UFC 94 - Georges St. Pierre vs. BJ Penn II

The GSP/BJ staredown, the whole time I'm audibly saying "oh shit! oh shit! oh shit! oh shit! oh shit! oh shit!". How can anyone hate Clay Guida? Serious. The dude is such a cool, energetic, positive guy. Probably gives clothes to the homeless, heals sick children, and goes to retirement homes just to let old people tell their story to someone who cares. How can anyone hate Clay Guida? Nate Diaz, still, HATES, Clay Guida.

No way GSP is looking past this fight. BJ is respected by pretty much every fighter out there. No one takes him lightly.

BTW, best analysis I've seen on this fight is from... Erin Toughill? Her's or Chris Lytles.. You also gotta love that this fight has gotten a lot more in-depth responses than most (or all) fights in the previous pros picks. This is definitely a fight fighters want to see as much as fans.

Also, this card is pretty swank. The main event has taken the spotlight away from Bonnar/Jones (which I am looking forward to), Guida vs. Diaz (which is awesome!), and Lyoto vs. Thiago (I like watching Lyoto fight, and it's always interesting to see how guys approach him.) Then there is Karo/Stun Gun, Tavares/Manny, and Gono/Fitch. Hopefully this won't make like other good-on-paper UFC cards and disappoint.

UFC 94 - Georges St. Pierre vs. BJ Penn II

Yeah, especially by round 3 when both guys are sweaty and BJ's tireder. It's rare to see anyone get a Rd3 submission, let alone anyone getting one on a top fighter like Georges. Penns bread and butter is his RNC. He'd have a better chance doing what he did to Matt Hughes and tapping St. Pierre that way.

I would definitely have Children of Men in my top 10. Syriana is definitely a movie to define our times. Both in terms of structure and subject matter. The "scattering" was by design and very effectively done (reflecting the true nature of it's subject). Tremendous score and cinematography, not to mention top performances from all involved (Christopher Plummer owns things). I find it rewarding to watch even now, picking up things I hadn't noticed before. The third time I saw it was when it moved from an awesome movie to oneat the top of my all time list. Perhaps it's cause I like the topic matter, but I heart this movie. I might put Bourne up there as well, for top of the oughts. Departed too.

UFC 94 - Georges St. Pierre vs. BJ Penn II

Well, ANYONE could do it. But look at the percentages. How many fights has GSP been in where he has been rocked? Where and how did he get hit? Has he done anything to correct his error? Then look at BJ and see how many times he has failed to KO opponents who are much worse than Georges. And, of course, look to their own fight where Penn failed to KO Georges despite GSP being unable to see very well for the entire round. Very low percentage chance of a KO happening. Odds are way closer to this going to a decision. It seems like GSP's chin* is going to dog him like BJ's cardio. (*Loose meaning of the term)

UFC 94 - Georges St. Pierre vs. BJ Penn II

I don't really see GSP knocking out or submitting Penn, but I can see Penn doing both to GSP. If GSP wins, it's in a Hughes-esque beatdown situation for the TKO. Though, to be completely honest, I have no idea where I get notion that Penn can KO Rush. Penn has only knocked out guys who are much smaller than GSP (Din, Sherk, Uno) and even then he hasn't KO'd a ton of people. Not to mention Penn had GSP blind in one eye and though he did a lot of facial damage, he didn't have Georges rocked or anything.

    LOST

Maybe he has someone tailing Desmond? Or he has knowledge about Desmond from Faraday's experiments? Something that has him believing Desmond will help him find the island, at least. There could be something in the past that he remembers and sees this as it all coming 'round again.

Syriana was in 2005. Best movie of the 00's.

    LOST

Finished the first three episodes today, freakin great. The time travel stuff is fun, but seriously folks, when you start using "Old Future Locke", you gotta take a step back and just let it unfold. I'll echo the sentiment that the new losties (Miles, Faraday, Richard) are better than the old losties (Jack, Kate). So much less whiney and teary eyed. I thought the scene in the church with Ben was kinda lame. The Widmore reveal on the island was rad, though.

    Helio Gracie has passed away

Truly a figure that we can say "If we didn't have him, we wouldn't have this". Seeing him roll in his nineties is a fucked up thing. Can't say that I feel sad, though, dude built a system of fighting, built a family and a name, and then lived to see it become world renown. Fuck, just thinking about it, is there anyone on the planet with close to the amount of experience Helio had in BJJ? So much knowledge.

UFC 94 - Georges St. Pierre vs. BJ Penn II

That sorta fits in with "who is better". Each guy has different gifts, skills, advantages, over the other guy. Who is able to implement their abilities and neutralize their opponents'. Being big means nothing if you can't use it. Being flexible, being fast, punching hard, taking a punch... etc. Each guy knows what the other brings, who can bring something different, who can deal with what they know and don't know, who fucking knows. That's why this fight is insanely good. Despite the fact the GSP won the first time, that Penn gassed, that Rush's face looked like a horror scene... this is an entirely new fight with new fighters in it. I honestly don't think I'll see a fight like this again for a while.

UFC 94 - Georges St. Pierre vs. BJ Penn II

BJ has looked like a monster in his past few fights, and he has done so by doing the same thing he's doing now. I've seen his training footage in the past and it's fucked. They just stand there and take turns beating the shit out of each other. Training won't be the issue. Cardio and conditioning won't be the issue. Straight up, this fight is about who is better.

That's about half of our politicians right there, so you'd have to narrow it down. And HSJ, if you come to class with some for yourself, you should bring some for everybody.

I prefered mama penns "hello, son, this is your mother calling you on the telephone inviting you to a nice family dinner" moment. Kinda screamed staged.

UFC 94 - Georges St. Pierre vs. BJ Penn II

Oh fuck. The intro of the training partners is quite possibly the coolest shit the UFC has ever done. Closely rivaled by BJ running with big ass glasses, and boxing in slow mo. Have I mentioned how awesome this show is? Really makes everything else the UFC does look like crap.
