Great Covers

Recommended Posts

Guest Kinetic

I think I've heard it, actually. About as bad as can be expected, but not nearly as laughably horrible as whichever metal band's cover of Gary Numan's "Cars." I nearly pissed myself when I heard that. Didn't Type O Negative cover "I Want You (She's So Heavy)"? That's probably the only Beatles song I could see a metal band doing well.

I'll say this for Justin: He hits the high note on the line "I just wanna love ya" a hell of a lot better than Jay Z. That might be because he has no testicles, though.

Fear Factory did the "Cars" cover, and it was pretty damn bad. The video was only cool because when the dude in the car hits the heat, flames came out of the vents.

Has anyone ever blasphemed and done "A Day in the Life?" Because if so, I think I need to kill them.

Oh that Fear Factory cover is wretched, it actually has Numan on some of the vocals. IMO, it's a stupid song to cover in the first place. That's a REALLY bad example of a metal band covering a non-metal song.

Type O did in fact do Daytripper/She's so Heavy, and it rules. Tool also covered it, and it's even better.

Shades Apart - Tainted Love (Soft Cell)

Treepeople - Bigmouth Strikes Again (Smiths)

NOFX - Vincent (Don McLean)

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - Country Road (John Denver)

Descendents - Wendy (Beach Boys)

Reel Big Fish - Take on Me (A-ha)

Goldfinger - 99 Red Balloons (Nena)

Tori Amos - Thank You (Led Zeppelin)

Big Drill Car - Surrender (Cheap Trick)

Siouxsie and the Banshees - Dear Prudence (Beatles)

Oh, and Brian, I think Kotz is referring to Gary Numan's Cars, and not a song by the Cars.

soft cell was not the first artist to do 'tainted love'. it was originally an r & b, motown-type tune done by someone i don't remember.

my favorites, i bet everyone else will disagree with me:

boyzone: words (beegees)

boyzone:father and son (cat stevens)

blazin' squad:crossroads (but i'm the only person who thinks this is as good as the original)

atomic kitten:tide is high (blondie) this is a lot better than the original even tho i really like blondie

nearly all other cover versions suck, especially

abba covers and all queen covers apart from when lauryn hill did bohemian rhapsody

I dunno about Type O, but German metal band Coroner (broke up around '96 or so) covered "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" on their 1991 album (which is very good) Mental Vortex.

Just saying.

Damn, WelshJerichoMark reminded me of some:

Kylie Minogue singing Dancing Queen at the 2000 Olympics... I almost exploded from awesomeness overload.

And 10% of the A-Teens material is worthy of the Abba name.

NOFX - Vincent (Don McLean)

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - Country Road (John Denver)

Reel Big Fish - Take on Me (A-ha)

Me First did great cover songs all around.... Wild World, Stand By Your Man, Only The Good Die Young, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me, The theme from Cheers, Rainbow Connection, & so many more

Allister covering BSB's "I Want It That Way" and the theme from Fraggle Rock were actually awesome in both cases...

and Less Than Jake's covers of "You're The One That I Want" and "867-5309"

i'm such a punk head...

...Rainbow Connection...

Haven't heard Me First's version, but Fifteen's cover of Rainbow Connection is one I forgot to mention. The faux Kermit part at the end sells it big time.

And there ain't nothing wrong with punk. Not a damn thing.

"The Tide Is High" is actually a Jamican Ska song from the 1960's and was originally performed by a The Paragons. The original is far better than any of the covers. As for Blazing Squads, don't get me statered on that one.

Anyway, my favourite covers are:

"One Step Beyond" - Madness (Prince Buster)

"Madness" - Madness (Prince Buster)

"It Must Be Love" - Madess (Labi Siffre)

"Sweetest Girl" - Madness (Scritti Polliti)

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that you're a ska fan. ;)

Are you strictly old-school Jamaican and British 1st/2nd Wave ska, or do you indulge in any of the later American variety?

And to godthedog, Soft Cell did write Tainted Love. You're thinking of the Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go medley version, where they tack on the Motown song at the end. I believe the original is a Smokey Robinson and the Miracles song. (BTW, I loathe that version.) :firing:

George Thoroughgood - "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer"

Wow, I didn't know this song or Santana's "Black Magic Woman" were covers... speaking of Santana, don't forget "Oye Como Va" was also a cover. That's another damn good Santana song, although I admit I've never heard Tito Puente's original.

