I'm going with the opening 5 minutes of Full Metal Jacket. The best uses of profanity ever captured on film.

Favorite Scene ever: Slap Shot Paul Newman circling the opposing goalie chanting "Your wife's a lesbian, a lesbian, she's a lesbian."

 

Favorite single shot ever: The Natural Roy Hobbs rounding first the camera behind him with the lighting, the angle, the fireworks going off in the backgroung was just perfect.

True Romance has 3 mindblowing scenes that could be included in anyone's top scenes list:

 

1. Clarence's confrontation with the psychotic Drexel (Gary Oldman as a wigger pimp!)....just an awesome scene that will be indeliby etched in your mind.

 

2. The above mentioned Walken/Hopper interrogation scene with Hopper's rant on Sicilian history ("Sicilians were spawned by niggers!").

 

3. The very disturbing James Gandolfini/Patricia Arquette scene where he beats the crap out of her in very realistic fashion.

this is like picking a favorite song ever, my tastes come and go. i'll spout off whatever are my favorites at the moment, in order:

 

1. the puppet show in 'the 400 blows': saw it on the original print a couple nights ago, and this scene just floored me. it was basically just a group of kids' faces, watching a puppet show, but all the details in what they were doing (laughing, chewing on their hands, fidgeting), and the collective expression of wonder on their faces was priceless. people were laughing during it, not because it was really funny, just because it was so beautiful. i can't do it justice in words.

 

2. sex scene in the desert from 'lost highway': best use of any song in a movie. 'song to the siren' perfectly suits it in lyrics and in music, fluid and ethereal and gorgeous. the whiteness & the softness of patricia arquette (and her titties) just work so well with it.

 

3. musical number from 'magnolia': enough other people on the board have seen this that i don't need to explain it.

 

4. scotty approaching judy as madeline in 'vertigo'. everything was building up to that moment & the payoff was amazing.

 

i'll probably go back & edit this later, as it was kind of thrown together.

 

and i think kevin smith should be banned from all "greatest scene" discussions for his complete lack of any visual sense whatsoever.

I consider the best scene ever to be the ending of Blade Runner when Roy gives the speech on the roof at the end while holding the dove, then dies. I still get goosebumps when I watch that scene.

-The end shot of the Searchers with John Wayne's silloute shot through the doorway as everyone else runs inside to "civilization" and he has to stay in the "wilderness."

 

-The "fill your hands" scene from True Grit.

 

-The ferris wheel scene from The Third Man. Joseph Cotton and Orson Welles show the most dynamic chemistry I have ever seen between two people on screen. It also has the very witty "Cuckoo Clock" speech at the end of that which Welles wrote himself.

 

-The Singing in the Rain number from Singing in the Rain. A lot of Kelly's stuff was a little to artsy and esoteric for it's own good, but this was a perfectly staged and performed musical number.

 

-Nicolas Cage attempting to steal Huggies in Raising Arizona and the chase that follows.

 

-The first time you see Bela Lugosi as Dracula in Dracula. It's a tracking shot of the basement and he's just standing next to his coffin with a candleabra in his hand with such a demonic looks on his face. Sets the whole movie and is still scary.

 

-My favorite shot is the one in Color of Money where you see Paul Newman's reflection in the cue ball as he lines up the shot. That's creative cinematography.

Akira: The ENTIRE ENDING, from when Tetsuo goes into the stadium, is the MUTHERFUCKING ENDING TO END ALL ENDINGS. UN-REAL (because it is! )

 

Already mentioned that Godfather scene...Oh, I'm a stickler for that part in Clerks, too, but you forgot to mention after the "Don't suck any dick on your way to you car" part, the dood that walks after his gf, so Dante says, "HEY! Get back here!!!"

 

From Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back: When they get to that mini-mart in Missouri or something like that...that entire scene cracks me up, and also, I LOVE LOVE LOVE when they try to get away from the cops at the little diner in the desert ("This is our gay adopted lovechild..."), and then after they get away, Will Ferrel is like, "FUCK! That was them, wasn't it...)

 

Fine, a Drama movie: What about...oh, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN? I got to show the first twenty minutes of that in my US History class back in high school as a part of my A+ presentation on D-Day. Greatest beginning to a movie I've ever seen...

The end of Apocalypse Now is really powerful, when Martin Sheen stands up in front of all the Cambodians and they bow down before him. It sums up how evil war is, and how it effects the pysche of anyone involved in it - civilian or soldier.

I have never understood the fascination with the Pacino Scarface. The original is half as long, twice as good, and covers the same stuff....and just as many people die.

 

Speaking of old gangster movies, Cagney has a bunch that rank among the best scenes ever:

 

--In Public Enemy (1931) Cagney shoots it out at the end with a bunch of guys, staggers out wounded, says "I ain't so tough," then falls in the gutter. I don't especially like that movie but that whole ending was great.

 

--Angels With Dirty Faces (1938), Cagney feigns cowardice as he is going to the chair, it's one of the most stunning death scenes ever.

 

--Roaring Twenties (1939), Cagney shoots it out with everyone and then is shot down and dies on the snowy church steps. Seriously, this one left me in tears when I saw it the first time when I was about 11.

 

--White Heat (1949): Top of the World, Ma! Need I say more?

The opening scene in "Halloween".

 

The ending sequence in "Heat".

 

The ending sequence in "Blade Runner", from Hauer's speech right until the end credits.

 

The endings to "Witchfinder General", "Aguirre - the Wrath of God", "The Wicker Man" and "Throne of Blood".

 

The opening to "Suspiria".

 

Though I haven't seen it in ages, I remember being absolutely stunned by the long take that opens "Touch of Evil".

 

The "reunion" scene in "Raging Bull".

 

Jack Nicholson and Grady in the bathroom and the chase through the maze in "The Shining".

 

Mifune and another samurai trying to rescue the family from the burning mill in "The Seven Samurai".

 

Peter Sellers' conversation with the russian PM in "Dr Strangelove".
