I tell you, Starbuck is something altogether different. That stuff with Aurora has a purpose, kids.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FROM JAMES CONE REGARDING: The first of Hule's "Tri-Bulation" series of 3 matches.
-
If there's room, throw Phoenix in there, but not Hule. Phoenix would never pass up that opportunity, even if he does have other machinations going on in the show. Hule "The Name" Bartowski vs Spoiler'd because it'll be announced on hD.

I have manic depressive/bipolar disorder type 2.
Turbo Lion replied to Matt Young's topic in General Chat
Yeah. I've had to deal with some bad side effects. It can definitely be a terrible experience when you hit on a drug that just doesn't mix well with you. It's cool that you got through it, though. I thought I was going to go crazy with obsessive worrying. It got the point where I developed hardcore OCD habits, the craziest of which was driving around a block a few times to make sure that I hadn't hit anyone and not realized it. And not just once... I did that for a year or two at its peak. No lie, a CSI episode set that off. I would check things multiple times, like the stove or a door that I had locked. I couldn't sleep because my mind wouldn't shut down. And just worrying about crazy shit sometimes. I would remember things two ways sometimes and not be sure which one was right - and the duplicate would always be changed so that I remembered me doing something awful in some circumstance. A real bizarre existential break. I had a real meltdown for a while. I'm back at like, 95% now, though. It was hard and it was a lot of work but good counseling and a good environment went a long, long, long way. Really all that's left now are little echoes every now and then that are easily recognizable as incorrect thinking. It took 4 years of work, though. -

Czech - Apologies for the way I worded that. I wasn't sure where you were coming from so I went up against the strongest extreme. I figured if it wasn't a correct interpretation we'd end up going back and forth until we got to the appropriate middle ground. I think we did, but I did hit it a little stronger than I probably needed to. VX - For sure, being on it forever isn't a pleasing option. Learning to manage it well is. BUT, I don't think that it's always a case of being a "slave" to a drug. Sometimes, if the meds are really doing what they're supposed to do, you're just being put back into balance. Which is freeing, not enslaving. The acknowledgment that one has a problem that has a physical cause and that this is really beyond their control is important. Bodies aren't perfect. But organizing the importance of this information and the relationship of the medication to it is also very important. VX is right in that you can't let it be a crutch or a handicap. It's an aid in a process that also requires willpower and work. It's not a perfect analogy but... well, let's say a wrestler tears a ligament. I had an injury like that in high school, with the bonus of having bone chips behind my kneecap. Drugs for the pain help, but you also have to rehab. And if you want to get back into game form you have to push even harder. Again, not a perfect analogy but... the goal here is learning to recognize why and when you shift into these different modes of feeling and thinking. And learning how to deal with them rationally, and to do that consistently. Meds are an aid, hopefully temporary, combined with good counseling, to get to an end like that. But don't just use them and then cop out of the process. You won't really better yourself then. -

That, I don't know. But there is certainly truth to it. Which is why finding a good doctor that you trust is very important. And you are right about improper medication being a factor in many of those instances with teen violence. But it's no doubt combined with that developmental issue in a big way. Part of the reason that I called it a "fad" is because, to me, it functions like one. It happened before Columbine, yes, but it seemed to have spiked afterwards. It became "fashionable" in a psychotic way, to try and make a point by murder and suicide by these clearly imbalanced kids who needed real help. Columbine popularized it in a bizarre way. I wasn't trying to be snarky or de-value the horrific nature of it. I was saying that it is a strange cultural by-product of untreated disorder in an age group easily influenced. It's a personal theory, but one that seems to have merit to me. -

And one of those elements is also counseling. Which he seems to be involved with. And you're right, the brain is complex. The teenage brain is crazy - studies have shown that teens generally don't have a fully developed center for decision making - no doubt a factor in the school shooting fad. But unless I'm mistaken, he's in his twenties when that should be evening out. I think he's just a year younger than me (I'm 25). I'm not advocating a blind pharmaceutical haze at all. Perhaps I was wrong to omit the rest of the things I've said here. He needs to be aware and educated and be involved in the process, not blindly following a single doctor to hell and back. No, no... that's dangerous for anyone to do for any treatment situation. But the notion that many have that pursuing treatment is wrong somehow is... well, unhealthy. -

That's not ignorance at all, Czech. That's fucking experience. My sister and her son are both diagnosed with this. It runs in my family. I deal with people who ignore the problem, and who are constantly held back by it all the time. And by held back I mean are so irrational in their swings that they end up in criminal trouble. It's ignorant to take a stance of refusing to treat the issue with anything other than sheer willpower for... what? A belief that it's a conspiracy to sell more pills? I'm not telling him to remain uneducated about suggested treatments and their side effects. Keeping up with that should be obvious. If there are problems, he needs to immediately report to his doctor - and if his doc keeps pushing something at him he needs a 2nd and maybe 3rd opinion. Being aware and educated about your treatment is a must. But I am saying that this, "people don't need the medicines" stuff is bullshit. It's dangerous macho bullshit at that. There's nothing wrong with treatment. Be smart about it, keep up with it and find a doctor willing to work with you to find the right combination of elements. But assert yourself and go in armed with knowledge. -

