozuna. On the match, it was boring. The post match beatdown by HBK on Perfect wasn't too bad though. The Undertaker vs Giant Gonzales. Doesn't need any description. Yoko vs Bret Hart. Bret tried, and was looking good in his attempts here, but it had another bad finish that made him look like a chump. Yoko vs Hulk. 20 seconds and Hulk is champ again. And then I throw-up.

    Make a bold prediction

The Highlight Reel will NOT directly lead into a spur of the moment match. Victoria will pose for Playboy just prior to Wrestlemania. Baby O'Mac (Shane's son) comes in to get revenge on Kane. The feud ends with Gene Snitsky turning and killing Baby. This brings back Shane for a feud with Gene. Rico will win the US title. The Marine, starring John Cena, will rake in heaps of dollars. He will then be given the World title and spark a new 'golden era' for WWE. Kane's movie will be nowhere near as successful. Same goes with HHH's movie, but WWE will put a spin on it that makes it sound like it's the second coming of Titanic. The Rock will make 5 appearances spread out over the entire year. Test will return and get a big push, that will actually work. Ric Flair will take a minimum of 50 back body drops.

    Undertaker/ Hogan

Does anyone remember that guy that was always in the front row dressed as Hulk Hogan? He was devestated when Hulk lost the Survivor Series match. Anyone know - Was he a plant, or just a really, really crazy fan? I believe he was also at ringside, devestated again, when Hulk lost to Yokozuna at King of the Ring in 93.

Heidenreich, Michael Cole and Rico will participate in PPV's first ever Hotel Room Hide-the-sausage match, where the winner is the first to, well, you know, 'finish' his opponent off.

    Davey Boy Smith/Shawn Michaels

I was thinking about this the other day, and I couldn't come up with anytime that Davey Boy Smith beat HBK on television. Here's all the encounters I could remember: 1992 - Shawn wins IC title from Bulldog 1995 - Shawn eliminates Bulldog last from Royal Rumble 1995 - Shawn/Diesel defeat Yokozuna/Bulldog (substituting for Owen) for tag titles 1996 - draw at Beware of Dog PPV 1996 - Shawn retains World title at King of the Ring 1997 - Michaels/Austin defeat Owen/Bulldog for tag titles 1997 - Shawn wins European title from Bulldog at One Night Only I think the only time that Davey Boy was on the winning side was at International Incident in 1996 where he teamed with Vader and Owen to beat HBK/Sid/Ahmed, but that was more Vader over Michaels, than Bulldog over Michaels. Does anyone know if I've missed any win Davey Boy might have got over Michaels? That has to be just about the worst record any wrestler has against a single opponent, maybe only beaten by Savage/Hogan.

    Davey Boy Smith/Shawn Michaels

Thanks guys, I knew he had to pick up a win somewhere along the way. I also remembered he was part of Razor Ramons team at the 94 Survivor Series, where Razor was sole survivor after Shawn and his team all got counted out. I guess technically that counts as a win!

    How will HHH be remembered?

Survivor Series - HHH vs Gene Snitsky vs Kane for the World title. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest, but hopefully this feud is a bit too low brow for Trips to get in on. Back on topic of how he will be remembered - On the recent WM20 DVD they had a 10 greatest WM matches. If there is another WM retrospective in 30 years, produced by WWE, he will have at least 3 matches in the top 10 and one of them will be number one. (it wont be the WM20 3-way because he didn't win that) It's the same as everything else produced by WWE. Example - HHH won best match of 2001 because of the 2/3 falls match with Austin, which wasn't even close to being the match of the year (my personal pick would have been Austin/Angle at SS, or Rock/Jericho at No Mercy). From a smark (or at least my own) perspective, HHH will be remembered as a political genius, who weaseled his way into Stephs pants, and power. He was the man in 2000 while others were injured (Austin/Undertaker), retired (Foley) or making movies (Rock). After that year (and up until May 2001) there isn't much to like about him, the big pop in MSG was memorable, but he blew it in the months following with crap performances and the destruction of Y2J's credibility. He got embarrassed by Vince giving Hogan the title, and has been doing everything possible to keep that from happening again. He will be remembered more for his backstage power-plays than his in-ring qualities, which on occasion are still very good. Even if you look at him from a strictly in-ring viewpoint, you could shoot holes in any argument for greatness just by looking at his WM19 match with Booker T, where he made Booker look pathetic on the way to the inevitable victory.

    Worst ending to a PPV?

