Sepultura doing Procreation of the Wicked is mine. I miss that band. Soulfly doesn't hold a candle to 'em.

Megadeth - "Paranoid" (originally Black Sabbath)

Megadeth - "Anarchy In The UK" (originally Sex Pistols)

Motörhead - "Louie Louie" (Kingsmen version)

Soil - "Raining Blood" (originally Slayer)

Metallica - "Astronomy" (honestly, I forget who did it first)

Metallica - "Am I Evil?" (originally Diamond Head) - Such a great cover most people think it's a Metallica original.

Manson's version of "Tainted Love"

Any song performed by the cover band Plain Jane (local band in SC). They kick so much ass. They did a particularly good cover of Steppenwolf's "Magic Carpet Ride"

Everclear's cover of the Speed Racer theme song. Awesome.

Pretty much everything on the first CD of Garage Inc, too.

fourteen posts and no mention of jimi hendrix's cover of 'all along the watchtower'. pathetic. that gets my vote for greatest cover ever (and it also has my favorite guitar solo).

other favorites:

jeff buckley's cover of 'hallelujah' is awesome.

cowboy junkies' 'sweet jane' is about as good as the original.

soft cell's version of 'tainted love' is actually a cover, and is a hundred times better than the original.

the beatles did a KILLER cover of 'long tall sally'.

i'm sure there's more, but that's all i got for now.

Agreed. Honorable mention goes to the Clash's version of I Fought the Law.

I like the cover of Brittney Spears "Hit Me Baby One More Time" by Mr. Bungle and the cover of the Kiss tune "Going Blind" by The Melvins.

All the songs on Metallics "The 5.98 EP, Garage Days Revisted" are excellant covers.

My favourite cover is "Turn The Page" by Metallica. I think that Metallica's covers were all tremendous, but I don't think any of them really made an old time classic song classic again... But "Turn The Page" kicked ass, was better than the original but was still very true to it.

WHOOO~!

Jimi Hendrix's "All Along The Watchtower" was damn good but I think the degree Metallica improved "Turn The Page" outweighs this one. Then again the utter pile of shit that was the music video kind of makes me sad... I can't decide now that I think about it.

Screw it I'll call it a tie.

You know it only took 14 posts because I hadn't answered it yet ;)

Seriously though, I'm in total agreement. I've always thought of Bob Dylan as a brilliant songwriter but a terrible singer. Jimi Hendrix has also covered "Gloria", although it was more for fun than a serious song (it appears on the box-set and probably somewhere else as well) and doesn't come out as well as "All Along the Watchtower".

I also really like Reel Big Fish's cover of "Take On Me". Since the original song is synthesized, they split it between the horns section and distorted guitar for the intro/bridge, and sounds really sweet, like it'd make a great bouncy party song. It has so much more life than the other rock covers of the song I've heard. RBF's cover of "Hungry Like the Wolf" is also pretty good, but not better than the original.

Also, even though it's a karaoke version, I like the Smashing Pumpkins' cover of "Landslide" simply because I don't really like Stevie Nicks' vocals on the Fleetwood Mac original.

"Gloria" of course not being by Bob Dylan but by Van Morrison. I'm pretty sure Hendrix has covered at least one other Dylan song though. I think it was "Drifter's Escape".

I don't know. His voice comes off really well sometimes, and than it also has this warn down quality I like about it.

Hendrix live did alot of Dylan covers, most notably Dylan's great "Like a rolling stone".

Mannfred Mann doing Springsteen's"Blinded by the Light". Pretty good arrangement.

Why has there been no mention of Santana's "Black Magic Women". Sure they had Peter Green (I think that's who) but it was still damn good.

I'm a huge U2 fan, but their version of Watchtower really sucks. They barely even knew the song when they played it and yet they still put it on Rattle and Hum.

Believe it or not, Radiohead does a great version of Glen Campbell's Rhinestone Cowboy and Carly Simon's Nobody Does It Better. Two cheesy songs made better.
