Guest AlwaysPissedOff Report post Posted November 23, 2002 Y-Gi-Oh! is kind of an aquired taste because it's bascially the Magic card game being animated. It's a not really ground-breaking or anything, so whether you like it or not depends on what you think of card games, in general. Also, with the voice changing bit, here's the background: Yugi found the Millienium Puzzle(the giant gold thing around his neck) and the Puzzle contains the spirit of an ancient Egyptian king/prince/whatever. Yugi and the spirit(who calls himself Yugi-Oh! among other names) can switch out with Yugi when he is dueling(I just know I misspelled that) and if you pay attention, you'll notice that not only does Yugi's voice change, but his physical body does, as well. The show isn't really complex or anything, but I'm really into it now, even though I hate Magic the Gathering.
Guest Kagato Otaku Report post Posted November 23, 2002 Jubuki - I enjoyed both Mushroom Samba and Toys in the Attic. I dig Ed's character alot, and random goofiness works for Bebop sometimes. I liked Cowboy Funk the same way. If they could cut any two eps of Bebop, I'd lose Heavy Metal Queen and Wild Horses. I still can't believe Wild Horses wormed its way onto the "Best Sessions" DVD. *pauses to revel in the flames* - Y'know, I never really did like Akira. I just don't think its the end-all be-all of anime, especially when its part of a much larger story. It's alright, but not one of my favorites. CP - Trigun's a hard anime to pin down, as the tone gets much darker toward the middle of the series. It's good, but loses some of the light-hearted comedy you may have liked from the first ep. Depends on what you're looking for. is Yu-Gi-Oh suppose to be good or is it just buthered to death Harmony Gold/Funmation style? From what I've been told it wasn't anything special either way. APO watches it, so if you're looking for any specific info I'd ask him.
Guest CED Ordonez Report post Posted November 23, 2002 Heavy Metal Queen is definitely the most forgettable CB session of the 26. It's a filler episode and admittedly quite a few Cowboy Bebop episodes are filler since most of the series is non-linear anyway. However, Heavy Metal Queen didn't even have anything big to offer and the whole plot of figuring out what "V.T." stood for was pretty weak. Also, I'm with Kagato in wondering how Wild Horses made it into the "Best Sessions" DVD I have to knock on DBZ for the obvious gripe, which is put best in the slogan, "Shut up and hit something." Some of the power-up scenes take way too long and I become a bit disinterested when the long winded speeches fill up a majority of the episode. And lest we forget the major Funimation flaw in that they ALWAYS SPOIL THE NEXT EPISODE IN THE PREVIEW~!
Guest Kagato Otaku Report post Posted November 23, 2002 That's one thing you can't blame on FUNi. DBZ has always had funky episode titles and previews. Crazy stuff like "Ahhh!! Goku is Super-Cool Confident Guy! His Mighty Blast Destroys Freeza!!" or "Cell Devours #18!! The Heavens Tremble; the Perfect God of Terror is Complete!!" That's just junk I made up, the real deal is often nuttier and more spoilery than that. The manga was available for a long while there, so most of the audience may have been spoiled already. Still odd that they give away the next episode in the title, though.

But for people like me, where it was actually the first time watching anything DBZ, I just found it counter-productive to end the episode with Vegeta and Goku in the middle of the duel then the previews tell me "Oh no! Vegeta cheapshots Goku and knocks him out and goes off to destroy Majin Buu by himself!"
Guest Kagato Otaku Report post Posted November 23, 2002 And I'm with you there, it is annoying. But FUNi's in a lose-lose situation there. If they ax the preview or warp it, the hardcores will gripe about them hacking up the show again. If they keep it, they'll be bitched out for spoiling the next show. DBZ is probably FUNi's weakest dubbed property, but they've done pretty okay since the days of "Look! I can see their parachutes!" and "See you...in the NEXT DIMENSION!!" I don't blame them for the previews, because that's the way they've always been. I'm not DBZ's or FUNi's A#1 and THE BEST~!! fan, but I can forgive them there. You can blame them for alot of other things though. OT - Wow, one week and two pages and Ricky's not here yet. I know homeboy's lurking around here somewhere. Oh well, I'll drag Chosyu here by his third toes if I have to.
Guest Renegade Report post Posted November 23, 2002 I really liked the fatal fury anime('s). Very good adaptation of the game.
Guest Special K Report post Posted November 23, 2002 Raza- could you reccomend some Lupin? My exposure has been limited. I've seen Cagliostro, Fuma clan, and the collection of Miyazaki eps. Man someone should really pick up Tylor. Best anti-war anime maybe ever.
Guest razazteca Report post Posted November 23, 2002 Lupin III: Mystery of Mamo movie I think Orion/Streamline did distribute a few episodes like, Abitross.
Guest shlidgn90 Report post Posted November 24, 2002 i know there has been some mention of miyazaki's movies. but his deserves to mentioned as the greatest anime ever. Spirted Away is this generations Fantasia and will probably be on every U.S film critics 10 best list. Just for the boundarie this movie will break, it has to be the greatest anime of all time. btw: after watching dragonball and the dragonball z lately on cartoon network. I can safely say that the older series is much better than the very repitive Z show.
Guest Special K Report post Posted November 25, 2002 On Miyazaki: Did Disney ever release castle in the sky? I want to see it. Agreed on the DBZ point. I like it alright, but it's a 9 season show that could have been condensed into 5 or 6 seasons. Watch the Trunks special to see what it could have been, as it's really good. Fast-paced, good story and character development within an hour, really good action sequences.
Guest shlidgn90 Report post Posted November 26, 2002 the miyazaki movies i know of that are on disney are kiki's delivery service, mononoke, and spirited away.

