ALCS: Detroit Tigers vs. Oakland A's

If Big Hurt gets into one, I think Jones loses his job as closer.
  2. A small plane (previously reported as a helicopter) hit a building on 72nd St & York Avenue in Manhattan, and of course the news media and cops are all over it like it was a terrorist attack even though right now it's being ruled an accident. The "eyewitnesses" don't really strike me as 100% credible. I really hope this doesn't become another city crippling event with police presence slowing everything to a halt. EDIT: According to CNN, NORAD has decided to launch fighter planes to do patrols over several US cities. This is retarded.

Cory Lidle dies in plane crash

That was the one. I thought it was on Monday though. Not that it really matters at this point since that's what everyone will remember.

Mike & The Mad Dog just said that ESPNews reported that Cory Lidle died in the plane crash in Manhattan I referenced in another thread.

    Ultimate Fight Night VII

That was a quick stoppage, but 'The Exorcist' wasn't exactly worthy of continuing considering he wasn't doing anything but turtling up there.

    Ultimate Fight Night VII

Jason McDonald def. Ed Herman via tap out at 2:40ish. At one point he had Ed in a triangle, a kimura AND busted him open with some elbows to the skull. Ed fought for as long as he could but eventually had to submit. That was awesome.

Enough with the catfight. Both Torre and Cox have gagged in the postseason more than enough times.

    2006 TSM Baseball Award Results

I wasn't saying that the idea is ridiculous, I'm just saying that I've heard voters flip flop on what they'll vote for when it's convenient. There were guys who voted both Sasaki and Suzuki # 1 in ROY balloting who felt it was wrong to vote Matsui # 1 because he played in Japan. Just like they won't count Ichiro's Japanese hit total with his MLB hit total when he retires, you shouldn't count someone's Japanese games played against his MLB rookie status.

Just read it as letters. It's an anagram for an expression and since it looks like gibberish I can pretty much guarantee it will be an available screen name on any board I visit. Does anyone happen to know what the actual MLB Award schedule looks like this year?

I think $12 million is a lot more than Hunter's worth for a year, but the Twins couldn't really afford to lose him.

    2006 TSM Baseball Award Results

In the last 6 years the AL ROY has gone to a 32 year old pitcher with 10 years as a pro in Japan, and a 27 year old hitter with 9 years as a pro in Japan. On top of that, Matsui should have won the year Berroa did. This ridiculous argument that Japanese baseball should count against your MLB rookie status only when it's convenient makes no sense.

A-Rod playing at home would be just as bad as playing in NY.

According to what I'm hearing on Mike & The Mad Dog Clueless Joe will NOT get the axe. I'm curious if that means Cashman gets run out of town or if George will not fire anyone.

    NFL Week 5

The Saints are 4-1 not 3-2 but I don't think they'd move up more than a spot anyway, as the only team you have ahead of them that could probably be lower would be the Vikes. I don't know about the Ravens and Broncos being ahead of Indy & SD but there's nothing there that stands out as terrible. Even though Baltimore beat San Diego, I'd probably go Chicago, SD, Philly, Indy, Pats as the top 5 and realistically 2 through 16 are pretty interchangeable right now because every team besides Chicago has a glaring weakness whether it be on defense, offense or not having a quality win yet.

This is totally irrelevant to the conversation, but what happened to Aaron Small this past season? The guy was the ace down the stretch last year and I don't even remember seeing him pitch in 2006. Given how much Jaret Wright sucked, what did he do to get himself out of the mix?

    2006-07 MLB Offseason Thread

But due to the money that is kicked in by the Rangers, A-Rod is only owed $64 million over 4 years, for an AAV of $16 million. That's less than Barry Zito, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Alfonso Soriano will likely get on this year's FA market. If you consider teams that have enough payroll coming off the books this winter or have the capacity to absorb that deal, and have a hole at 3B or SS, you get something like the following: Seattle, LA Angels, Chicago White Sox, Boston, Toronto, Baltimore, LA Dodgers, San Diego, San Francisco, Houston, Philadelphia, Chicago Cubs and Washington. That makes a decent market if you ask me. True, but the key is all of those teams know the Yankees are more concerned with dumping A-Rod than trading him for equal value. If he'd had a decent postseason, I think he could have commanded a much greater trade value. Giving up a big prospect and/or 2 starters and then still having to pay A-Rod $16 million per is far too much for what he brings in return, even to a contender. Let's keep in mind that $16 million might be chump change for 4 or 5 teams in the league, but one of those teams is the one he's on, another is across the way and can't use him unless he'd play 2nd, so it'll be interesting to see what happens.

Teams won't be giving up major talent for A-Rod unless the Yankees end up eating 75% of what he's owed for the next 3 years. Trading a team cancer/albatross of a contract usually doesn't get you equal value since everyone knows you're trying to get RID of the player in question. Just look at what the Phillies got in the Bobby Abreu trade.

$12 million/yr is a "cheap replacement"? Must be fun to play baseball with monopoly money.
