    Cloverfield

Kinetic - cool. I misunderstood what you were getting at. I think a "monster floods New Orleans" movie would only work if it had something to say about how fucked up the whole situation was, between poor government response to people turning on one another during the whole thing. Without giving anything away, I think Cloverfield escapes poor taste because of what it chose to spend it's time on. New Orleans and 9/11, to me, are divided mainly by the way the government and the immediate geographical victims reacted. If an unprepared infrastructure totally disintegrates, leaving New Orleans unable to fight back against the thing until it spends itself and leaves, then there's something worth exploring there. Basically, a monster movie where we just abandon the city and we see how exceedingly fucked up that would be - that would be worth making (as a comparison). Interesting ideas.

    Cloverfield

Kinetic, a thought: Godzilla was, let's be honest, an answer to Hiroshima. If the Japanese can cope by creating a monster movie from the destruction brought to them by a *nuke*, then we can let people begin to explore the effects of 9/11. We lost two buildings -and please, please, please, please, please don't think I am devaluing that in any way!! -- but they got fucking nuked. I don't believe the answer to 9/11 is to run from it, ignore it or make it untouchable. The thing about Cloverfield is this: it's not about that monster. It's about ordinary people doing extraordinary things - heroic things - in the face of destructive evil and tragic loss. Lots of people did that on 9/11, when ideological monsters tore the city apart - and that should be elevated and honored. I think that's what makes Cloverfield something very good and not something exploitive or distasteful. The origin of the monster movie lies in trying to figure out our place in a destructive world. It's kind of fitting, in a very strange way, to have Cloverfield emerge to help do that. Just my thoughts on the subject.

    Cloverfield

Saw it at midnight. I thought it was pretty damn great. I feels more like a ride than a movie. On the way home last night I felt like I had somehow survived the fucking destruction of Manhattan. I expected CNN to have coverage of it or something.

    The Matter of Leena

Having no pre-set is always preferable (and if I remember the days when you couldn't change the title at all until you hit like a hundred posts or so, it's always been preferable). But it's certainly not a big deal by any stretch. But the automatic accusation of being some banned poster is probably unnerving for a total newbie. Just sayin'.

    The Matter of Leena

Yeah I know. And it's fine. It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me to fuck with new people like that. I've been around for years off and on and I get the joke but a new person might just think we like fucking with people for no reason. Which, come to think of it, I guess we do. Fair enough. : )

    Book recommendations

If you're into Sci-Fi, Peter David's New Frontier stuff is pretty good. I like his approach to the Trek universe better than most of the official continuity.

    The Matter of Leena

Yeah, the "Probably Leena" thing really isn't amusing. I post primarily in OAOAST. I'm fucking Spider-Poet. Why fuck with people's titles?

    Speed Racer movie

There's a shot that looks like a hotel lobby where these chicks that are dressed kind of like stewardesses look like they were green screened. It looks unfinished. My guess is things like that and the final look of the races will probably be a lot better. Looks fun to me. Looks like Speed Racer. I mean, how do you translate Speed Racer? You can't be too serious, but you can't just paste everything into live action copies. So you just push everything to absurdity and hope the emotional core evens it out. I think it might.

    Guns

I'm kind of in the same area as Nightwing on this. The problem isn't guns, the problem is inadequate psychological help, poverty, etc., but also there's no reason to not try and find regulations that help.

    ECW 11/27/07

No lie. I mark for Festus. I was pleasantly surprised to start watching again and find that tag match. However, I only marginally cared about Vis/Kane. Why no Punk? I hate not having a brand's champ on their own show.

    Merry Xmas!

I live with college friends. I probably won't be going home. They probably will. So... probably just sitting home, in the quiet, writing.

As the song KICKS IN, BLUE PYRO EXPLODES ON THE STAGE as the Moon EXPLODES into a Phoenix design. The pyro generates a ton of smoke, through which LP appears, making his way to the ring with a determined stride, adjusting his elbow pads. He slides in and hits the far turnbuckle, pointing to the crowd before throwing his arms up in a presumed victory. Entrance Attire Just his ring gear. Ring Attire Black tights with white triangles pointing down from the waist, white elbow pads, white knee pads, white boots with the calf cut out. Finishing Moves Lunar Rising – Vertebreaker Phoenix Kick – Huge Superkick, bursting out from the corner Signature Moves Snap DDT Big Elbow Drop Pin Basic Moveset Just a basic mix of a good technical game and some flying – and he knows how to brawl. Manager/Valet/Sidekick None Currently Catchphrases/Trademark Gestures When setting up for the Phoenix Kick, he drops to a low stance in the corner, hands on knees, motioning for the guy to come get it. History/Background/Career Highlights Stairway to Oblivion vs Mystery Weirdness Connection for the Tag Titles. Vs. Zack Malibu – Anytime As SpiderPoet he competed hard, despite rough patches with his then girlfriend/valet Black Widow. He took pride in his championship reigns, especially his run with El Dandy in the Los Infernales. His favorite opponent was his friend, Zack Malibu, with whom he had what he considers his favorite match thus far. Then he disappeared. Plans for a comeback were mysteriously halted in the interim. But now, like a Phoenix, he will rise from the ashes of his old career. Police arrest 700

They may not have a direct conscious memory of it, but they will bear subconscious behaviors and scars that they won't understand when they reach adolescence and adulthood. Their most impressionable years of cognitive development were full of this. It isn't over for them by a long shot.

Chris Benoit Dead - Toxicology results released

Damn. I hadn't heard about this until this morning. At first it didn't make sense to me either but... he gets home, they argue, he kills her (maybe accidentally in a moment of passion), lies to the kid in a broken mental state... kills Daniel and then hangs himself, feeling cornered and finished. 'Roid Rage and a history of domestic abuse need to be outweighed by other evidence. I hate this, I loathe it, because I hate seeing people who were heroes to me fall. But I kind of have to look at the evidence and just mourn whatever happened in his soul and what happened in that house.
