Chrissakes, we have over 2 million people in the armed forces already. The most pessimistic estimates say that we'd need 200,000 for a full invasion and occupation of Iraq, and I'll personally guarantee that our casualties would be negligible. That means we'll have 90% of our total military strength in reserve even if we do go to war. There's nothing else on the horizon, unfortunately. We barely know what to do with the people we've got. Why the hell would we want to draft anyone?

Unless WWIII breaks out there will be no draft ever again in this country. Iraq is really nothing in terms of military power when compared to us. A draft is unnecessary at this point and would just piss people off. In past wars people volunteered to go then Vietnam changed how many Americans think about war and drafts. That's why the Baby Boomers got rid of the damn thing.

Fortunately for all of us, this thing with Iraq shouldn't drag on long at all. The draft just isn't going to happen, because it won't be worth the political cost. A couple more years, I'll be passed draft age anyway. One of the few bright spots of getting old.

Don't take Vietnam out of its historical context. Circumstances have changed dramatically since the 60's and early 70's both politically and culturally. Some Guy is right. It would take another WWII for the politicians to find the political cost not outwieghing the national interests as far as the draft goes.

As much as I enjoy watching people argue with Marney, I'm afraid I have to agree with her her (::checks outside window to make sure pigs aren't flying by:... I think that anyone who abjectly refuses to support and defend their country should not have any reasonable expectation to be protected by that country. The military isn't for everybody; some people can better serve this country away from the line of fire (or so Marney claims... j/k). But, if you're not even willing to show moral support for this country's armed forces, then please feel free to get the fuck out at your earliest convenience. Stop wasting our resources.

 

That being said, I'm very strongly opposed to the draft; men and women should be willing to place themselves between their home and the desolation of war, and if they have to be told to do so, it's a sign of bad things to come...

How many times do people have to mention that the next conflict the United States gets involved in will be like Vietnam. The U.S. fought the war in the worst possible manner.

 

I agree the draft won't be in place unless its WWIII. The draft might be the least of the problems if that happens.

 

Nezbyte. You think anyone wants to go to war? A soldiers motto is "Train for war, Pray for Peace". Any soldier that as seen combat is scared, but their fighting for your country and are willing to die for your country. Somepeople...yourself included won't join the military, and that's fine. But to immediately say you'd dodge the draft it

if it returns, is a rush to judgment.

You have no idea what kind of war the U.S. would be in, they could kill your family. Sorry for being so harsh, but a war that requires a draft is going to be huge, and your thoughts on the matter might change dramatically.

Anyways...There isnt going to be another "war" with Iraq. There is going to be alot of pointless cockwaving back and forth between Saddam and Bush...(woah...Deja Vu...)...When everyone accepts that these men are Hetero Lifemates then you will all realize that all this crap is just, as one said earlier in this thread, giving our military something to do.

 

Don't you think if the US government was really threatened by Saddam he would be dead long before now? He is no real threat other than the occasional staged terrorist attack, which our government goes along with anyways.