I believe "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" was originally by some Blues person. Thoroughgood has covered several old blues songs.

I'm glad no one has mentioned Eric Clapton's cover of "I Shot The Sheriff". The original by Bob Marley is way better. I also didn't care for Metallica's cover of "Turn the Page", Bob Seger's original was alot better.

Hendrix has done quite a few covers, but most of them were recorded in the studio and not meant for an album or live.

I like

Jimi Hendrix - All along The Watchtower

Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal :ducks the rotten fruit:

Dead Kennedys - Viva Las Vegas

Dead Kennedys - Rawhide

Dead Kennedys - Take This Job And Shove It

Frank Zappa - Purple Haze

Kid Rock - A Country Boy Can Survive :ducks the bricks:

AFI - Last Caress

Anthrax - Phantom Lord

Apocalyptica - One

Boy Sets Fire - Holiday In Cambodia

Bullring Brummies - The Wizard

Corrosion Of Conformity - Lord Of This World

White Zombie - I'm Your Boogieman

Deftones - No Ordinary Love

Dropkick Murphys - Halloween

Fear Factory - Cars

Henry Rollins Band - Earache My Eye

Devo - Working In The Coal Mine...can't remember if this is a cover or not

Iron Maiden - Bohemian Rhapsody

Joined At The Head - Whole Lotta Rosie

Korn - Lowrider

Marilyn Manson - I Put A Spell On You

Marilyn Manson - Golden Years

Marilyn Manson - Rock N' Roll Nigger

Marilyn Manson - Willy Wonka Theme

Metallica - Am I Evil

Metallica - Breadfan

Metallica - Last Caress - Green Hell

Metallica - So What

Metallica - The Prince

Metallica - Whiskey In The Jar

Motley Crue - Smokin' In The Boys Room

Motorhead - Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers

Mr. Bungle - Hit Me Baby One More Time

Ozzy & Dweezil Zappa - Stayin Alive

Ozzy - Purple Haze

Pennywise - A Land Down Under

Pennywise - I Get Around

Plugz - Hombre Secreto (Secret Agent Man)

Plugz - La Bamba

Pride and Glory - The Wizard

Ramones - Spiderman

Sex Pistols - Brown Eyed Girl

Sex Pistols - I'm Not Your Stepping Stone

Soundgarden - Come Together

Weezer - Earth Angel

Now i'm not claiming that any of these are better than the original. Hell most of these are much worse than the original. These are just some covers that i personally like.

Sex Pistols - I'm Not Your Stepping Stone

1. Guilty of liking it also. Let the fruit fly.

2. Yes. The original is by R&B legend Lee Dorsey (the actual title is Working in the Coal Mine). I actually like Devo's cover of the Rolling Stones' (Can't Get No) Satisfaction a little more.

3. Great cover, but I have to give the nod to Minor Threat's version of it. Especially how it all fades in from nothing to full sound. Ian MacKaye is a god.

The winner of the worst cover of "I'm not your stepping stone" goes to Six Feet Under. MAN that song sucks.

I am indeed a ska fan. If indeed you are referring to me.

I'd say the British 1st/2nd is probably my favourite. However, I love all type of ska. It's all great dance music.

As for "Tainted Love", Soft Cell did not write it. It was orignally released in the 1960's by Gloria Jones and written by Ed Cobb.

Britney's "I love Rock n Roll"

Best Cover EEeeeeeeeeeeeever

Just Kidding!

But in Soft Rock/Pop...

The Corrs "Old Town" (Original by Phyl Lynnot) in The Corrs Unplugged is really great.

And in Hard Rock / Heavy...

Doro Pesch's (ex-Warlock) "I had too much to dream" is amazing.

I know, right now everyone of you is thinking.. Doro Who???

Well, you should go and look for her CDs, either as Doro or with Warlock, she totally Rocks.

Wow, you've done your research. Good call. I had no idea.

Just like Shakespeare said, "Nothing new under the sun"... unless that was a cover too... ;)

Aretha Franklin-- Respect

As much as I love the original, Aretha truly made the song her own.

**sigh**

Six Feet Under's covers of anything are great, simply for their hilarity.

Although their cover of "Blackout" (originally by The Scorpions, done with John Bush) is FAR superior to the original...
