I decided to just skip Charalambides and go straight to BF... I'm only three songs in, but it's a LOT better than I remember it. Still no masterpiece, but it's very interesting/engaging. ...By the way... what the hell is with Beefheart's weight? It's... whacky.

I find it quite dissapointing. It's still quite good and you should buy it if you're a fan of either artist, but when I bought it I was thinking that it would be a "MegaPowers Collide!" masterpiece and it's not as good as either artist's prime solo stuff. Not nearly as good. Anyhow, I don't remember specifically if I found anything to be better than "Willie the Pimp," as I honestly haven't listened to the album in ages... but I doubt it. I love that song. Anyway my Zappa collection is quite modest... I'm trying to go in vaguely in chronilogical order, but am always hesitant in actually purchasing the Ruben & the Jets album. Absolutely Free Apostrophe (') Bongo Fury Freak Out! Lumpy Gravy We're Only In It For the Money Anyway this post has made me realize that I really haven't listened to Bongo Fury in a coon's age, so when I'm done with Charalambides and Pearls Before Swine I think I'm going to see if my opinion has changed on it over time. I'll get back to you people on that. FAKE EDIT: Kibagami, I'm glad that someone feels the same way about the first Modest Mouse album. It's the only one I listen to regularly nowadays. And why is that your favorite Dylan record? ANOTHER FAKE EDIT: Just because I'm interested -- Inc, what's your favorite Beefheart album? I've owned Trout Mask Replica since the seventh grade, and always cherished it, but for some reason never went beyond that. I just recently picked up Safe As Milk and an album of interviews lately though, and am totally enjoying the former (while the latter is rather amusing.) Any recommendations from there? I've always been interested in what his later works sound like.

Don't mind if I take advantage of that, actually (and by the way Brunzell will kill you for that The Final Cut comment -- I believe he loves it): Uncle Meat Over-Nite Sensation Zoot Allures Sheik Yerbouti What do each of those specifically sound like?

My Floyd favorite would have to be Wish You Were Here. There's only five songs, and while at first I only truly enjoyed three of them, over time I've come to accept every last one of them to be pretty much perfect. My least favorite would have to be The Wall, because I hate it. Oh, and how could I forget! Frank Zappa -- Apostrophe This is a COMPLETELY biased choice. I only own I think seven of his albums, and this was the first that I bought. I enjoy it more than Freak Out!, which is typically its main competition for best Zappa album I believe, though I am yet to experience any of Frank's albums involving the words Sheik or Garage. And I don't own one You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore! simply because there are far too many and I am intimidated.

Well... I'll make this as short as humanly possible. I don't really feel like typing, honestly, but I'm desperately bored and in need of some solid discussion, so here's the topic: What are your favorite (absolute favorite or maybe top two) albums from a few artists with insanely gigantic discographies? Nick Cave, David Bowie, Prince, Sonic Youth, the Fall, and so on and so forth all come to mind. I'll post some of mine later, but for now I'll just start us out with two: David Bowie -- Hunky Dory I suppose I've just been listening to this one a lot lately. Usually Ziggy or something from the Berlin-era comes to mind, but I don't know, "Queen Bitch" and "Life On Mars?" in The Life Aquatic a while back got me in a huge Hunky Dory phase that I've been stuck in for months. Admittedly, there are one or two tracks on here that I just don't like. Brian Eno -- Here Come the Warm Jets For Eno I've only heard three albums, so I can't really say this with too much confidence, but this album is just terrific and I like it a lot more than his third album, which I find overrated. The first song hooks you and it's good all throughout. And there's just something about the title track that closes the album that really lured me in despite it being ridiculously simple and repetitive. The production sound is solid all throughout. Sonic Youth -- Confusion Is Sex The two most recent albums are fantastic and then there's their prime streak of indie albums that I love (though I hate Dirty,) but this one just captures a really scary sound that SY unfortunately got away from as their career progressed. It doesn't work sometimes, but when it works it does so in excellent fashion. Anyhow... Prince is a difficult one; we could always start out with him, but I'm actually very interested in everyone's picks for Sonic Youth and Bowie. So... well yes. Guh. Please, discuss.

Ditto. Or, assuming that the show is over, at least post what you played, so that I know what I missed.

Inc have you seen Slint live yet? I'm seeing them next weekend and bought Tweez yesterday, which I enjoy very much (though it's "very good and promising" as opposed to the "band reaching perfect sound" of Spiderland.) I'm interested in how they've been performing on this reunion tour of theirs, and whether or not they're just going ahead and playing their entire discography onstage, which they very well could.

Albums You Own But Don't Listen To

Me too, except I ended up trading in the ones I didn't listen to. I also listen to those two, as well as Revolver and for some reason Magical Mystery Tour. I have owned MMT for a year and a half and up until a month and a half ago I had listened to it twice. Since then I've listened to it seriously twelve times. The production on the album could be the best production on any Beatles album. It's a bold statement, but the drum and vocal sound is just perfectly scrumptious. Plus -- how good is the title-track as an opener?

