The Arcade Fire live experience is overhyped in no way whatsoever. My only complaint is that they did not play for long enough.
-
Agreed on both accounts.

Definitely agree with "Train in Vain." Pixies -- "Havalina" You know, a guilty pleasure of mine is actually the Pixies ending Trompe Le Monde with "The Navajo Know" (probably misspelled that, eh.) It's really sort of mostly just a non-distinct song for the Pixies that I didn't enjoy at first, but after a while it sort of stuck to me. Modest Mouse's middle-two albums end wonderfully. "The Trial," while not actually the last song on The Wall, is an excellent finale of sorts. Let's see... Eskimo ends well... Marquee Moon... Horses... White Light/White Heat... The Velvet Underground... Piper at the Gates of Dawn... The list really goes on and on, but I'd say that my ultimate choice as of right now (since I just got tickets for them yesterday and am in the mood) would have to be the end all of end all ending tracks. Slint -- "Good Morning Captain"

I have some live mp3s of them, circa '89. Sound quality is kinda poor, but, from what I can tell, they sound like they do on record. Well, that's good enough for me. Tickets purchased. Let's hope they don't dissapoint.
-
I had tickets to see Wilco, but well... that fell through. Anyway, Modest Mouse, Slint, and the Arcade Fire, hopefully. I was thinking of buying Slint tickets today, as I love them and everything... but it occurred to me that I had never heard ANYTHING about their live show. Are they even any good? Anyway, I'll probably buy the tickets tonight either way.

Duran Duran is all you need.

About four of the five Pavement albums open up with what ends up being in the top three songs on the album. They were good at that. And then there's... Pixies -- "Cecilia Ann" Wilco -- "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart" Husker Du -- "Something I Learned Today" Pink Floyd -- "Astronomy Domine" (actually most of their albums started out phenominally) Devo -- "Uncontrollable Urge" And -- oh, dammit -- I had a REALLY good one. I'll post it when it comes back to me. EDIT: Oh, right "This is the Way" by Joy Division.

So I was at open mic night last night at my local coffee shop and these two Asian guys played an excellent, EXCELLENT acoustic version of "Bulletproof." That's really all I have to say.

Recommend each other some Pink Floyd.

I'm a huge Floyd fan, but man, is The Wall overrated or what. Doesn't even make the top five or six albums, in my opinion. Barrett's solo stuff isn't for everyone, but I adore it as well... but I Must admit, I haven't heard a single Waters solo song. So -- Brunzell seems like he might know this -- is any of Waters' solo stuff worth checking out? I'd assume that it'd be a "If you liked The Final Cut you'll like this" thing, but yeah, should I pick up an album, or what? -
I think that Prince is the very definition of a totally NOT average artist. Every single thing about him is above average. As for Interpol, I'm still not sold. I'll pick up the new album. Anyway... another one is Jay-Z. I don't know. I get into most other rap just fine post-too-cool-for-pop-and-rap-phase, but him I cannot get myself excited about. At all. Of course, I'm judging off of two albums, but still. They were both pretty hyped up for me, and then I just found myself thinking "...bleh" throughout the whole thing. Some highlights, nothing too offensive, but still, isn't that the very definition of "average"?

Zen Arcade is the best, yes. EDIT: Oh, right, and new CD's. I went to pick up The Life Aquatic OST from Circuit City last night -- they didn't have it, so I looked to expand on my Brian Eno collection. Nothing. Echo and the Bunnymen. Nothing. Scott Walker. Nothing. Memphis Jug Band. Nothing. FRANK MOTHERFUCKING ZAPPA. NOTHING. Le sigh. Well, I ended up buying Blueberry Boat. Overhyped, but some spectacular moments nonetheless. Not a waste, at least. But nonetheless, I have gotten something like three CD's in the last three weeks, which is downright scary seeing as how that includes the Christmas season. This calls for a Virgin Megastore trip or something. Or Tower or Ameoba or virtually anything that's not Circuit City. Guh.

There's a few alright ones out there. The tribute to the Pixies has one or two interesting covers... and tributes like the Ramones one where there's plenty of known artists ae always fun to listen to now and again, but for the most part, they're pretty shitty. Oh, but one worth picking up -- I'm Your Fan: A Tribute to Leonard Cohen Oh, and the Hedwig and the Angry Inch thing with a bunch of indie artists on it has some really good tunes too.