Guest Special K Report post Posted November 28, 2002 grave of the fireflies made me cry like a little bitch. It's fucking heartrending. While I could say it may be the best anime ever, it's like calling schilndler's list your favorite movie.
Guest Kagato Otaku Report post Posted November 29, 2002 grave of the fireflies made me cry like a little bitch. It's fucking heartrending. See, if they'd put that on the box instead of the usual Roger Ebert crap the DVD would be selling like gangbusters.
Guest CED Ordonez Report post Posted December 1, 2002 Pretty long time between mentions of Grave of the Fireflies. It's a really moving picture and the way it was told needed an animated film to fully bring it alive. On a side note, picked up the domestic copy of the Love Hina X-mas Special to replace my, ahem, "Hong Kong Special Edition" and was pretty shocked to find the domestic copy has been graphically altered in four different scenes. Three of them where aesthetic, but the one edit that did alter the look of the shot actually did make sense. I normally don't agree with editing anime, but this edit was actually smart. Still hate hate hate Kitsune's southern drawl in the English dub. IMHO, It's actually more annoying than Tenchi Muyo's English dub of Ayeka in ultra nasally mode (I'm sure a few of you know what I mean here) .
Guest Kagato Otaku Report post Posted December 1, 2002 So what was your gateway drug into anime? The one that made you stand up and say "Yes, I'd like to frivolously waste my extra capital on this useless and all-consuming hobby."? It can be anything, and doesn't necessarily have to be your first. Mine was dubbed Tenchi Muyo! and subbed All-Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku.

Guest CED Ordonez Report post Posted December 1, 2002 Sailor Moon. What? Seriously it brought me into the world of anime. Cowboy Bebop was the anime that rekindled my interest though.
Guest AlwaysPissedOff Report post Posted December 3, 2002 IMHO, It's actually more annoying than Tenchi Muyo's English dub of Ayeka in ultra nasally mode (I'm sure a few of you know what I mean here) . Oh yeah... Ayeka's English dub really grates on my damned nerves, especially when she starts yelling. So what was your gateway drug into anime? The one that made you stand up and say "Yes, I'd like to frivolously waste my extra capital on this useless and all-consuming hobby."? It can be anything, and doesn't necessarily have to be your first Without a shadow of a doubt, it has to be Robotech. I'd seen Voltron before and thought that was cool and all, but Robotech blew me the fuck away and from that point on, I was an anime fan for life.
Guest SP-1 Report post Posted December 3, 2002 I readily admit that I have not experience very much anime at all. But, I do own the OAV Tenchi Muyo! box set because I abso-frickin-lutey love that show. I've seen some DBZ but it's hit and miss with me, and a couple of movies. Akira, which I don't remember much of because it was long ago and the beginning of the Final Fantasy two-part. FF was interesting and one day I'll get around to renting the second one. But Tenchi is, by default of most experience with it, my current favorite. I watched some of Outlaw Star on CN when it first ran there, and I intend to watch the entire series sometime soon as a friend has the DVD set. So my experience is widening. Oh, and Princess Mononoke which was very good to me. I enjoyed it but have not desired to give it repeat viewings at all. Perhaps down the road I will watch it again. Guest EricMM Report post Posted December 3, 2002 I'd still have to say that Eva is tops as far as anime is concerned. It's got everything! Crazy ass mecha, twisted religious imagery, and fanservice fanservice fanservice! I also consider the end of eva to be the metal equivalent of doing stadium stair laps... Guest Kagato Otaku Report post Posted December 3, 2002 Cartoon Network announced this morning that they've acquired Lupin the Third, Trigun, and Reign for their new Adult Swim anime block. Lupin will start January 13th, and the others at a later date. I wouldn't be surprised to hear them get El-Hazard too, given that all three E-H series would be a good chunk of episodes and they've already got a good working relationship with Pioneer. Guest CED Ordonez Report post Posted December 3, 2002 On the same vein: (Source: Anime News Network) TechTV began broadcasting commercials for its upcoming "Anime Unleashed" program. The TV trailer includes footage from Serial Experiments Lain, Crest of the Stars and Betterman. Anime Unleashed is tentatively scheduled to premier on December 30th. Same source indicates that the third episode of Lupin The Third TV series, entitled "Hitler's Legacy" will not be aired in the initial run of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. Maybe you already knew this, CED. "Hitler's Legacy" won't even be on the Lupin III DVD set. Pioneer fears possible bad publicity from over-zealous types condemning the series, so they're "delaying" the episode. There's a possibility they may include it later.
