It made 55 million, I think that 15,000 was a per screen avg. Considering 300 made 70 million this has to be a bit of a disappointment, but Watchmen is a lot longer than 300. They better hope this has some serious legs, but the word of mouth is likely going to be seriously mixed.

Impact spoilers for Feb. 26 and March 5, 2009
cabbageboy replied to Hunter's Torn Quad's topic in TNA Wrestling
West's heel rant on Tenay this week was hysterical. I watched it on DVR about 3 times. "I just can't... look at your face!" Right now TNA is some sort of deranged guilty pleasure. I now look forward to it each week just to see how utterly horrid it will be. It's certainly more absurd fun than the dreary, serious dreck that is Raw these days. -
Were those fans on Nitro real fans or were they plants? I vaguely recall some Observer tidbit on another thread saying WCW had planted fans rush the ring. That seems incredibly irresponsible to me.

Yes! U of L barely survives at WVU and now the Cards are the outright Big East champs. Thanks, Pitt. Terrence Williams took a few years off my life there at the end with those missed FTs though, I was practically yelling for someone to foul WVU to prevent a 3 point attempt. This is great though, now U of L gets to avoid Pitt and UConn until a potential BE tourney final. Oh, and Morehead actually won the OVC tonight, beating Austin Peay in double OT. That's just....awesome.

One thing to note about Nixon....anyone else feel that the makeup was a deliberate grotesque caricature? I didn't crack up at it since it felt like a bizarre piece of business intentionally done. Of course I didn't see it in IMAX either, haha. Overall I'd give it ***.

Let's Talk About...Roddy Piper's WCW stint
cabbageboy replied to King Kamala's topic in General Wrestling
I'm baffled as to why anyone would have bought Piper and those guys vs. the NWO on a PPV. I will say this for Piper though. He and Hogan drew a ton of money in the 80s in their heel/face roles, but then drew another ton of money a decade later switching the roles. I like some of Piper's work, but largely find him overrated. The guy had maybe two matches that were really excellent stuff (vs. Valentine at the first Starrcade and vs. Bret at WM 8). Too many of his matches are of the DQ or countout variety for my taste. -
Edge/Orton is a curious idea for a match. It would be a better match than either Edge/Show/Cena or HHH/Orton would be, but it's also a total anti draw with two heels. There was no real contract stip that Orton and HHH couldn't touch each other, it was largely just Orton wanting that. Obviously since he attacked HHH on this show he was just luring HHH into a false sense of security. Regarding Cena...could they be booking any more in neutral with him right now? Can they please do something besides a 3 way at WM? Why not have a #1 contender's match with Show/Cena, winner gets Edge? Oh, wait. They actually DID that match last week and Big Show won. So what exactly is Cena's basis for throwing himself into this title scene? He lost the title in the EC cleanly, he lost to Big Show last week, then got a title shot and came up short. Edge was perfectly right to be pissed at Vickie and wanting Cena to go away.

Right now anyone in the Main Event Mafia would qualify as a heel that is right. Guys like Booker and Steiner being attacked by guys like Styles and Joe, who come off exactly like the out of control young punks that the MEM say they are.

Let's Talk About...Roddy Piper's WCW stint
cabbageboy replied to King Kamala's topic in General Wrestling
Dusty perhaps had more sense than the actual bookers of that match, figuring that a main event of a PPV should be for the title. Piper's WCW run started really well, with him coming in to challenge Hogan and the NWO beating him down a lot. The TV building to that Starrcade match was tremendous stuff actually, but Piper went awry a bit after that point. The whole SuperBrawl Alcatraz angle was goofy and his promos after that became more and more of the "crazy old guy" deal. -

cabbageboy replied to Hunter's Torn Quad's topic in TNA Wrestling
That's great. Now the question is this: Should I go to the house show next Friday at some convention center in Shepherdsville (which is a bit outside Louisville)? The main will be Joe vs. Angle, so maybe I should go root for the psychotic Olympic champ who hates almost everyone to beat down the near murderous Samoan. -

cabbageboy replied to Hunter's Torn Quad's topic in TNA Wrestling
I was going to post that the whole medley of Booker/Styles/Steiner/Joe/West/Tenay/Angle was the weirdest, funniest shit I've seen in forever on a wrestling show. Jingus, you are of course correct in trashing it but why is it I enjoyed that 20 minutes or so for how bad it was? Let us take inventory: --Booker cut a reasonable promo simply wanting his belt back. Later we're told Cornette is forcing Booker to face Styles for the belt even though it is NOT a legit belt and in theory the TNA office should have no say. --Styles once again sneak attacks Booker (and Steiner), but now is arrested by the Riot Gear goofs (did Booker borrow them from Heyman?). --Of course being an angle of this sort, one of the gear guys is Samoa Joe in disguise...he takes off the helmet and attacks Steiner yet again, revealing his 100% jobberific face paint. And he pulls a Samoan tribal knife on Steiner, threatening to kill him on national TV. At this point I don't mind saying I was almost falling on the floor from laughing. --Joe seems like the only guy in wrestling that gets buried by beating someone else down. That's hard to do. --So we go to commercial and come back to find Tenay defending Joe for his wildy illegal actions, with West flipping out and walking away. Bear in mind we're supposed to think TENAY is the face in this angle, regardless of him defending a guy for pulling a knife on someone. West is of course completely right about this. --Then just for the hell of it, Angle beats the piss out of Jay Lethal and takes back his suit or something. Just a burial for the sake of it. -
After reading her review she made me want to see the movie all the more, so it had the exact opposite effect of what she intended. Something that should be borderline NC-17 featuring graphic violence, sex, war atrocities, and anti heroes? Sign me up! You know what's odd? I don't recall Sin City attracting anywhere near this kind of controversy when it came out. But then that film was more of a niche cult item and Watchmen is in theory a blockbuster. Either way there's nothing in the Watchmen book that is as twisted as the part in Robocop where the one lackey villain crashes into the vat of toxic waste. Hmm...Robocop. Now there was a hard R rated movie that was in fact marketed towards kids, along with 80s flicks like Rambo II and Commando. Those movies had toys that you could buy from K-Mart, Target, etc.

