EL DANDY~! Posted October 2, 2002 Report Posted October 2, 2002 IS Jyushin "Thunder" Lyger the greatest Junior of all time??? I'd say he is one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, since he did so much to make it really big in Japan.
Guest wolverine Posted October 2, 2002 Report Posted October 2, 2002 He most definitely is. And if you need evidence, check out Liger-Sammy 4/92. Just awesome, man.
Guest RickyChosyu Posted October 2, 2002 Report Posted October 2, 2002 Considering Sammy's ability as a worker at the time, that may be the single greatest one man show I've ever seen. What a match.
Guest cynicalprofit Posted October 3, 2002 Report Posted October 3, 2002 Id say yes, but what about sasuke...ive never seen him in a bad match, but i havent seen a whole lot of him.
Guest DragonflyKid Posted October 3, 2002 Report Posted October 3, 2002 I haven't seen enough of his stuff yet but from what I have seen and what I have read and heard from others is that he is the best. I do have his two '97 Ohtani matches coming my way(hopefully) as well as a 4-hour comp of his early stuff. BEST OF JUSHIN LIGER (Video is VG/EX) Keichi Yamada vs Nobuhiko Takada, 8/87 (Clipped) KEICHI YAMADA VS HIROSHI HASE, 2/15/88 Keichi Yamada vs Owen Hart, 6/11/88 (JIP) KEICHI YAMADA VS SHIRO KOSHINAKA, 12/24/88 (JIP) KEICHI YAMADA & SHIRO KOSHINAKA VS OWEN HART & MARK ROCCO, 9/8/87 Keichi Yamada vs Owen Hart Jushin Liger vs Kuniaki Kobayashi, 4/29/89 (Debut of Liger gimmick) Jushin Liger vs Hiroshi Hase, 5/27/89 (JIP) Jushin Liger vs Shiro Koshinaka, 6/10/89 (JIP) Jushin Liger vs Black Tiger (not Guerrero), 7/15/89 (Clipped) JUSHIN LIGER VS NAOKI SANO, 7/22/89 (JIP) Jushin Liger vs Akira Nogami, 7/29/89 Jushin Liger & Akira Nogami vs Naoki Sano & Hoshino, 8/12/89 JUSHIN LIGER VS NAOKI SANO, 8/89 (Sano wins IWGP jr title) JUSHIN LIGER VS NAOKI SANO, 9/30/89 (JIP) Jushin Liger vs Takayuki Iizuka, 11/4/89 (JIP) Keichi Yamada vs Shoichi Funaki, 12/27/87 (Clipped) JUSHIN LIGER VS NAOKI SANO, 1/30/90 (Clipped - 1990 Match of the Year - Liger wins IWGP jr title - Sano destroys Liger's mask during match - very cool!) Jushin Liger & Akira Nogami vs Naoki Sano & Wild Pegasus, 2/17/90 (JIP) Jushin Liger vs Owen Hart, 2/24/90
Guest RickyChosyu Posted October 3, 2002 Report Posted October 3, 2002 Nope. Good flyer, but his work was often spotty and he was unable to carry anyone on his own. Probably the most carriable wrestlers I've ever seen, but I wouldn't even rank him in the same league as Lyger, Ohtani Benoit, Ultimo, and others.
Guest Tim Cooke Posted October 3, 2002 Report Posted October 3, 2002 Sasuke = an easy carry person. Liger = the guy who can carry anyone. Tim
Guest wolverine Posted October 3, 2002 Report Posted October 3, 2002 You want the 2/9/97 Ohtani match, but the classic one is 3/17/96. I rewatched this last month and it completely blew me away. Absolutely terrific performances by both men. Ohtani in '96 should be near the top of people's Must See lists.
Guest Tim Cooke Posted October 3, 2002 Report Posted October 3, 2002 Otani 1996 made me a fan of Puro was back when. Too bad he never grew up properly. Tim
EL DANDY~! Posted October 3, 2002 Author Report Posted October 3, 2002 I'm glad you all agree with me. It was either him, Sasuke, or Ohtani, so I needed somebody to step up and say whether he was. Thanks, doods...
