Eheh. I forgot I even had the link back here. So, as a musician, these are my favorite songs.

And please, if you don't like something on the list, state an opinion, and don't take shots. Just a favor.

1. Primus - "Antipop"

I'm sorry, but like most people have one band that they are so biased towards, mine is DEFINATELY Primus. Agent of Oblivion's signature sums it up nicely. And on a side note, I'm actually learning how to play this song. That thumb popping crap hurts.

2. Alice Cooper - "Generation Landslide"

14 years old, and already a yuppie. Heh. But seriously, I really can't disrespect Alice. He's been at the...the.....damn, I had a good name for his genre....oh, we'll just call it showmanship metal....business longer than the only other people worth mentioning in the genre. Which would be White Zombie and Rob Zombie.

3. The Mars Volta - "Concertina"

Okay. Little back story on Mars Volta. *ahem* Once upon a time, there was a band called At The Drive In. They kicked much ass. They reached a creative fork in the road, and split up (Sparta and Mars Volta.). Now, I will say one thing: Mars Volta has a TON of potential, and the experience to back it. This song is worth downloading. The lyrics are hard to find, though.

4. Sunna - "I Miss"

This song is so wonderfully disturbing. An acoustic track by an industrial rock band (A DAMN good one at that), that, from what I can tell, is through the eye of a psychopath in an asylum. And the perfect part is that it's followed up by "Insanity Pulse", which is A) The most evil song I've ever heard, and B) a psychotic episode through the eyes of aforementioned psychopath. The lyrics create a story, and that's REALLY rare nowadays.

5. Mudvayne - "Cultivate"

Say what you will about Mudvayne, but the fact remains that for me, if it wasn't for "Dig", I would have never gotten into metal. Then I realized Dig wasn't their best song. While searching on LimeWire for Mudvayne (not allowed to have KaZaA, after the 5 or 6 viruses that resulted from the program), I found a few songs. Death Blooms, Under My Skin, Pharmaecopia...then I came across this little gem. Took 2 days to download, but I got it. Dear...GOD. this song is NOTHING like what I was expecting. It's about 5:39, and the stand out track on Kill I Oughta/The Beginning of All Things to End. It in fact, sticks out like a sore thumb. Listen to Poop Loser, then Cultivate, and you'll know what I mean.

Those are my 2 cents...er...5....or my nickel....ah, fergeddit.

And remember: IT's a sad world we live in when 14 year olds are 6 year E-Fedding veterans.

1. How much Primus have you heard? Not everything yet? Get crackin'. I'd say Sailing the Seas of Cheese is their best effort, with Frizzle Fry following at second. All of their albums have something awesome on them, so it's worth getting the collection. Les can play a bass like no one else I've ever heard.

Learning to play his stuff can be a motherfucker, though. Antipop's probably the technically easiest one to learn to play, it's just a matter of the various effects he uses.

My top five Primus tracks:

1. Through the Electric Grapevine

2. Nature Boy

3. Tommy the Cat (the Rhinoplasty version, especially)

4. To Defy the Laws of Tradition (dig the YYZ beat on the high hat at the beginning of the song. Rush and The Residents begat Primus.)

5. DMV.

---

4. You need some brutal death metal, stat. If you're looking for evil, here's a nice selection:

Nile-"Execration Text"

Cryptopsy-"Cold Hate, Warm Blood" or "Slit your Guts"

Dying Fetus-"Praise the Lord (Opiate of the Masses" and "Pissing in the Mainstream"

Acid Bath-"Jezebel" or "God Machine"

Speaking of Acid Bath, judging by a couple of your picks, you're a prime candidate to absolutely fall in love with this band. They're sinister as fuck, intensely heavy, creative, and talented.

They've got two full-length releases in When the Kite String Pops (A ***** metal album, IMO), and Paegan Terrorism Tactics which is a little heavier and more focused than the first album, but not as good. Pretty much all of their songs kick 1000 kinds of ass. They mellow out, too. Check out "Scream of the Butterfly," "The Bones of Baby Dolls," and "New Death Sensation" for some awesome acoustic tracks that still manage to be sick.

Download a track or two of theirs, I guarantee you will NOT be disappointed.

...Unless of course you've heard them already and know all of this.

In response to Agent of Oblivion's post...

I've heard a LOT of Primus. Only have two CDs, though. I also have an avi of a Jazzfest Performance with the Frog Brigade. The CDs I have are Tales From The Punchbowl and Anti-Pop. And actually, my exposure to Primus came from Tony Hawk Pro Skater. I thought that was a sitar or somethin'.

And I....well...REALLY dont like Death Metal. It seems frenzied and incoherent to me. And that deep screaming only gets you so far. I'm excluding Power Symphony, though. More power to them. The reason I think "Insanity Pulse" is so evil is because of the CD. If you listen to the entire CD, it tells a story of the ups and downs of a dictator, also showing the side effects on the commoners that were abuse. Or something. Again, storytelling is rare nowadays. At least, that's how I see it.

Short version:

Heard of Primus.

Not into Death Metal.

That's definitely an excusable offense, however I must maintain on my Acid Bath recommendation, as they are absolutely 100% not a death band.

