Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted October 13, 2002 So, I was looking for Scarface on DVD at Hollywood Video the other day, and find they don't have it. No biggie, I'll just check online, right? Well, I check Amazon and find its out of print, so I have to buy it second-hand, and although its no OOP Criterion DVD (thank goodness), its still too pricey for me to pick up. Why is a movie this great and popular OOP on DVD? What are some other favorite movies with DVDs that are OOP?
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted October 13, 2002 They Live.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted October 13, 2002 Well for fairly popular movies OOP usually means a new version will come out before long. Hopefully the shitty Goodfellas DVD goes OOP soon.
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted October 13, 2002 I hope so... but Scarface has been out of print for a few years now, hasn't it? Amazon lists its original release date as March 31, 1998!
Guest Kingpk Report post Posted October 13, 2002 Is the original ID4 DVD still around? The 2 disc set with all the special features, not the widescreen one.
Guest ISportsFan Report post Posted October 13, 2002 They Live. That's the first one that popped into my mind. Jason

Well that doesn't tell you anything about when it went OOP.
Guest Karnage Report post Posted October 13, 2002 I hate when Criterion titles are OOP. They just go from pricey to even more pricier. Hard Boiled And The Killer are OOP.
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted October 14, 2002 Another one that I just remembered is Elite Entertainment's Uncle Sam DVD... man that is SO expensive now. I wonder if they can reissue it now that A-Pix went under. Is there any way to find out who owns the rights to certain movies?

To bad it's supposed to be a horror movie.

The Dames 0 Report post Posted October 14, 2002 Oye chico. The Scarface DVD is out of print because Universal is going to come out with a special 20th anniv. edition next year. Will I be double dipping? Oh, hell yes. It will be the only DVD I own that I'll have two copies of. Dames

Will I be double dipping? Oh, hell yes. It will be the only DVD I own that I'll have two copies of. Dames Ahh, OK. That's definitely cool with me. I believe They Live is getting a re-release eventually as well. Well... since I have no problems admitting I created this thread entirely with Scarface in mind, any preliminary list/rumors of what's going to be on the special edition? Any other movies besides that one, They Live, and Uncle Sam that anyone knows or is particularly irked about?
The Dames 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2002 They are going to clean up the transfer a bit as its pretty grainy. All they have now is a Making Of featurette, so they could add tons of stuff. I'm keeping the old version because that's the way it was shown in theaters....all grainy and shit. Dames
Guest Dmann2000 Report post Posted October 15, 2002 The Collector's Edition 2-disc set of A Bug's Life. It was pricey and I kept putting off getting it and now it's gone and you have to pay even more to find a copy. It sucks
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted October 15, 2002 Well since a new version is coming soon, i may just have to ebay my old copy off. :runs off to check ebay prices:
The Dames 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2002 The 2-disc limited edition of the original Halloween. The 2nd disc contains the extra Extended version that has the scenes added for TV. Now that its out of print, Anchor Bay has the Extended Version out as its own DVD, but I don't want to own 2 versions of the same movie...except for Scarface. Guest Lethargic Report post Posted October 15, 2002 I'm like that with Halloween as well. I'd like to have Halloween on DVD just because...you know...it's Halloween. But I don't want to own two of one movie and I already own that special widescreen VHS Halloween that comes with the special box and the kick ass Myers snowglobe. I don't want to sell that so I just keep putting off the DVD. Speaking of the OOP things. Is there something up with the Total Recall special edition that comes in the tin can? For some reason I went to the used store and got it for only 9 dollars. That seemed really cheap. This same store had They Live for 40 and Hard Boiled for 60. Not that Total Recall is hard to find but it's in a tin case dammit! I also got Invasion of the Blood Farmers and Rats - A Night of Terror. I also finally found Reindeer Games the director's cut. Been trying to find that forever. I want those extra nude shots of Charlize dammit!
The Dames 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2002 That's a really good price for the tin can Total Recall, Lethargic. I noticed that it was the "limited edition" version and I've already seen its regular sized DVD replacement. Also, Lethargic, you should really invest in the Halloween DVD. NOT the extended version though.....but the video quality is THX approved and it really does look better than it EVER has. Dames
Guest Kagato Otaku Report post Posted October 15, 2002 The Collector's Edition 2-disc set of A Bug's Life. It was pricey and I kept putting off getting it and now it's gone and you have to pay even more to find a copy. It sucks Dmann - the 2-disc Bug's Life is available at plenty of online retailers at a lower price than the market square value. DVD Planet and Digital Eyes have it in stock frequently, with the latter selling for $31.99 (Planet sells it cheaper, but are currnetly out of stock). You may begin splurging.....now. Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted October 15, 2002 OK, so on the subject of the Halloween disc... is the "extended version" THX-approved digitally remastered? Is the "normal version"? I know the "normal version" first disc of the 2-disc LE was... are the two versions available currently the same as those two discs, just split up? This is more confusing than all the releases of Night of the Living Dead...
Guest C.H.U.D. Report post Posted October 15, 2002 Anchor Bay is releasing another Halloween DVD next year, with all the features from the last release, along with some new stuff, including a commentary from Carpenter and Curtis. AB is milking the Halloween rights for all they are worth!
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted October 15, 2002 I have... Halloween 2 disc limited edition Hellraiser 1 and 2 limited edition tin case boxset Evil Dead II limited edition tin case Repo Man/Repo Man soundtrack limited edition tin case boxset. All of those are out print, but you can still find a few Repo Man ones left. Next I'm getting The Wicker Man wooden box limited edition which should be going OOP soon if it isn't already. Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted October 15, 2002 OK, so buying Halloween right now is a no no? Got it. You're damn right AB screws with us with all these Halloween issues. Are they re-releasing any of the others or just the original? I think it'd be ultra-hyper-super-duper-uber sweet if they got the OK to put out the "producer's cut" of Halloween 6 on DVD, but I doubt that'd ever happen. Guest TheHulkster Report post Posted October 15, 2002 I've been looking for Scarface on DVD for a year and a half. It sucks just having the shitty 2 tapes set. Enter the Dragon is another DVD I can't find for the life of me.
The Dames 0 Report post Posted October 15, 2002 Anchor Bay....DAMN YOU!!!!! If the new Halloween is worth it, I'll get it. As for Scarface, there's still a lot of them left at Suncoast here in the city. Oh, Evenflow, the producers cut of H6 is FAR better than the original from all accounts. If only the DVD was a 2-discer with both of 'em. Dames

Guest Lethargic Report post Posted October 16, 2002 Speaking of hard to find. I've been wanting to get Ginger Snaps but I can't find a widescreen disc. Is this movie available in widescreen anywhere? Was it not shot widescreen? Anybody know? I have the same problem with Black Christmas. I haven't found a widescreen version of it at all. But I KNOW that it is widescreen. There's a special edition coming out so I'm hoping that will be widescreen.