You should break up with her. And by the way IDRM, who the hell is that in that image in your profile. I've read dozens of posts by you today, and each one has been made distinctly haunting every time I see that.

    Rock and fuckin' Roll.

Agreed. I own his first record, and I put it in from time to time and it's relatively enjoyable, but really, it's the persona that makes Elvis so awesome. I might just like '70's-campy-fat-Elvis the best because that's when his persona/icon-stature was most interesting.

    Rock and fuckin' Roll.

Just as a note, it always really pisses me off when people today complain about how some pop artists suck because they "don't even fuckin' write their own songs" when many of the Elvis-esque acts of way back when didn't write their own material either. And these people typically love Elvis. "Dude he has SOUL." By the way whoever was putting Elvis down should stop trying to swim against the tide and just accept his awesomeness.

Just out of interest, what's your favorite of the Big Star records? I bought Sister/Third a long while back and liked it a lot, but since everyone is always saying "omgz best big star album ever it's soooo good omgz" I found it a bit overrated and was sort of turned off from checking out the other albums. For the record though, I'm not a huge fan of their Velvet Underground cover.

    Recent Purchases

Agreed. I rented the movie, bought the soundtrack, and then bought the movie. In that order. And to think it's the guy from Pop Will Eat Itself.

After two years of checking for it every time I enter a CD store, I finally saw a copy of Wire's Pink Flag. Thank Jesus. I'd already heard all of the songs, but hey -- the cover is fun to look at!

    SWF Lockdown Card 2-23-05

I'm in Utah right now skiing and this is the first time I've been able to reach a computer. If there is anyone who can possibly take over my booking duties tonight, please step forward now. Otherwise, I... hrm, I'd say there's about an 80% chance I can get online again tonight, so there's nothing worth worrying too much about.

Top Three Most Played Albums in Recent Weeks

I never thought much of this one, but now upon relistening, I'm really, REALLY digging about seven of the eleven tracks. I'd say the production on this record is pretty much better than anything else that they've ever done, and song-wise I think it just moved up on my Beatles list from like spot #7 to spot #4-ish. I've been humming the title track all day. Nothing to say about this one. You either rock the Sam Cooke or you don't. This has always been my least favorite Drake release, but it has some of his best tunes on it, and it's just a really, really fucking spectacular album. The fact that this is his weakest effort really says something.

At any rate, it sure as hell isn't OK Computer.

    Nick Cave

That's about all that lip I'm gonna have. It means that it should be used more, regardless of how much it's currently used. In context of my original statement, it's used less than in rap. Now don't ever mouth off to me again. You tell 'em, IDRM.

    Nick Cave

So, after years of not listening to Nick Cave because I was much too intimidated by that gigantic (and freakishly consistant) discography, I finally delved randomly into his long list of releases about a week ago by picking up Let Love In. And wow. I like this even more than The Birthday Party. I've been listening to the album all week (I'm opening my girlfriend's Valentine's Mix CD with "Do You Love Me?" and closing it with Part 2, actually,) and today I picked up Henry's Dream, which I'm listening to right now (it's also fantastic, and I'm not even done yet.) Anyway, while Nick definitely has a token sound that you can pick out of just about anything else, he evidentially has quite a varying discography with many different musical phases and whatnot, and I'm not so sure where to go from here, seeing as how damn prolific the guy is. I might just start from the beginning, or get The Boatman's Call... But yes, since I'm WAY late on getting into him, and I know there's three or four Nick Cave freaks on this board, you can all educate me from here. Favorite songs/favorite albums/random comments are all accepted, and yes... what should I buy next?

    Your Five Favorite Anything

Top Five Two-fers. 1) "Constantinople"/"Sinister Exaggerator" -- The Residents (Duck Stab) 2) "Gigantic"/"River Euphrates" -- Pixies (Surfer Rosa) 3) "These Burgers"/"Steak for Chicken" -- The Moldy Peaches (The Moldy Peaches) 4) "Apostrophe"/"Uncle Remus" -- Frank Zappa (Apostrophe) 5) "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" -- The Beatles (Abbey Road)

    Your Five Favorite Anything

I've never done an overall version. Wow. Maybe that's because I can never think of five songs to put on here. But, eh, here we go. Of the moment: George Gershwin -- "Rhapsody in Blue (Zubin Mehta conducted version)" The Velvet Underground -- "Heroin" Television -- "Torn Curtain" Slint -- "Good Morning Captain" Talking Heads -- "Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)" I feel bad that there's no Nick Drake on there, and I think it's too soon to put any Nick Cave in there just yet, but eh, this is my list today.

Something that I'm out of the know of: When exactly IS your radio show, Incandenza? You told me a while back but I obviously forgot, and forgot that you had a radio show in general until about two minutes ago. And yes, the two proper albums rise above Substance tenfold.
