Top ten grossing movies of the week

Recommended Posts

Guest Youth N Asia

1. Sweet Home Alabama ($ 37.5/$ 37.5)

2. The Tuxedo ($ 15.1/$ 15.1)

3. Barbershop ($ 10.1/$ 51.4)

4. My Big Fat Greek Wedding ($ 9.8/$ 137.0)

5. The Banger Sisters ($ 5.4/$ 18.8)

6. The Four Feathers ($ 3.6/$ 12.4)

7. One Hour Photo ($ 3.0/$ 26.1)

8. Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever ($ 2.7/$ 11.5)

9. Signs ($ 2.3/$ 221.1)

10. Swimfan ($ 1.5/$ 26.6)

Could Four Feathers be considered a bomb? This movie was being billed as this huge epic and all and it's not making the huge dollars.

I like the fact Ballastic ($70 mil to make) is in the crapper. And thank God the Tuxedo only made $15 mil...

I think Ballistic is the final nail in Banderas' coffin as far as reaching the potential everyone said he had with Desperado.

The Four Feathers looked like it was around 20 million to make from the commericals. IMDB doesn't have any data on that so I don't know.

And why the hate for the Tuxedo? You can't not love Jackie. I think this was the first Chan movie to bombed in the States. Hope this doesn't hurt him too bad.

Didn't Twin Dragons bomb?

And really I wouldn't call the Tuxedo a bomb (even though I have NO interest in seeing it)...September is not a strong movie month...I think that Sweet Home Alabama actually set the record for a movie opening in September...or set the record for a comedy in Sept or something...something like that anyway

That Balistic movie just didn't look good at all though.

I like Jackie -- I got Rush Hour I and II in my DVD collection, but this movie looks soooo stupid...

I'm getting sick of My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

My friend has had it at his theater since friggin June and it's still bringing crowds...

Ahem....as an avid Jennifer Love Hewitt fan, I am proud to say I saw the movie. It wasn't great, but DAMN she made it worth it to me. Jackie Chan isn't that great comedy wise if he doesn't have someone comedic to play off of.

I've just got to ask one thing...how the HELL did Sweet Home Alabama make that much?

I actually think that it's very impressive that it's done so well. It's not gonna win any Oscars, but it's good fun. If you haven't seen it, you should.

Well, to use a wrestling term, Reese Witherspoon has been pushed to main event status and is now a legitimate box office draw.

Dames: Two words as to why that movie made money: Legally Blonde.

Greek Wedding: I hear they are making it into a sitcom and the sequel "Honeymoon in Greece" is being written.

It will get nominated...but my pick for movie of the year goes to whatever the name of the Spielberg/HAnks movie coming out is.

I hate them both...but I pick it to win best picture.

Every year I pick the winner without seeing it...and I haven't been wrong since the "Shakespeare in Love" upset.

It's the only real "date movie" that's available at the moment (besides MBFGW). Also, they marketed it well, and Witherspoon is a bankable star.

Get Carter.

Driven.

3000 Miles To Graceland.

Battlefield Earth.

Just a few of the absolute bombs on producer Elie Samaha's resume'. His latest: Ballistic: Ecks vs Sever. It was doomed from the start and alot of big name talent (Chow Yun Fat, Jet Li & Wesley Snipes, Vin Diesel & Sly Stallone) had the good sense to recognise it and backed out early. This guy just does not have a good track record.

Not to mention some unproven Thai talent, Kaos, is directing. And moving a picture's release date back and forth to try to avoid ANY and ALL competition is never good. I mean, when you're trying to avoid going head-to-head with a movie co-starring Jennifer Love Hewitt aka Box Office Poison (contrary to popular opinion and Dames' blind fan worship, this girl ain't shit...ask her about the Audrey Hepburn biopic she filmed) ...you should probably just go ahead and cut your losses and shelve the friggin' project.

You can't lose any more money then you were going to already. Or any more money than ANY JLH project. With JLH at the theaters I can see why a Reese Witherspoon joint is doing phenomenal numbers. My HOME movies would probably set records when put up against that no-talent hack who dares call herself an "actress". Fucking b00bs on a stick more like it.

Um, where do you get that?

Movies over $100M 0

Total Number of Movies 11

Total Number of Movies (starring) 7

Avg Gross of each movie (starring) $25,411,571

Total Gross of All Movies $242,175,795

Avg. Gross of each Movie $22,015,981

Avg Gross of Movies in the 90s $20,184,180

Avg. Gross of the Last 10 movies $24,217,580

Reese Witherspoon, Ms. "Box Office Draw", grossed LESS per movie with MORE starring roles.

And from what I understand, that Hepburn TV movie did rather well.

The Tuxedo isn't great, but that's because of the crappy script and awful direction, not the stars.

But the real difference between Witherspoon and Hewitt is that Witherspoon plays a different role in every movie. Freeway, Cruel Intentions...

Plus, very few of Reese's movies have actually been teen movies/chick flicks. Cruel Intentions, albeit marketed as one, is NOT, because if the characters were all in their 30's, the movie would still be as good.

Mmmmm...Freeway...I need to see that again...

True, and with her last two movies (Heartbreakers and The Tuxedo), Hewitt is starting to move out of that "teen actress" mold.

Hell, she's only 23, which is only about 4 years older than me.

Are those Witherspoon's stats or JLH's ? If they are Hewitt's,I'm hard pressed to think of seven movies she even was in...let alone the star of

JLH is a gimmick actress, while Whitherspoon actually has talent.

JLH's role in movies is as follows: "Hey, I look like a teenager who just grew giant breasts. Excuse me while I bend over infront of the camera while wearing a low cut top."

Sure, not every role is like that, but her tits play a big part in why she get's work, cuz it sure ain't her talent.

Who cares.

JLH has One hit to her name and the rest have been BOMBS.

Anyway,

Next Week:

The Transporter!!

Jason Statham rules!

Sure it's her talent - all two of them. :P

I agree with you though. She gets pretty exposed (no pun intended) when she's the lead actress or is grouped with a bunch of bad ones (or both, in the case of the Last Summer movies). When she's a minor lead her weaknesses are better protected, so she can show some cleavage and we go home happy.

Say what you will about JLH, but I can think of one actress that's "worse".

Demi Moore.

Can anyone name me ONE movie she's borderline decent in (except Ghost)?

Seriously, I'm sure most people go to her movies just to find out if she gets naked.

Can't Hardly Wait ($25M)

I hardly consider that a "starring" role for JLH, she had the fewest lines of anyone in that movie and comparitively little screen time.

Damn, the two nerdy Boys on the Roof were in the Movie more than JLH.

"I can't feel my legs!!"

BTW, The Transporter looks to kickass up to a Snatch level, except that Snatch was R, which gave it more to work with with crude humor and whatnot.

Can't Hardly Wait is actually one of my favorite movies.

As for the whole JLH thing, Tuxedo was billed more as a Jackie Chan movie than one of hers, so all of your arguments are pretty much moot.
