I've been busy since Monday-ish and haven't had a chance to get online for more than maybe five minutes, and even now I'm in a rush... got three huge tests on Friday and I just haven't had a spare moment. But Andrew, when I get a chance, definitely within the next two or three days, I'll give your episode suggestions an in-depth look and we'll finally get down to the episode-copying, eh? I've decided on a few episodes, but want to give everything a pretty detailed overview before I choose, so... meh, yeah. But hey, who exactly were most of the characters during the Joel area? I mean TV's Frank and whatnot, that is.

Yep. Unless you're really a hardcore fan (which I'm pretty sure you're not), the Complete Greatest Hits set that runs for about $13 or $14 will be everything you need. Especially considering that I believe 6 tracks off the first album are on there. Ah, really? Well then, I'll definitely pick that up. I DID really like the cover to the self-titled album for some reason though... I dunno, it just sort of drew me in. But if the Best Of's got half of the tracks and most of anything else good the band did, then I'm in.

Picked out Slanted and Enchanted by Pavement and Trompe Le Monde by the Pixies this weekend, and they're still both really great albums. Of course, I was buying them for the second time over, since they were included in a batch of 21 CD's that I had stolen from me quite some time ago. Was quite tempted to pick up The Cars, but for them I think that the Greatest Hits would treat me better. Also wanted to finally get my hands on the Kill Bill soundtrack, but it was something absurd like $20-ish. Ah well, maybe next weekend.

I love pop culture references and the like, but I've mostly only seen Mike episodes, and those always worked for me... I'm sure Joel would too though, really. I saw a DVD of the Brain that Wouldn't Die episode the other day and am gonna go pick it up later in the week probably, but aside from that... I dunno. I suppose I'll just trust you: If you'd compile a sort of "Best of" of reasonable length/episode amountage that spanned both the Mike/Joel eras, then I'd buy it for pretty much any reasonable price that you named. So yeah, when that free day of yours comes up, if we can decide on a solid list of episodes, I'd like you to copy some for me, and just name a price. Shouldn't be too complicated, as long as I get my MST3K fix. I NEED Neptune Men, dammit! Anyhow, PM me about it or something, or direct me to the Tape Trading boards, and hopefully we can work out a good list of episodes and a solid price for this, and we'll be on our way, hopefully.

However, as for "The Brain..." itself--huh? That movie is really sleazy and misogynistic as far as I'm concerned. A guy cruising around town looking for strippers and models and other unsuspecting young girls, trying to find the right one to decapitate...sleazy music playing the whole while. Probably I'm not looking at the things you're talking about, but there are so many other movies on the show that could have actually been done right. Eh, agreed on most of the points, I just thought bits and pieces of it could be reused somewhere to a better effect. Kind of thought the movie starting out with the soundclip of "Please... let me die." was neato, even semi-haunting, and at least the guy's second-in-command-sidekick was given some backstory. That said, it'd probably be a lot better with two robots and a stoner (or was it in the Mike era?) ripping on it the entire time. And the other one I was thinking of was Invasion of the Neptune Men... I just remember a lot of laugh-out-loud moments in that, like where the kids notice the GIGANTIC building-sized spaceship in the middle of a field and Mike's like "Oh, well I can see how they missed that." Anyway... yeah, getting these on tape sounds quite awesome, but since I haven't seen too many episodes, I'd have to leave the picking to you. I'd want two or three specific ones, and at least a few to represent each season... but as for which ones and how many, that really depends on what you think are the best and how many episodes you're willing to copy. But yeah, any real stand-outs, in your opinion, that you think Angelslayer failed to mention?
-
Is it on at the same time no matter what time zone you're in? Oh darn. I should look up some of the nominations and see if anything interests me... I think the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were nominated for something, and while I'm not a HUGE thing, that could always be a cool underdog moment... hell, seeing anyone who's not Justin Timberleke win something is always enjoyable.
-
Wait... fuck, when is this on, and on what channel? I'm usually against these types of things, but Prince and this Beatles thing interest me, and maybe there'll be one or two surprise award-winners that will make me happy. Who's preforming, though?
-
Yeesh Angelslayer, if you were to copy a bunch of your episodes onto blank tapes as a sort of "Best Of," I'd buy them from you in a second. And I'm serious, too, if you'd have any interest in this you should PM me or something. I was always a big fan of the show when it came on, but I only discovered it in the rerun days. Always liked Squirm and the old Japanese movie where a superhero comes to save a bunch of kids from spacemen, mostly because those were amongst the first I saw. On a related note, this week I bought the actual DVD's for Plan 9 From Outer Space, The Robot Monster, The Brain That Wouldn't Die, and I think two or three other old B movies since they were all on sale for something absurd like $20 for all of them... and I must say, The Brain That Wouldn't Die, while you can tell it's a B-Movie, sure did have some ideas and style effects that could be recycled into good movies. But, yeah... seeing the show go is a shame, and I'll have to find some way to get some of the better episodes on VHS or DVD or something. Eh.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Kraftwerk are playing as well. I dunno, I've seen about 900 different "official" line-ups for the show so far, but apparently the OFFICIAL official lineup will be on the official site next week, officially. So that's exciting, and stuff. I live about two hours away, and I'd go just for the Pixies... it's a good thing that there's a fuckload of other awesome bands playing too.

