Guest Strike Force! Report post Posted September 6, 2002 Benoit was over huge before he got hurt and he still couldn't cut a promo. I didn't think he was that over. I mean, he wasn't greeted with a bunch of silent apathy by the audience, but he didn't get loud pops from the crowd either. Also, I think you assume too much. I can only speak for myself, but I don't dislike Benoit. I just play devil's advocate. There's nothing really distignuishable about him, yet the internet makes him out to be the greatest thing since ::cliche alert:: sliced bread. I'm sorry, but in my opinion, he's not any better than Arn Anderson, Barry Windham, Tully Blanchard, Jake Roberts, Ted DiBiase, Brad Armstrong, Mr. Wrestling II...he's not better than any of those guys. Guest BionicRedneck Report post Posted September 6, 2002 You are entitled to your opinion and I respect that, now here is mine... Chris Benoit can wrestle rings around those guys. Jake Roberts was a great character, but a great worker? hmmm, I'm not so sure. Benoit was very over in 00/01 in WWE, all the time in ECW, Japan and he was crazy over in WCW from around 96 onwards. When the title is "Who is the better wrestler?" it really is a no contest. If it were "Who is the better Sports Entertainer?" then maybe Angle. But, realistically Benoit has been at the top of the game (wrestling wise) for a decade, Angle has wrestled pro since 99. Benoit has had the following matches that are better than any Angle match by a mile... Benoit Vs Great Sasuke, Super J Cup Benoit/Ohtani Vs Sasuke/Guerrero Benoit Vs Guerrero, BOSJ 95 Benoit Vs El Samurai, BOSJ 93 Actually there is a lot more than that, but I can't be assed. Angle is a great entertainer, and fits in very well to the WWE style, but I don't recall any genuine CLASSIC matches other than against Austin at SummerSlam. Lets remember Angle has many years left in him, he is awesome considering he has only wrestled in the big leagues since 99, but suggesting he is a better pure wrestler than Benoit (probably one of the top 5 ever) is a little nuts to me. Guest Brian Report post Posted September 6, 2002 "I don't know about that, Benoit chops and kicks perfectly fine, but his punches are pretty weak since he usually doesn't get his whole body behind them. Benoit's carrying ability is a bit overrated in my veiw since he doesn't seem to get really get good matches out of the subpar opponents like he used to, but he certainely does have excellent matches with other good wrestlers and usually dictates the pace of those matches. I'm not sure how you can say he doesn't work a WWE style though. Billy and Chuck also put on a damn fine Southern tag match in my opinion, and Rico is also able to play his role of running interfearence to a Tee." Benoit's punches make good contact and I'd rather have that than the Rock throwing all his body weight for a big slap (and I *heart* the rock). If we're talking about lately, I think Benoit still isn't bumping up to full speed and really the only sub-quality opponent he's had since coming back was Bubba who he'd really have to bump for. By WWE style, I mean where punches and kicks are used as filler to make up for the lack of moves, where brawling is filler in a match, where missed clothesline tak on the role of primary transition between opponents offense, where long-term selling is sometimes sacrificed to keep the crowd happy, and where pacing between matches is eerily similar. They actually do make a very nice Southern tag team, Billy and Chuck. I forgot about them. Benoti/Regal, Pillman Show 2000, Bionic Redneck. Better match than anything the WWE has had in the last five years.
