Guest The Man in Blak Report post Posted July 16, 2002 Ones that have already been mentioned: Jimi Hendrix - "All Along The Watchtower" The Beatles - "Long Tall Sally" Nirvana - "The Man Who Sold The World" Metallica - "Turn The Page", "Am I Evil?" Ones that have not been mentioned: nine inch nails - "Dead Souls" Stone Temple Pilots - "Dancing Days" Eric Clapton - "I Shot The Sheriff" George Thoroughgood - "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer"
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted July 16, 2002 George Thoroughgood - "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" Wow, I didn't know this song or Santana's "Black Magic Woman" were covers... speaking of Santana, don't forget "Oye Como Va" was also a cover. That's another damn good Santana song, although I admit I've never heard Tito Puente's original.
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted July 16, 2002 The Afghan Whigs' version of the Clash's "Lost In The Supermarket" is my choice for favorite cover song. Another interesting, newer cover: David Bowie does the Pixies' "Cactus" on his latest album. I'll also second whoever said the Cap'N Jazz version of "Take On Me," if only because it's so totally random when it appears on the CD. It's like: garbled screaming indie rock, garbled harmonizing indie rock...A-Ha? Nice work.
Guest sk8420kid Report post Posted July 16, 2002 Another one to add: On the Weezer tribute cd Glasseater does this amazing cover of Holiday. It starts out very similiar to the original, but goes completely hardcore at the end. Glasseater is awesome hardcore punk I saw them bout a month ago with TBS and FATA. Guest Cerebus The Aardvark Report post Posted July 16, 2002 Here are some of my picks; I include live covers also, because those are often the best ones. The Afghan Whigs--"Can't Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe" A Perfect Circle--Amalgam of "Lovesong" and "Diary Of A Madman" (Live) Primus--"N.I.B." (not exactly a cover, since Ozzy does vocals, but it rules) The Afghan Whigs--"My World Is Empty Without You" The Afghan Whigs--"Beware" Dream Theater--"Hey You" (Live) Placebo--"Bigmouth Strikes Again" Death Cab For Cutie--"All Is Full Of Love" Garbage--"Kick My Ass" Dashboard Confessional--"Jamie" (better than the original) Therapy?--"Diane" The Afghan Whigs--"Creep" The Afghan Whigs--"If There's A Hell Below" (Live) I guess that's all for now. Guest starvenger Report post Posted July 16, 2002 Shonen Knife - "Daydream Believer" Reel Big Fish - "Take On Me" Anything that the Barenaked Ladies do a cover or cover medley of The Ramones - "Spider-Man" Most dead-on cover I've ever heard was Matthew Sweet's "Scooby-Doo"
Guest Brian Report post Posted July 17, 2002 I forgot Talking Head's "Take me to the River". What a D.A. I can be sometimes.
Guest treble charged Report post Posted July 17, 2002 There's a lot of good covers on the Fubar soundtrack (there's some bad ones, too). I'm partial to the treble charger cover of Roller (duh) (originally by April Wine) and the Sum 41 cover of Rock You (originally by Helix).
Guest Doomsault Report post Posted July 17, 2002 I don't care what anyone says, I liked Metallica's covers of Turn the Page, Astronomy, and Whiskey in the Jar.

Guest benoitrules2000 Report post Posted July 17, 2002 Now i admit that for the longest time i hate cover songs cuz they were usually shit and i had a freakin heart attack when i heard britney fuckin spears was doing i love rock'nroll which is a sin i believe but now sh thinks it was done by pat fuckin benatar!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH! What was the question again?, oh yeah but there are a few covers that are pretty cool. The best is probably ugly kid joe's version of cats in the cradle that just rules it by staying within the song yet going slightly heavier and different which is what a cover should be, different. That is why an aussie by the name of frank bennet is a fuckin genius. I doubt anyone here's heard of him but he takes his name from frank sinatra and tony bennett and covers tons of songs in the style of swing. His most ingenius cover has to be creep by radiohead, it's exactly the same song with depressing lyrics but done in an upbeat swing way, indescribable. He also does a killer cover of smashing pumpkins disarm. You gotta download some of his stuff if you get the chance.