That'd be pretty badass if I was in Scotland.

But DO YOU HAVE Bad Hair Day!? I thought not. -
Hrm... I just put the four main albums on there, as I assumed no one would vote for Squeeze, but if anyone likes any of the live albums or rarity compilations the best, then feel free to choose other. As for my choice, if you asked me 5 out of 7 days of the week, I'd say the debut, but right now I'm on a HUGE White Light/White Heat binge, with nonstop "Sister Ray" and "Lady Godiva's Operation" frenzies for the past week or so. I could just pick the debut anyway, but something tells me that that'll be getting its fair share of votes anyway, so I'll vote for the underdog today. Besides, the band itself has said many a-time that White Light/White Heat was the purest form of their sound, and the epitome of what they were trying to accomplish and whatnot. But they're all five-star albums, so this should end up being relatively even. So... one of the best and most influental bands of all time... what's your favorite album, and why? Any thoughts on the band would be welcomed with open arms as well, and I'm just interested in seeing how this turns out, so happy voting! EDIT: Sorry about the 's and the like... didn't know that italicizing stuff didn't work in polls. Eh.

I saw David Bowie last night. It was the most phenominal thing ever. I just couldn't stop smiling until maybe five songs into the set, and he played some Velvet Underground and Pixies tunes too... Jesus is he the man. Anyhow, I'm very interested in how all of those acts unfolded... mind giving a little description of each? I'd love to see the Stones, am seeing the Cure in May, and haven't heard anyone's first-hand account of how the Sex Pistols reunion went.

Hrm, same exact thing happened to me actually. And to whoever said that they have Weird Al's box set... well, I've got that, the first album, and the three albums made since the box set came out. WEIRD AL 4 LYFE~! -
A review: "Long before the so-so Velvet Underground reunions took place in the 1990s, a near-reunion of the most distinctive individuals took place at the Bataclan Club in Paris on January 29, 1972. At this low-key date, Lou Reed, John Cale, and Nico performed unplugged-type sets, with Reed and Cale providing instrumental and vocal backup throughout. On this 65-minute document of the event, Reed and Nico each take lead vocals on five songs, and Cale on three, the material drawn from both the Velvet Underground's early albums and the trio's early solo efforts. This is not a novel curiosity, of interest only to obsessive fans; it's strong, powerful stuff that in some respects outdoes the familiar versions, at least from their official solo records. Reed mixes songs from the Velvets' first album (nonchalantly introducing "Waiting for the Man" thusly: "This is a song about copping drugs in New York"), shining particularly on a stark cabaret version of "Berlin," which he refers to as "my Barbra Streisand song." Nico never sang better than she did on her portion, particularly on the bare interpretations of the Velvets' "Femme Fatale" and "I'll Be Your Mirror"; she also does a few tunes from her first two solo albums. The Cale-sung tracks are the least impressive, but still worthwhile, particularly "Ghost Story." This made the rounds as a hissy, lo-fi tape for years, but the sound on the CD bootleg is excellent, almost up to the standards of official release. In fact, it's well worth an above-board reissue, assuming that legalities were not a hurdle, and that Mr. Reed and Mr. Cale would not obstruct it. — Richie Unterberger" I guess I should check Amazon or something for it, as it sounds pretty badass.

Danny -- if you quit, I will kill you, and take away all your Gang of Four records. And then where will you be? AND THEN WHERE WILL YOU BE!? ...Ahem, congrats to everyone else. Hopefully by Thursday I will have time out of my hectic schedule (sleep) so that I can read the 'Fuck and hit the winner up with some in-depth comments. Until then... I just saw David Bowie in concert oh God I'm so tired and happy goodnight.

If you start listening to your Dave Matthews albums, I'll kill you. That said, I don't think I listen to my old Weird Al albums from when I was ten enough. Or my Spice Girls album! Thanks for reminding me of good times, shithead. Note: Just so this isn't a completely worthless post, I'd like to mention that I'm going back through my old Queen stuff thanks to this album, along with my U2 and Clash material... I find it odd that I haven't listened to any of this in a while, since these three bands are all in like my top 10... but with so many new albums to buybuybuy, who has time to listen to the old ones these days? -
Hrm, the title track is what does it for me. Sweet, sweet bliss... Which reminds me -- does anyone have the unplugged Reed/Cale/Nico album? I've been meaning to pick it up when I see it, but is it really as grand as I would think it is?
-
Yes yes, definitely consider that.

Hey, it was FUN to write. Well, you're just psychopathic, Janus. ...Though I liked writing it too, so hey. -
I'd say that anything aside of the Ryan Adams will serve you well, and maybe even the Adams stuff... I just haven't heard that. As for other stuff... maybe Bloodletting by Concrete Blonde? I got that at the same time as Disintegration, and loved 'em both.

Purple Rain takes it by just a tad... but while I consider most of Prince's stuff to be worth buying, the Hits albums are probably the best, just because everything on 'em is *****. That said, Prince is a God, but it's unfortunate that I haven't heard anything from him in almost a yearish. I mean, is he ever going to make a new album, or at least go on tour? I don't think he's done anything since that all instrumental North/South/East/West album, and that was mid-2003-ish, I believe. Either way though, Prince = teh roq.
