Wrestlemania XXIV Discussion Thread
RavishingRickRudo replied to Diamonddust's topic in The WWE Folder
The first superkick was the best. He smoked Flair. The end came with Shawn standing in the corner, Flair trying hard to get up. It was like Shawn didn't want to look at Flair, he played it off so well. Flair got up, fist clenched, as if to say "bring it on", Shawn mouthed "I'm sorry, I love you" then pulled the trigger on on SCM for the KO win. Immediately after the 3 he went head to head with Flair, almost like he was embracing a recently dead loved one, then kissed him on the forehead and left. Flair came to with tears in his eyes, realizing what it all meant. -

Great match. Goosebumps for the ending. Well built, great story. Best possible way to end a career, very dignified. -

I know this isn't theory, but... Water Buffalo vs. Lions w/ a crocodile run-in. -
This is a wrestling board, it shouldn't be surprising that wrestling fans see wrestling as a priority. If this were a star trek board and Sulu offed a couple of people with an icepick, there'd probably be sympathy there for him too.

There is so much to the CBS deal that the best thing to do in this discourse is to watch it unfold. However, since we're all conjecturing, why not... The UFC, in its peak, drew something like 3.0 in ratings on SPIKE. Now, you say that CBS is not SPIKE, this is true, so the ratings ceiling is indeed higher. However, EXC is not UFC. They haven't built the following that UFC has. There is little to no goodwill developed by EXC. The crowds and numbers drawn by EXC isn't half of what UFC draws. And while the ratings ceiling is higher, the ratings expectation is indeed higher as well. CBS isn't exactly run by geniuses who know the ins and outs of fads and fighting. They want MMA to see what it will draw, due to the UFC's success with certain demographics, and they see EXC as being comparable to UFC. It isn't. And even if it were, even if they got 3 million people to watch, it's still not enough for CBS because they could put on pretty much anything in the timeslot to draw 3 million people. TV time is an opportunity cost/lost situation. They could say that Fedor is Jesus reborn and it won't get the general public interested in a guy who doesn't speak english and doesn't look like a fighter. They can't use any of his PRIDE footage, and with Tim Sylvia, they can't use any of his UFC footage, so what do you sell to the fans? Two guys with love handles facing off and looking mean? You won't draw interest just by saying it's important, you can't get people to care just by telling them to care. No matter how big the audience. The hardcores that Fedor would supposedly draw is the same hardcores that will be watching anyways. So that point is a lil absurd. But, if you HAMMER it... who am I to argue with hammering. And I seriously doubt CBS will put a lot of weight behind EXC. The return just won't be there. UFC's deal with AnBusch was such a bigger story because it's one that is making them money from advertisers. Who is going to advertise and sponsor EXC? Which, for CBS, is the main source of revenue coming from putting EXC on TV. So why would CBS pony up a ton of cash, free up a ton of ad space, for a show that could potentially end up being a net loss? For a show that is ultimately being done as a feasibility test? Sure, you can point to the stock acquisition as being a vested interest, but the basic fact that they can opt out of the agreement after any of the shows shows you how cautious they are about putting MMA on tv. Ultimately, I can't see EXC getting more than a 3.0, and I can't see CBS being happy with a 3.0. I personally don't think EXC will end up doing 2.0, and I know CBS won't be happy with that. -

There is a difference between losing key talent and "A LOT of people", which is was the basis of your original statement. Tito and Randy have a history of contract disputes, with Zuffa and others. Tim Sylvia states that he wants to fight for the UFC again in the future, and a number of mitigating factors surround his release, namely being Monte Cox and the fact that he would be a long ways away from a title shot in the UFC, having challenged and lost numerous title bouts. Then you have Shogun, Silva, Noguiera, Herring, Lesnar, Cro Cop, Rampage, Sokoudjou, Coleman ... all coming to deals with the impossible-to-deal-with, and notoriously cheap, Dana White. Then you had Vera and BJ who were on the outs with management, realigning their priorities and coming back to Zuffa to make it work. So, really, A LOT of people have been signing on with Zuffa. -

Well, there's Randy. That's two. I mean, shit, 2 whole people. Both of whom have a history of holding out (Randy even before Dana knew what the UFC was). Both of whom pretty much want a million dollars per fight. Shiiiiit. The ship's sinking fast, boys. I don't think Zuffa will survive this massive diaspora. -

Yes, the guy no one knows vs. the guy nobody likes, would be hyooge. You may want to list some of these names that the UFC is losing, considering all the guys they acquired in the past year. -

I can`t tell you how many times I called for a homerun and then bunted as a kid. Hell, pretty much everything I know about baseball comes from Major League, and dammit, it`s been too long for me to change now. -

Tim Sylvia leaving would be great. He has no marquee value and he can beat the crap out of every shitty heavyweight out there and destroy any chance of any other company having a marketable heavyweight division. Plus I won't have to watch him fight again. -

Necessary Roughness is Baculatastic. Plus it has Sinbad. I'd probably rank it in my top 10. But, like, high top ten. Definitely top 15. -
Shiiit, fuck that, Garcia can parlay this into street-cred and the world is his. The Kimbo of 145.

Wow, with the amount of times leather touched Bakers face, a fighter of greater punching power would have knocked his head off. That said, Sonnens late flurry would have been stopped by Herb Dean. But not by Steve Masochistti. -

The WEC commercials with simple text and the docu-style are fucking tremendous. There are some areas where WEC dwarf even UFC's production. -

WEC really needs to stop with the full on commercial breaks. 1 minute fight, 2 minute commercial, 2 minute recap, 2 minute commercial, 2 minute build, 1 minute fight, 2 minute commercial, 2 minute recap, 2 minute commercial... -

Koschecks stand up consists of him lobbing an overhand right and everything else is for show. Which opens up the possibility for Lytle to throw an overhand right and we can get a double ko. -