Frog brigade's some pretty weird stuff. I've got Purple Onion, and it's basically Les just screwing around with a few pals. There's nothing overly great on the album, but it's a fun listen once in awhile. Oysterhead I'd recommend highly, though. If you're not familiar with them, it's Les, Stephen Copeland from the Police, and Trey Anastasio from Phish. There's a couple songs on the cd, The Grand Pecking Order, that are a little too Dead/Phish/String Cheese jammy for me, but everything else on the album is some pretty decent stuff. "Army's on Ecstacy" is a good stand-out track.

Alright.

Being the (relatively) open soul that I am, I gave Acid Bath a try. The first song I downloaded was (surprise) Agent of Oblivion. Now, I have no right to tell you what you do or don't like, but I actually can't listen to this. It's not my fault, either. I live in a heavily religious family. If they found this, I'd be in deep fecal matter. Sorry.

I've heard of Oysterhead. One song of theirs, live, but otherwise not a lot. The song was "I Am Oysterhead" or something like that. And it's Stewart Copeland. ^^ One song isnt enough to form an opinion, but I'll look for more.

And on a side note, I cant believe I made no mention of the Deftones, or Led Zeppelin. Life's funny like that, isnt it? ^^;;

Screw this thread, let's talk about primus ;)

I have trouble picking a favourite album. I think 'Professor Nutbutter's house of treats' is my favourite primus song, but the rest of the album isn't in it's league. Right now, my favourite overall is brown, but I used to hardly think anything of that or pork soda. They just take a bit more getting used to. The rhinoplasty live tracks are godlike. I thought I was a decent bassist, but I can't can't slap for shit. If you guys can play any of that, well, I'm jealous.

4."Man in the Box" Alice in Chains

5."Gotta' Get Away" Offspring

These are the songs that have been in my top five longer than others, I think.

1. 'Goggles' - melvins

2. 'I know it's over' - The Smiths

3. 'I Get Wet' - Andrew WK

4. 'Day of the dying Alive' - The Butthole Surfers (early version of 'jimi' from the B sides collection, best guitar solo ever)

5. 'lateralus' - tool

But 'Something for the girl with everything' by sparks has been a favourite for a few months now, I have to say. That's more cos it just makes me smile every time I hear it than it actually being musical genius in the league of the songs I've listed.

My Primus Power Rankings:

1. Sailing the Seas of Cheese

2. Frizzle Fry

3. Pork Soda

4. Rhinoplasty

5. The Brown Album

6. Tales from the Punchbowl.

7. Antipop

8. Miscellaneous Debris

If we're including other Claypool Projects, I'd say Oysterhead's release was better than Antipop, and Frog Brigade's Purple Onion is better than Miscellaneous Debris. Sausage falls in that lower echelon too, IMO.

Sailing... Rules from start to finish, and transcends the realm of awesomeness with "Is It Luck?," "Tommy The Cat," and "Fish On."

Frizzle Fry's doesn't really have any weak spots, but lacks a killer track outside of "To Defy The Laws of Tradition," and "Too Many Puppies," although that track gets a little played out after a while.

Pork Soda has "Wounded Knee," which is a throwaway track from hell, and "Diamondback Stourgen" isn't too good either. It's just Les going on about fishing, with none of the great material that's on the first half of the album. "DMV" and "Nature Boy" are nigh-untouchable though.

Rhinoplasty is all kinds of fun, with godly live tracks.

Brown Album-Solid overall, but lacks a real stand out. Kalamazoo and Over The Falls are both good shit.

Punchbowl has my favorite and least favorite Primus songs, I think. Favorite being noted above, and my least being "Space Farm" which is throwaway crap, but isn't even entertaining while high.

Antipop's their weakest full-length album, and was too much of a departure from the other stuff for my liking. The special guests he had on the album (Like James Hetfield, who, although he didn't sing or do anything outwardly bad, still annoys me by his presence. Just have Ler play the riff. James played no role there whatsoever. Fucker.), all unnecessary bias aside, It just seems kind of slapped-together, and pretty "eh" overall.

M.D. is worth having if you've got all the other ones. Other than that, don't go out of your way. It's just covers and screwiness, although they do a Residents track. Can't remember the title offhand.

I've got MD, they do 'sinister exaggerator'. I really like the whole EP, actually. I think antipop's a tremendous album, but yeah none of it touches 'DMV' or 'nature boy'.

EDIT: I just posted what I was listening to in the wrong thread. In case you were wondering, it looks a bit like this.

Some of my favorite songs (the five that come to mind)

REM - It's the end of the wold as we know it

Janes Addiction - Pigs in Zen/ Jane Says

The Police - Everything she does is magic

A Tribe Called Quest - Scenario

Aerosmith - Dream On (Damn you Eminem for sampling this one)

As for Primus, I love this band. Totally off the wall. My favorite album by them was Suck on This, which is a live album recorded in one of my favorite venues, Berkeley Square. Primus is one of the best live acts I have seen and this album captures the magic of Primus in a intimate setting (Berkeley Square is a small venue). My favorite studio album is Frizzle Fry. My favorite songs are Winona's Big Brown Beaver and Frizzle Fry. Another cool thing about Primus is that they have made some of the most memorable videos, with Mr Krinkle and Winona's being my favorite.

And boy are these guys great live. I have seen them twice on New Year's and once at Lollapolloza. And all three shows were amazing.