What is the worst ending to a PPV. Could be an anti-climax, a bad main event, or a dodgy angle. What are you personal 'most hated'? For me, I'm going with Summerslam 93. Maybe it's because I'm not American, so I could never really get into the Mr USA gimmick Lex Luger had going, but this ending was a massive letdown for me. All the hype, and he wins by count-out. And then celebrates (with half the roster) at winning, but not winning the title. Undertaker vs Underfaker from the following years SS, deserves a mention as well. From a storyline point of view, I guess it had to go on last, but I would have preferred the Bret/Owen cage classic to end the show, even with the post-match beatdown.

That's just what SD needs, another lame-duck champ. They now have JBL, CCC, Rene/Suzuki and Spike, with none of them ever picking up a clean win. Fantastic.

    Best near falls ever?

Dont know whether you technically count it as a near fall, but the Shawn Michaels 'only foot hit the ground' Royal Rumble in 95 was well executed. Bulldog threw him over, they took all focus off Shawn as Davey Boy went and posed while his music played, and then out of nowhere HBK knocks him over. Then they announce that only one of his feet hit touched. Confusing for an instant, but very imaginitive.

    Worst ending to a PPV?

Even when Hogan got beat it was bad - how about Uncensored 99 where Ric Flair beat him for the World title in a First Blood cage match. He won by PINFALL!

    Best near falls ever?

The Ultimate Warrior kicking out after 5 Randy Savage Big Elbows at WM7, and then Macho kicking out after the Warriors usual routine finish. Crowd reaction was incredible to both. Bret Hart kicking out of the Perfect-plex at SummerSlam 91.

    Favorite nonsensical turns

They "threw Triple H into the mix" because he didn't want to turn face and some would say he wanted to sabotage Austin's heel turn to keep his spot as the top heel in the company. Looking at everything that happened I wouldn't argue against that. Austin's heel turn *at* Wrestlemania had plenty of reasons behind it. I'm not 100% sure, but I thought the pre-quad tear plan was for HHH to turn face, after losing both his titles (IC and tag) in consecutive nights and Stone Cold/Vince thinking he was a weak link. The role reversal HHH/SC feud was then going to carry them through the summer months while Rock was away, but instead they had to rush the WCW angle.

Will Snitsky beat Kane at Taboo Tuesday?

Snitsky will win. He's over at the moment, and they will want to drag this thing out until at least Survivor Series to solidify a Kane face turn. Personally, I could see them turning Lita heel on Kane, and siding with Gene and helping him win. Don't ask me why she would, but it wouldn't surprise me if she did.

    The Old School questions thread

In 1991, how did Mr Perfect go from being managed by Booby Heenan (WM7) to being managed by Coach (SummerSlam 91)? And how was Perfect introduced as Ric Flairs Executive Consultant?

Demolition/Mr Fuji/Powers of Pain at Survivor Series 88. I remember I was massively confused at this one (I was only 11, I guess). I couldn't work out if Fuji had become a face (or 'good guy' in 11 year old speak), or if Demolition had. After the turn, they continued the match as normal with the POP getting the clean win, which made it even more confusing. Does anybody know if Fuji ever give an explanation as to why he turned on Demo?

Should the WWE bring back King of the Ring?

I think they should as long as it is treated as the centrepoint of the show, and not as some mid-card event. It should be structured like the 1993 event, which had a good mix of wrestlers including Bret Hart, Mr Perfect and Razor Ramon. The final should be the last match on the card, and all wrestlers should be put in it, not just mid-carders. Still have a World Title match if need be, but position it in the middle of the card.

    The Gene Snitsky love

I think him starting a thread and asking us all to stop loving Snitsky has actually done the opposite and made people like Gene Snitsky more.

    Triple H's Most Embarassing Loss...

I'd think that HHH's loss to Hogan at Backlash 2002 would be up there. After all that build, he held the belt for one month before Vince decided that a 50 year old was a better option as champ.

The OAO Raw is Snitsky in MSG Thread

This is correct, but then everyone thought the same thing in 1998/99 when it was obvious that Austin/Rock was the WM15 main event. It did headline Mania, but in the build up we got some great matches, and title changes, from Rock/Mankind. So, since Orton is being booked like Austin, next week on Raw - Y2J/HHH in a no-dq match. Evolution and Benoit/Benjamin get in a big brawl at ringside (like DX and the Corporation) and Stone Cold Randy Orton comes down, nails HHH with a chair and we get a brief Jericho title run!

Does anyone know what the point was of Shane McMahon signing Austin to a new contract (that included a title shot) so he could spite his dad, and then turning heel on Austin and joining Vince?