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted July 17, 2002 Hey, this is kinda off-topic, but why are they called "cover songs", anyway?
Guest mesepher Report post Posted July 18, 2002 Hey, this is kinda off-topic, but why are they called "cover songs", anyway? my guess is that the band is "covering" another band's material?
Guest Mindless_Aggression Report post Posted July 18, 2002 I'm quite partial to Deadsy's cover of Tom Sawyer. Long as they don't release it as a single, all is well.
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted October 21, 2002 BUMP Yeah, Death Cab for Cutie's cover of Bjork's "All is Full of Love" is da bomb. Talking Heads' interpretation of Al Green's "Take Me to the River," however, may be my all time favorite cover. (Come to think of it, Living Colour does a credible version of TH's "Memories Can't Wait.")
Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted October 21, 2002 "Man Who Sold the World" by Nirvana (original by David Bowie) Took a shitty 80's song and made it an acoustic wonder. God bless Nirvana and their soul..If I believed in God anyways...
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted October 21, 2002 Definitely Cinnamon Girl, redone by Type O Negative, originally Neil Young. I also have a morbid fascination with Blood has Been Shed's cover of Baby Got Back.
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted October 22, 2002 Fiona Apple's "Across the Universe" was pretty good, I thought. Orgy's "Blue Monday" beats out the original because of the heavy interlude near the end and the original is just TOO DAMN LONG. Redman and whoever else did "Rapper's Delight" did the original song proud, even if it wasn't half as long as the original. Joe Cocker's "With a Little Help From My Friends" is better than the Beatles version, sez I. Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted October 22, 2002 Fiona Apple's "Across the Universe" IS good, but it violates a key rule about not covering The Beatles. Fiona gets a free pass because I like her, but I'd like to get my hands on some of those I Am Sam soundtrack contributors. In fact, I propose a law forbidding anyone I don't like from covering a song by anyone I do like. That way I'd be spared ever having to hear Axl Rose groan through "Knockin On Heaven's Door" ever again.
Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted October 22, 2002 Cannibal Corpses cover of "No Remourse"(Metallica) Six Feet Under's cover of "Jail Break" (Iron Maiden) Cradle of Filth's cover of "Hell Awaits" (Slayer) Kittie's cover of "Run Like Hell" (Pink Floyd)
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted October 22, 2002 Oh yeah, none of the covers on the I Am Sam soundtrack were very good at all, with Rufus Wainright's "Across the Universe" being decent and thus the best of the album. Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted October 22, 2002 There's a rule about not covering the Beatles? Man, half the bands on earth must've missed THAT memo.
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted October 22, 2002 It's Michael Jackson's fault!!! KILL HIM!!! Um, but make it so that he can keep releasing material somehow. Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted October 22, 2002 That's the problem exactly. It's been done to death and, more often than not, it's been done poorly. If I had the opportunity to write the memo, it would say this: You are not as good as The Beatles. You have nothing to offer this song. DON'T FUCKING COVER IT! Simple as that.
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted October 22, 2002 See, things like this could be avoided if the Establishment were in charge. First I-95, THEN THE WORLD!! And yes, it is almost always done poorly. Fo sheez, Kotzenjunge
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted October 22, 2002 What do we need Michael Jackson for now that we have Justin Timberlake, his young white equivalent?
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted October 22, 2002 heh. oddly enough, I sometimes like the covers more than their version, but it really depends on the song being done and the band doing it. Kinetic, do yourself a favor, and NEVER listen to Godhead's cover of Eleanor Rigby, you'd have a brainerrism. It fucking BLOWS. Worse than Knockin' on Heaven's Door. Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted October 22, 2002 My ex tried to tell me that Godhead's version was SO GREAT because she loves PURE SHIT. Note to self: Next time I see her (if ever), scream "GODHEAD'S VERSION SUCKS COCK!" As for the Justin/Michael thing, there will NEVER be another Michael Jackson, no matter how much our choreographed lame-ass beatboxing white boy tries.
