Who is the better Wrestler?

Recommended Posts

Guest BionicRedneck

When the question "Who is the better wrestler?" was asked I saw it as who was the better worker in the ring. Thats easily Benoit.

Yes, Angle is a better "Sports Entertainer" but I dunno about better athlete. He is in terms of his athletic acheivements (Gold medals) but that don't mean jack in Pro wrestling. In pro wrestling a great athlete shouldn't get winded like Angle has been known to. I don't recall many times when Benoit has been blown-up.

I agree, BR. When I saw the question, I was assuming that it referred to who was the better in-ring worker and not certain things like "sports entertainer" and miscellaneous other crap.

Chris Benoit is not a better athlete than a guy only six years removed from an Olympic gold medal.

Erm...I know, I said that.

My point was, Angle being a great olympic athlete don't matter jackshit if he gets blown-up in a wrestling ring. That don't happen to Benoit.

Pretty cut and dried, if you ask me.

um... you forgot

better psychology,

better strikes,

better moveset,

better pacing,

better ring leadership

-in all of these categories, benoit is head and shoulders above angle. so i guess you are right on one thing, it is pretty cut and dried. benoit is the better wrestler without a doubt.

Dear god, this is like comparing Pepsi and Coke on this board.

Yes, Benoit is a better wrestler.

And yes, Angle has that "Star" something that Benoit doesn't.

Let's just be happy they'll be working with each other instead of teaming up against Rikishi and Randy Orton or something.

Benoit is the best wrestler in North America today, hands down. The only other option you really have is Guerrero. Now, maybe if you like that sports entertainment mic work deal, Angle might be for you, but man better than Benoit? Give me a break. Seriously. Angle has one match, and the only thing that allows him to deviate from that match is if he is with a superior storyteller. Take any of the Angle/Edge's or the Angle/Cena match. They were all the same match, just he did some better than others and others went longer. Not to say it's not an entertaining match; but that's all it is. Entertaining. It's not deep, it's not epic, it's not jaw-droppingly great. Lets put it this way, when you can't go out into a ring and work a match better than *** on a PPV with Rey F'n Misterio, you are not the greatest wrestler in North America. With Rey he wrestled the same match that he was with everyone else outside of Benoit and Austin.

The only thing you could possibly argue that Angle does better than Benoit in the ring is bump, and I would beg to differ but I could see an argument being made there. Angle's selling while convincing is very inconsistent and ends up meaning nothing (much like The Rock's), while Benoit fucking puts on a show and makes every move meaningful. Besides that, Angle's match would only work in WWE, outside he'd have to be carried. Benoit can work any match, anywhere and have it be fresh every time, I know that because every match of Benoit's I have seen has had suprises, or a slightly different tone.

And, Benoit/Sasuke overated? Come on, that match is on par with anything North America has ever produced. For your own sake, I really suggest watching that match with an open mind; it's boggling how amazing the work in that match was. It's a true classic that will stand the test of time, and be remembered as arguably ( I said arguably, harrr no need to defend your favourite match) the best juniors/lightweight/cruiserweight match ever preformed. And that's just one example of a classic match Benoit has been in, there are many more in a wide variety of contries and styles. In my eyes Angle's only classic matches have been with Benoit and Steve Austin.

I think it's clear-cut Benoit is on a whole other echelon above Angle in the ring, but Angle is a whole echelon above Benoit on the mic. However, Angle is great and probably the number one all-time wrestler on the greatness scale for the limited amount of time he has wrestled, and whichever one is your favourite is completely up to you, for whatever reason.

I just wanted to add:

Rey motherfucking fucking Mysterio Jr. who's in his prime and in full Ricky Morton mode. Damn, I'm Rey Rey pimping all over the place lately.

Anyways, that's how I see it too. Just beautiful.

Benoit, hands down.

Oh, and what's this "Angle is a better sports entertainer" bullshit? Call me old school, but I watch wrestling on TV. When somebody calls me up, I don't say "I can't go out, I'm watching sports entertainment."

Chris Benoit is a better pro wrestler. Better movelist, better psychology, better selling, more intense, more physical and he simply posseses that "Fuck you, I'm going to hurt you if I want" attitude that Angle doesn't have. Until the WWE pushes Angle as a serious guy, he'll always be an extremely talented goofball in my book. Benoit is no-nonsense, balls to the wall, fuck you up like a prison bitch kinda guy.

Stick Angle in Japan and Mexico, let's see how he fares there. That's not a jab at him, I'd just like to see how well he can stand up in places where the averages are over 10 minutes and the fans actually expect their wrestlers to be talented.

I'll put it this way. If you take wrestling for what it is, Angle is better. He's good enough in the ring, has great mic skills, has a versatile person in my opinion.....

If you still think wrestling is a sport, Benoit is better LOL

I think what Psycho Diablo is trying to say for all the styles that Benoit can or may be able to wrestle... he really doesn't use those skills anymore. There's nothing in Benoit's matches now that reflects his J-Cup experience, so why even bring it up? Benoit basically sticks to the WWE style of punchy, kicky, with a few spots thrown in here and there.

I'm gonna go with Angle. That man carry anything to a good match and (this is where he beats Benoit hands down) can cut a great promo too.

Benoit's brawling is generally stiffer and more convincing than anyone else's, him and eddie put the Southern Tag style match to better use than anyone else, and when he has to totally, flat out carry someone, he can work a total chain style match where everything except submission moves is in constant flow.

I'd even argue that Benoit is probably the only non-WWE style worker on the roster. Maybe Mysterio too.

For a style based on brawling, Benoit's the best brawler on the roster.

Umm....why does it matter if Angle has better mic skills. The question is who is a better wrestler. That has nothing to do with mic skill. Benoit was over huge before he got hurt and he still couldn't cut a promo. People place WAAAAY to much importance on that fluffy SE bullshit.

And is it just me or does it seem some people are anti-Benoit just to go against the norm? They really have no reason for disliking him they just do it because it's different than what other people think. Reminds me of those people who will go on and on about how a band sucks despite hearing like one of there songs just because everyone else likes them.

I don't know about that, Benoit chops and kicks perfectly fine, but his punches are pretty weak since he usually doesn't get his whole body behind them. Benoit's carrying ability is a bit overrated in my veiw since he doesn't seem to get really get good matches out of the subpar opponents like he used to, but he certainely does have excellent matches with other good wrestlers and usually dictates the pace of those matches. I'm not sure how you can say he doesn't work a WWE style though.

Billy and Chuck also put on a damn fine Southern tag match in my opinion, and Rico is also able to play his role of running interfearence to a Tee.

Granted, strikes would be splitting hairs, but saying the same about psychology, pacing, ring leadership, and (to a lesser extent) moveset when determining who is a better wrestler is ridiculous.

I think I'm a lot more critical of Benoit due to the number of people that want to have his children and don't seem to want to engage in any sort of (even constructive) critical debate about the man. A lot of the defenses seem to be a variation on the following argument...

"He's really good."

While both accurate and appropriate, that really doesn't add a whole lot to discussion and the vertible sea of that comment you have to wade through just to say anything about Benoit can leave me rather perturbed. Ergo, the larger amount of Benoit bilke that I have.
