Guest goodhelmet Report post Posted September 4, 2002 the bottom line is this... from the wwe's standpoint (which i think everyone can agree, vince mcmahon has never shown any class in any situation) how does the gay gimmick help generate interest inside the ring or even make yyou want to watch the product? it doesn't. period. thus, when a race gimmick or homosexual gimmick or nationalist gimmick appears, you have to question the reasoning behind it. how is this beneficial to the wrestlers and the company? all directions point to it NOT being beneficial to anyone. example: saba simba(sic?). that did wonders for tony atlas. hell, booker t is one of the most over wrestlers in the fed today and in wcw in 1998 and race is not the primary focus of his character. you may call it being oversensitive but when the gimmick involved does no good for anybody what is the fucking point? Guest MrRant Report post Posted September 4, 2002 But if it makes me laugh and makes me feel entertained then that is the point.
Guest Dames Edna Report post Posted September 4, 2002 Making jokes means you are being accepted into reality? Are you serious? I wouldn't consider jokes about Natives, Asians, or Latinos flattering...or being any sign of positivity
Guest MrRant Report post Posted September 4, 2002 They are funny. As well as jokes about white trash, Jews, african americans, etc. Like George Carlin said: Its all in the context of the joke.
Guest goodhelmet Report post Posted September 4, 2002 does it entertain you? it doesn't entertain me. and why would you laugh at something that is not funny and spiteful to a particular group of people? booker-goldust... that's funny. the showster... that's funny. billy-chuck- neither funny or entertaining.
Guest MrRant Report post Posted September 4, 2002 I like George Carlin, Sam Kinnison, Richard Pryor etc. They made plenty of spiteful comments about race/creed/religion but it doesn't make them assholes for doing it does it? And yes some gay jokes do entertain me.
Guest Dames Edna Report post Posted September 4, 2002 Well the context of this joke by the WWE is in poor taste - if you want to use that line of thinking.
Guest MrRant Report post Posted September 4, 2002 In your opinion.
Guest El Psycho Diablo Report post Posted September 4, 2002 Eh, but is there really a need for it? When you get down to the basic concept, wrestling is an athletic contest. It should be treated like such. We know it's booked, but does that make it any less of a contest? Or does it make the participants any less an athlete than a football or baseball player? Granted, Wrestling isn't rocket science. A little intelligence goes a long way, though. Take Steve Austin, for example. He did some really wierd stunts..but they were mostly entertaining. (Beer Bath, Zamboni, Limo..etc.) Then take Billy and Chuck. You can tell it's obviously a joke gimmick. Billy Gunn looks miserable as hell with it. If you have to resort for "comedy" gimmicks for more wrestlers than you can count on two hands.. There's a damn problem on the writing team.
Guest MrRant Report post Posted September 4, 2002 I agree. I prefer intense HHH vs. SCSA like feuds than comedic stuff.
Guest El Psycho Diablo Report post Posted September 4, 2002 It dosen't have to be ALL serious..but if you're gonna make sure something is funny, make sure it's ACTUALLY FUNNY. Not "hyuck, hyuck..he's gay.." type of stuff. While I'm sure there may have been people that thought the beer bath, or random stuff Austin did was stupid..I doubt it really offended anyone. Guest goodhelmet Report post Posted September 4, 2002 exactly diablo! hell, everyone could be offended by something but that's not the point. rant, you are claiming that if you find it amusing then it is perfectly acceptable because that is your opinion. well neo-nazis find racism and violence acceptable but in our society that kind of thinking is unacceptable. it's simply a case of right is right and wrong is wrong. Guest MrRant Report post Posted September 4, 2002 But my right is that all groups are open targets and that is probably why I like George Carlin and don't care for the weakness of some groups and their whining about everything under the sun. I say go find a cave and become a hermit if you don't want people saying/doing anything that may slightly offend you since you have no skin whatsoever.
Guest goodhelmet Report post Posted September 4, 2002 so everyone who questions racism and prejusice thought should go crawl in a cave??? that's highly illogical reasoning. when a group points out the flaws of an injust act, if you disagree it's whining. if you happen to agree, it's spreading the truth. hypocrisy rules!!! Guest El Psycho Diablo Report post Posted September 4, 2002 Where I can see both points here.. It still dosen't have any buisness in wrestling. IMO.
Guest Dames Edna Report post Posted September 4, 2002 You are being callous to the millions of homosexual people who most likely will be offended by this. People can make jokes, heck I can make jokes to my friends about it - but my problem is when it is being displayed for everyone to see. It is about consideration for other peoples feelings, or beliefs
Guest MrRant Report post Posted September 4, 2002 Or it could be I just don't give a fuck. I like white jokes, black jokes, gay jokes, all kinds of jokes its all fun for me because most people don't take it seriously. The ones that do are the ones who are trying to control thought... and like George Carlin says those who want to control thought try to control language because people think in language. Prime examples being religion, goverment, NOW, GLAAD, etc.
Guest MrRant Report post Posted September 4, 2002 You are being callous to the millions of homosexual people who most likely will be offended by this. People can make jokes, heck I can make jokes to my friends about it - but my problem is when it is being displayed for everyone to see. It is about consideration for other peoples feelings, or beliefs I'm a callous person because in the fact that its okay by your opinion to say a black joke infront of say an audience but it would be offensive to say a gay joke infront of said audience. Guest Dames Edna Report post Posted September 4, 2002 When did I say it was ok to make a black joke? I said I didn't have a problem with the Nation of Domiantion because they weren't making a joke of the race. It wasn't a group put together to make a limited amount of people laugh
Guest El Psycho Diablo Report post Posted September 4, 2002 ..and isn't it generally accepted that DOA and the Nation were flops?
Guest MrRant Report post Posted September 4, 2002 But... if you don't have problem with a joke made at the expense of blacks then don't have one made at the expense of gays.
Guest Dames Edna Report post Posted September 4, 2002 They were never made to be a joke! No joke was made at their expense...at all
Guest MrRant Report post Posted September 4, 2002 Sorry I read that wrong my apologies. But there are straight sex jokes and jokes even about sex with underaged girls on WWE TV (LAWLER). If I don't see you writing a letter campaign about that then why would gay jokes offend you more?
Guest Dames Edna Report post Posted September 4, 2002 Lawler is a jackass - and personally, and quite honestly I don't pay attention to what he has to say. As I said earlier, I have a problem with how the ladies are portrayed on WWE TV. I don't think anyone should be put in such an embarrassing predictament as a pillow fight for Vince's wacking off amusement
Guest MrRant Report post Posted September 4, 2002 But are you writing letters? Are you informing NOW to start sending in the troops? If you are going to take up for one cause then take up for them all is what I'm trying to get across.
Guest Dames Edna Report post Posted September 4, 2002 I am not going to start any campaign...in fact I personally am not THAT bothered. My main problem is with the WWE completely alienating their fans, and pissing off a large minority of people with this angle. They know what they are doing is wrong, but they are doing it for ratings.
Guest MrRant Report post Posted September 4, 2002 Its the business. Its always been like that for television.
Guest Dames Edna Report post Posted September 4, 2002 Its what business? I don't think I follow. Should the WWE exploit child kidnapping because its a hot topic in society today? There are boundries, they have to know what they are. Thats my point
Guest MrRant Report post Posted September 4, 2002 Television. Fox News/MSNBC/CNN exploit child kidnapping for ratings.
Guest Dames Edna Report post Posted September 4, 2002 But atleast people are learning about it - getting the information. They can prepare themselves so the same thing won't happen to them. News and entertainment are 2 different things.