What will be the worst movie of 2009?
cabbageboy replied to Obi Chris Kenobi's topic in Television & Film
Okay having watched that series of clips....that wasn't so bad. It was more of a guy that just sucks rather than something I laughed out loud watching. It would be like if Jason Lee tried to play a bad ass in a movie. -
I think the Colts need to consider bringing Owens in. They just released Marvin Harrison and could certainly use him. Put him with Reggie Wayne and it could be interesting. This isn't a situation like Philly where McNabb is iffy with the team and management, so Owens could pull a bunch of crap. Or like Dallas with a dubious Romo. If he talks a bunch of crap about Manning the Colts could just cut him in a heartbeat. The Patriots should consider it as well. Brady throwing to Moss, Owens, and Welker? Good grief.

I think Sarver will last longer than others here. He's an okay singer, nothing amazing, but there are reasons he can advance: --He's a redneck oil rig worker and that will get him the rural votes. --He seems like the only verifiable heterosexual in this group of guys.

U of L took care of the pesky Seton Hall tonight to avenge a hideous loss from last year. I do like the improved offense since that ND game. Now it's WVU on the road Saturday for the league title, at least a share of it pending UConn/Pitt and possibly the outright league title. UK lost to Georgia tonight. Say hello to the NIT, Cats fans!

This Matt/Jeff stuff is a waste of Jeff Hardy at WM if that is where they are going. Given that Matt jobbed clean to MVP it's not like they are even trying to make some pretense of pushing him as a heel. This can't just be a singles match at WM. Why not have Jeff wrestle Matt in the opener and then get a title shot at the end of the show vs. the Edge/Cena/Show winner? It strengthens a mediocre title scene as well as spices up an undercard feud.

The 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania Thread
cabbageboy replied to DrVenkman PhD's topic in The WWE Folder
The IC title was killed to some degree during the Katie Vick period where the title was unified with the world title. I don't even think that it's even been defended on a WM at all since it returned in 2003. -
The thing that cracked me up is after the whole Vampiro/Demon deal went down Vampiro came back to the arena and then a coffin and various Sting wannabes were in the ring. Sting popped out and attacked Vampiro, with bandages on his head (selling the Human Torch match). Keep in mind this deranged Undertaker style segment happened right after the whole Russo deal. Quite the juxtaposition of crazy crap.

Is this Hogan/Cena thing a serious rumor or just BS? I don't see the point in it really, since Hogan is way older than he was when he faced The Rock at WM so his rub would be lessened. Just put Cena in there with Edge/Show, since there's no way that match has any main event heat. Even with Cena it doesn't have much heat, but more than it would without him in it. No idea what to think of HHH's rant on Orton tonight. HHH almost cloudied the issue by bringing up all that past history and what a douche he was back then. In order for this match to draw at all we shouldn't be reminded of what a tool Orton was when he was tossed from Evolution, since it only reinforces the notion that this is a stale match.

Okay Bob might get pissed at me for saying this, but why in the hell is Memphis getting first place votes in the coaches poll? Seriously, UConn has 27 this week and Memphis actually got 4. For doing what exactly? Beating the mighty UAB? Here's that entire poll: Coaches Poll (March 2): 1. Connecticut (27) 27-2 769 2 2. North Carolina 25-3 711 5 3. Memphis (4) 26-3 698 4 4. Pittsburgh 26-3 667 1 5. Oklahoma 26-3 653 3 6. Louisville 23-5 630 6 7. Duke 24-5 597 7 8. Michigan State 23-5 557 9 9. Kansas 24-5 509 15 10. Wake Forest 22-5 480 14 11. LSU 25-4 420 18 12. Having seen the new Friday the 13th it was mostly a typical entry though it was nice to actually have a competent male protagonist in a slasher flick. As in not Steven Seagal or anything but a dude who can hold his own in a fight. The biggest baffling moments to me involved Jason suddenly having all sorts of cunning and skills:

TMC What If: Jim Crockett broke away from the NWA?
cabbageboy replied to TMC1982's topic in General Wrestling
Precisely. I don't see what leaving the NWA would have done for Crockett either way since Crockett WAS the NWA in the mind of the public. Crockett did spend a ton of money buying up all the regional NWA territories though and that was a mistake. It was a Catch 22 position to be in, since Crockett couldn't blatantly screw over fellow NWA promoters (being the president of the NWA) but he was still trapped in a regional Carolinas mindset. Seemingly every promoter other than Vince was stuck in that mindset, but the difference is that Vince started out with the huge advantage of having NYC, Boston, and Philly all under his thumb. -
Michaels/Kozlov flat out has to be Shawn putting him away with the Sweet Chin Music. No small package for a 3 count with Vlad attacking him after the bell to prolong this. No DQ finish. Just give HBK the strong win and let's build to the Taker feud.
