I have never really seen much mexican wrestling but recently saw the AAA When worlds Collide show and really liked it. I appreciate that this is a particularly good show but know i want to see more.

I am familiar with some people such as Shocker and Mil Mascaras but just wondered what peoples advice would be on what tapes to get hold of, etc.

Thanks

Ive never watched lucha before, and ive got a question as well.

How do you define Lucha? Sure its a wrestling style, but how would you define it as being different from other styles? Just wondering.

Curry,

AAA used to be the best promotion on the planet, but really went down the tubes. Stay away from current AAA, but track down tapes from the glory days of '94 if possible.

For current CMLL, best place to start is pay-per-views. The 3/17/00 event is their first outing and probably their best. Real good (although the middle lags a bit with the comedy match) and the main event won Observer MOTY, the only match from Mexico to do so. Shocker's on the card but he was still a rudo and doesn't do a whole bunch. And 32 guys wrestle on the show so you see a lot of folks.

The 3/30/01 show is really good from top to bottom (actually, the main event's pretty shitty, but better than you'd think given who's involved).

Mil Mascaras just showed up onn CMLL TV a week ago, but you'll have to go back to the 70's to really see the glory days.

Now, what is lucha? It's a style based around grace, high flying, and intricate matwork. The vast majority of matches are trios (3 on 3) with a captain on each side (a fall can end when you pin the captain or the other two members of the team). Lucha comes out right and tells you who the good guys (tecnicos) and bad guys (rudos) are. There are two refs, a tecnico one and a rudo one. Pretty much everyone has a gimmick and a mask (unless they lose it). You have to forget about American pro wrestling when you first watch, because its very weird and foreign and plays by its own rules. I could write a term paper but there's the cliff notes version.

in my opinion Lucha Libre is X Division, Cruiserweight, Toryumon style with insane bumps and dives to the outside. There are a few rules that sets Lucha Libre different from the average WWE match on Raw:

1. 2 out of 3 rule for all matches unless Silva is on the show

2. the show is mostly tag team matches of 3 vs 3 or 2 vs 2

3. the skits that are on the show pointless comedy bits or the kick ass Satanico laser beam evil laugh type.

4. the angles are usually revolve around personal grudges from the tag matches and not skits

5. luchadores don't use the same finish every time, as submissions, roll ups or cradles are use alot, the "ballsac" kick DQ is overused and oversold alot

not everybody moves like Rey Misterio Jr., and the Heavyweights are very boring especially Rayo de Jalisco, Capos, Puerto Ricans

its hard to explain but once you watch it over a long period of time it will grow on you, either you will like it or hate it.

just a mark's perspective

what to look for

First of all stay away from all of the Boriquas Pierroth Army stuff, Rayo de Jalisco, Mascara 2000, Universo 2000, Cien Casas, GIANT SILVA, Emilio Charles, Bestia Savaje, Scorpio Jr. These Luchadores will bore you to death unless you want to torture somebody stay away from this crap.

Get all of the title matches for Lightweight title, which is referred in CMLL as the Semi Completo campeon. Some stuff from the Year 2002:

Shocker vs Tarzan Boy title match

Shocker vs Dr Wagner title match

all tag matches of Shocker vs gdi

all tag matches of gdi vs Dr Wagner & Fuerza Guerrera & Blue Panther

Black Warrior's team vs Dr Wagner team

the feud of Black Warrior vs Black Tiger in tag matches

gdi vs Santo & Negro Casas tag title matches

get all of the cybernetico tournment elimation tag matches

Hijo de Rayo de Jalisco = Hombre Sin Nobre is somebody to look out for

Zimbido & Virus have the power of the Latino Heat Mullet and are great workers also

Shocker is 1000% Guapo and his entrances are some of the best in the business.

1. The White Fur Coat

2. M. Bison red neo nazi uniform

3. Aztec Warrior with feather headress

4. oversize yellow t-shirt

Is Lucha shown on american TV. There is absolutely no chance that any channel in britain would take the risk of showing it and that is a real bummer because it means the only way we can see it is to part with our hard earned cash.