Paul McCartney's solo career is very "I can listen to this, but do I want to?" A lot of Frank Black's solo stuff is pretty "alright" too. Actually, come to think of it, pretty much... like, 75% of solo careers turn out being bland after an album or two, if that. Anyone from Lou Reed to Joe Strummer, really. Anyway, outside of that... I definitely agree in thinking that the Who are badass and everything, but I just never really want to listen to them outside of LaL. Same with AC/DC, Skynyrd, the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and a few other classic rockers. Also, a lot of new bands that are "good but only good because a lot of stuff these days is so bad" are pretty average when it comes down to it. The Strokes and whatnot. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, whatever. Even Interpol is really sort of average when you put them next to other stuff. I mean, I like their first album a lot, but I STILL have not been motivated enough to go out and purchase their second. And finally... well, I hate to say this... but Patti Smith[/i] is pretty average too. She's an awesome person, and Horses is probably in my top fifteen albums ever, but after that, Easter is good, and the one after that is pretty good too, but then we go into sort of a downhill thing which results in about five completely average albums in a row. Even Trampin', her first non-average album in forever, is pretty bland a lot of the time. Oh, yeah, and Nirvana. And Weezer too. And a lot of Smashing Pumpkins stuff. Alright, I'll stop.

Well, OK then. I probably wouldn't like Talk Talk then, if they're worse than Journey.
-
Stop listening to the Journey and tell me how the Talk Talk is. Everyone keeps saying "Talk Talk Talk Talk Talk Talk!" and I've just been afraid to listen to them simply because I really have no idea what they're about and they never seem to have that one album that everyone raves about in stock, but this is the final straw. If you give it a thumbs up as well, I might just give in. Anyway, uhm, I got that new Miles Davis Electric DVD, and the new live Primus DVD, which are both fantastic... and then Nick Drake's first album, which is also fantastic... and then the Joanna Newsome album, which I haven't listened to yet because I JUST FOUND MY OLD NEW RADICALS CD!!!!! And it's so bad, but I'm LISTENING TO IT NON-STOP ANYWAY!!!!!

It's OK to enjoy non-indie bands that don't completely and utterly suck, is a better way of putting it, Inc. Also, I would expect both redbaron AND Kibsy to already own that Kyuss album. *I* own it, and when it comes to a lot of metal I usually catch on about two decades after everyone else does.
-
It would be damn near impossible to put my hatred for Journey into words. ::shudders:: And to think that I once trusted you two.
-
So... for you Can fans... I finally got the first album. It's very, very, very good. But I'm wondering -- HOW exactly did Mooney have a breakdown (onstage, apparently)? Like, what happened? What'd he do? Anyway, yes, I'm going in chronilogical order from here. And here's one to research -- how many officially released studio albums (NO live albums or compilations) did Zappa actually release?
-
"Come As You Are" Unplugged pretty much sucked a dick. Oh. I forgot about that. It's not bad, really... but I don't know if the studio version is better. I was never really a fan of the song in the first place.
-
Seen them three times. GREAT twice, just OK the other time. But yes, hopefully you get to witness an extended jam on "Gigantic" or "No. 13 Baby." Or any of the modified versions. By the way, if they DO decide to record a fifth album, it won't be up to par, but Frank said he was going to try and get Tom Waits to produce it. How intense is THAT.
-
Much like many other people here, apparently... I really think the band churned out some really fucking good songs, but just because of the production and the aura of the albums, I like pretty much every song better when played during Unplugged. EVERY ONE. And all of the covers are good, too, especially the Vaselines (I like the Vaselines version better though, as it has a much warmer feel to it.) Anyway, why has no one mentioned Incesticide yet? Anyway, yes, I like In Utero and Unplugged A LOT, and the rest is just "alright," for the most part. Overexposure has definitely killed a lot of the Nirvana love for me. Oh, and Alice in Chains sucks. But yeah, their unplugged set was good.

So I finally sign on EXTRA early to make sure that I mark on time this time around... and I'm not marking. Grrr. Well, good luck to everyone anyway. Grrr. -
...Aren't you a little old for her?

Yeah, Sparta is totally unoriginal. I had to sit through their set at Coachella. Terrible, terrible stuff.
