Speaking of Kimbo, his CBS opponent is James Thompson. This could end up being scary bad for EliteXC. Think about it like this: Kimbo is probably the heavy favorite, but at the same time Thompson is the most complete mixed martial artist that Kimbo has faced so far. He puts Ray Mercer, Bo Cantrell, and Tank to shame. So the main problem with that is that every hardcore MMA fan knows that James Thompson kind of sucks hard. In fact, he got KTFO by Brett Rogers (I think) at the Kimbo/Tank card. Even casual fans might remember that. If Kimbo still isn't ready for a real fighter, this could be a disaster. I think he is ready but I thought they might throw him one more can for the mainstream audience. You can argue that Thompson is sort of a can, but I think he's miles ahead of what Kimbo has seen so far.

Actually, that's a big part of it. They view Duke as elitists and transplanted New Jersians coming down and thumbing their nose at Southern tradition. There are many instances where they bring up the elite world view that Duke, both as a university and basketball program, has that everything and anyone is beneath it. There is a section where he is interviewing a Duke law professor who happens to be an ardent Tarheel fan and he says that you can always spot the students who went to Duke undergrad because it doesn't take them very long to bring up money and they never talk about anything other then themself. That's pretty much a microcosm of the main viewpoint the book takes. There are many pictures painted throughout the book where completely rational people express absolute hatred for Duke basketball (or UNC but mostly Duke). But that's not the whole book. Basically it follows the 2005 championship Tarheels. He scores interviews with Shavlick Randolph, J.J. Redick, Dean Smith, Art Heyman (famous Duke player from the 50s, 60s), and even Coach K. himself. He also gets into the inner circle of Melvin Scott, who if anyone remembers was a little used shooter from the Doherty days who saw his playing time drop to almost zero when Roy Williams came in. But all of those sections are extremely interesting because Melvin is from inner city Baltimore. The type of inner-city Baltimore you see on The Wire. And basically everyone in Baltimore is constantly telling him what he's doing wrong and how he doesn't get the playing time he deserves, etc. It's a really good look at just how much pressure even non-star college players can be under.

I'm currently re-reading it and it truly is a good book. Recommended for any college basketball fan, really. It gives a good perspective to how much the Duke/UNC rivalry means to people who live in North Carolina.

I'd like to chime in on this. I try to avoid confrontation as much as possible and I'm not sure I'll ever be in the situation but if anyone came at me with a knife - they are going down. If a woman was slapping me or something minor I certainly wouldn't hit her but when a weapon that can end my life comes in to play all bets are off. But what the fuck do I know? Most of the parties I've been to the past few years got out of hand when people were arguing about an article in the New Yorker.

I think things have been pretty good the last few months. We've had threads for major shows, major news and mostly everything else has gone in the CTDWAT. I aim to keep it that way. I'm going to unpin those threads now. If anyone feels like complaining about it - I'll consider re-pinning them. This will also help you to know when there is an upcoming show because it will be the only pinned thread.

I completely agree. You'll barely even notice I'm doing anything. Except now that HTQ is not a mod anymore not a single mod even comes in here and there are always little housekeeping things that need to be done. I also made this thread to see if there will be any objection to me unpinning the two video threads. I don't think anyone is using them/watching the videos. If I'm wrong - let me know, but I think they don't warrant their placement. Up until yesterday the subtitle on CTDWAT was approximately 5 months old and about 30-40 pages of discussion back!