I suppose it evens itself out because we get all the WWE ppvs for free over here whereas you have to pay upwards of $30 per show as i understand it.

The only channel that shows lucha is Galavision on Sat and Sun on various times of the day.

Thanks for all the help. i think I will definately pick up a copy of the first CMLL pay per view.

What would be the best site to get it from bearing in mind that I live in England and we have PAL vcrs. I would get it from Highspots.Com but i think that they simply do NTSC videos.

Any help?

Also Curry, if i ever get any money behind me (why wont you people employ me dammit :)) Then I am looking into buying some Lucha as well.

Im 95% sure that my VCR is NTSC compatable, so providing i am not breaking the law, and you send me the dosh for the blank videos, then i could tape it off to PAL and send it to you if you would like.

ChUnK!

Also BOB: I noticed on your site you charge $20 for your Lucha tapes. Do you only take dollars? Or would you accept £Sterling? If so, then how many £'s do you charge for your $20 tapes? FInally, how much do you charge to ship to England? Thanks, ChUnK!

people who can move like Rey Misterio:

Hombre Sin Nobre/Hijo de Rayo de Jalisco - has the ability to bust out insane submissions with headstands. But HSN also does the spotfest moves of backflips and cartwheels into kicks just like RVD.

Hijo de Santo - the man with the Silver Mask has done the arm drag move that Lucha haters dislike as Santo can spin around the opponet forever then hit a arm drag or headscissors takedown. His submissions of body scissors with armbar takedown is a site to be seen. Regular finisher is the Camel Clutch.

Black Warrior - is one of the craziest luchadores who does the suicida topes to the outside at full speed, often sending the opponet into the front row.

Black Tiger - well the Silver King has done the 619 move and does moonsaults along with some power bombs to win his matches. One of the best Rudos in Mexico as he works the "I'm From Japan" gimmick. Black Tiger is the only person that I have seen to be able to sell the Reverse and Invert Ranas in matches against Rey Misterio and others. Has been in a feud with Black Warrior this year.

Rey Bucannero & Ultimo Guerrero (guys in sig) - work a tag team match the way that Misterio & Kidman use to work the WCW Cruiserweight Tag Team division. The use of double team moves which they copy/sell/modify from old school teams is always a mark out moment. They tend to use alot of Midnight Express moves which is a good thing. Some of my favorite moves are Guerrero Special into takedown with elbow drop, the 360 flip hiptoss, the taunt pin, double team Boston Crap. Most of this moves were in matches against Shocker or Santo.

EDIT: I just saw the ROH match where American Dragon does the Cattle Mutlation, and Hombre Sin Nobre did a move very similar to it as he did the double arm move but instead of the bridge Hombre Sin Nobre did a Headstand on the shoulders of the opponet.

Well-I wouldn't dare infringe on RF's sales, so I loan my copies if you buy any 2 other tapes. You have to send it back as soon as Steve Lombardi wins the WWeeee title.

Go to VivaLaLuchaLibre.net. The site's not updated anymore, but it's very good in terms of acquainting you to the stars of lucha and giving you a good gist of what to look for. Be sure to surf around the entire site for awhile, because they have some really good articles and stuff.

For AAA, watch out for the guy formerly known as Essa Rios. Believe it or not, he uses the old DX theme music, which rules. Great high flyer. In CMLL, it's all about the Guerreros.

But check out VivaLaLuchaLibre.net. Highly recommended.

And Ricky Marvin can move like Rey Jr. Marvin is excellent. Same with Essa Rios (Papi Chulo now). And also the Havana Pitbulls, who now work MLW, work CMLL sometimes, so you'll occasionally catch them on Galavision.

But in both AAA and CMLL, you'd be surprised - even the big guys can do a lot of stuff. I've watched shit and got pissed that I didn't tape some matches, expecting them to suck becuz the guys were big, only for them to pull of some impressive moves.

I love watching AAA and CMLL on Galavision. I'm moving to Southern California next week, so I was wondering- Are there any lucha shows in places like Tijuana (which wouldn't be too far), or would I have to go to Mexico City?