Guest wolverine Posted October 3, 2002 Report Posted October 3, 2002 Sasuke doesn't come close in my book. Go watch some 80's Takada.
Guest Tim Cooke Posted October 3, 2002 Report Posted October 3, 2002 Go watch any Takada. The only Juniors matches that are MUST see's are: 4/92 Liger v Sammy 4/94 Benoit v Sasuke 1/96 Otani v Sammy 3/96 Otani v Liger 6/96 Benoit v Eddy 8/96 Dragon v Otani 2/97 Liger v Otani 3/96 Rey v Juve AAA Tijuana Maybe one of the great Mpro 10 mans but beyond that, Juniors stuff is not mandatory at all. Tim
Guest wolverine Posted October 3, 2002 Report Posted October 3, 2002 You should add Rey vs. Eddy Havoc '97 to that list.
EL DANDY~! Posted October 3, 2002 Author Report Posted October 3, 2002 Also add the Cibernetico 16-man classic from EMLL if you wanna talk about stuff like that...that's a forgotten one...and in all reality, Lyger was the man who MADE the juniors, but he is ALSO the one who made the people around him better.
Guest Tim Cooke Posted October 3, 2002 Report Posted October 3, 2002 Eh, the Cibernetico is okay but flashy matwork for no purpose does nothing for me... But Lucha isnt my expertise either so who knows. Tim (Eddy/Rey is worthy as well)
Guest wolverine Posted October 3, 2002 Report Posted October 3, 2002 Chris Jericho had a ***3/4 match with Ultimo Dragon on 7/7/95, so you might want that if you're a Jericho fan. It's his best match ever.
Guest Tim Cooke Posted October 3, 2002 Report Posted October 3, 2002 i cant stand Jericho for the most part. But that match is pretty good...all due to Dragon. But there is so much else to see before you would need to track down that match. Tim
Guest RickyChosyu Posted October 3, 2002 Report Posted October 3, 2002 I'd agree that 7/95 is Jericho's best match ever, with 12/95 vs. Benoit being somewhere behind that. I'd also agree with Tim's list of essential juniors matches, though I have yet to see Liger/Ohtani 3/96, Benoit/Guererro 6/96, and Misterio/Guererra 3/96. I'm looking to see those soon, though. And though it might be a bit of stretch, I think Liger/Sano 1/90 is a great look into how Jushin would take form as a worker later and just an awesome match in general. I wouldn't go so far as to call it essential, but the entire Liger/Sano feud is really stellar work and made me appreciate Liger all the more.
Guest Tim Cooke Posted October 3, 2002 Report Posted October 3, 2002 Liger/Sano is worthy too look at for non Junior reasons. I would watch it to see how a moved base/body part feud is built properly with the final payoff being more than rewarding. I wish Liger was a heavyweight and wrestled for AJPW. If he did, I can only imagine how good he would be. He has a fabulous mind for wrestling and booking. Tim
Guest XdojimeX Posted October 3, 2002 Report Posted October 3, 2002 Where's the Norio Honaga love? That Lyger comp is great btw (Barnett creation?). You get the whole early Yamada into Liger progression in a tight 4 hr package. The Sano feud is the capper, but you get nifty early gems like the Funaki match (the great lost pro-wrestler prodigy), Takada, Koshinaka, Hase etc. where you can see the potential coming out of the guys ears. Just a phenom for the time. Guess he did alright for himself.
Guest Lord of The Curry Posted October 4, 2002 Report Posted October 4, 2002 Yes he is. Normally I'd put up my defences and argue for Benoit, but I bow to Lyger. The man is a God.
Guest Special K Posted October 4, 2002 Report Posted October 4, 2002 Objectively: 1. Lyger 2. Benoit 3.. ohtani Subjectively, Ohtani is my favorite wrestler to watch. Keep in mind I haven't seen near enough TMI
Guest Black Tiger Posted October 4, 2002 Report Posted October 4, 2002 I can't say for certain, because wrestlers acts get old as time goes on. When I first saw Lyger I thought he was a god, but then I just got sick of him and his appeal wore off. I'd say its either Lyger, Benoit, or Dynamite Kid.