I'd say that's a fallacious redirect, though. The pancreas is different than the brain, but the central problem - an organ isn't manufacturing something needed for healthy living - is still the same. No shame in medicating it. Which is not to say there's not some legwork involved in actively working to interact with our thinking - there is. I've worked hard to meet and dismantle a lot of my OCD tendencies and I've come a long way. Believe me, I'm aware of the power of learning to think well. But not treating a chemical issue won't make that process any easier. It may make it harder. -

Glad you're trying medications. Hopefully your doctors understand that that's a fluid process and will continue working, if these aren't the right meds for you, to find the right ones. My sister is an uncontrolled bi-polar/manic. She's completely fucked her life up and refuses to learn - largely because she's at such a stage that she just doesn't think rationally anymore. Like... ever. And if people give you shit for it, ignore them. It's ignorance, plain and simple. We don't get pissy with diabetics for having to treat what is essentially a chemical issue in their bodies, why do we think the brain is any different? G'luck. -
That's a pretty apt analogy. I think Moore said in an interview that that's territory they're probably not going to deal with very much. What I mean by Cylon God is that Now that we know what Caprica is about, my original theory is shot: .

THE NEXT KARATE KID and no I don't mean Hilary Swank
Turbo Lion replied to BUTT's topic in Television & Film
I'm already signed on to not watching it. And committed to three sequels. Man... you know, I'm Mister Objectivity. I'll generally watch just about anything because, you know, sometimes you get surprised. But this? This is ridiculous. This is such a generic plot - bullied youth learns to stand up for himself under the teaching of an eccentric mentor - that there's ZERO REASON to try and connect it to The Karate Kid in any way whatsoever. You know what I'd rather see? Mel Gibson return in Mad Max: Beyond Kindergarten and mentor a kid into kicking ass. I'd go see that. -
Yeah, the 4 opener was right up there. Obi Chris - Like the dark side, it can consume you. Enjoy. Battlestar is a rare show that I actually refuse to read spoilers about. The first time viewings are that much fun for me.

My wife and I picked up a 26" for $300. 720P. We won't be getting cable for a while but I'm picking up an HD broadcast antenna today and putting money away for a Blu Ray player. I noticed a BR player at Target for 199 last night. Am i right in guessing it might explode within a year?

And yet, they have such a kickass state motto: "LIVE FREE OR DIE". Which that one merely-ok-but-not-as-great-as-WITH A VENGEANCE-Die Hard movie ripped off. At least I think that's New Hampshire. FOR THE SHOW: Ring Rats Heaven.Com names its INNERNET WORLD CHAMP of the Year. Update on The Name's injury!

From the video, I see no reason to need a tazer, and certainly no reason for a gun. The police in my town are pretty worthless. I don't even hear much about them harassing college kids. But at least they're honest about it - when my truck was broken into and my stereo stolen, the cop basically said thanks for filling out a report but this thing is probably gone. He just kind of looked at the broken glass and the busted window frame, never considered trying to look for any evidence and had me fill out a piece of paper.

I'm hoping that Exodus Part II is a down payment on a future ass kicking, as it were. As in, I hope they know that they have to meet and exceed that in the finale. No bullshit, no screen goes black while Adama's in the bathroom - it has to have everything from great action to great resonance.
-
The only thing I've seen is that he thought he was grabbing his tazer and not his gun. Which, if true, means manslaughter, not murder. I believe he is an ex-soldier, fresh out of Iraq - I suppose its possible that his military training overrode his police training. If so, its tragic. If he just shot the kid, it's fucked up.
-
Exodus Pt. II is my favorite episode from start to finish. Fantastic battle, Adama having the balls to jump into a drop, and the Pegasus save. The people I was with were so caught up in it that when that happened they cheered. Like Stone Cold showed up or something. It was bizarre and awesome.

Yep. Right up there in the top 5. Though its worth noting that "Robin's Reckoning I and II" count as one to me.

Man, I bet the Season 3 finale's final five minutes or so would be pretty gorgeous in HD.

I'm stoked. Ready to go for the final episodes. I think Baltar might be the Cylon God, but I don't know if that also means he's a cylon. All the signs are there that he's... something connected to the cylons at least. I believe Starbuck is an avatar of the goddess Aurora. Or she flat out IS Aurora or something.
-
Not all cops are scum. I know some that are good and legitimately have people's best interests at heart. I think KOAB's right. Once a guy is cuffed and on the ground, I'm not sure even a tazer is warranted. We're too quick to start using weapons. Who was in danger there? The cop who was on his feet? Apparently not. The guy cuffed on the ground ended up dead.
