Thome to Phillies?

The Cleveland Plain Dealer website is reporting that Jim Thome will sign a 5-year $87.5 million dollar contract with the Phillies tomorrow.

 

Not that I necessarily disagree with him taking the money, but you know Indians fans are going to see as a slap to the face, since Thome said he wanted to end his career in Cleveland and turned down an offer for less money, but one that had a shitload of incentives for actually earning his money.

 

Any thoughts?

As a Twins fan I'm glad he's going to Philadelphia. What would be refreshing is for Thome to admit the money the Phillies offered was just to much to pass up, instead of saying it wasn't about the money.

As an Indians fan, I'm pissed, but if he does admit to it being about the money then I'll accept it with no problems.

 

But Philly almost has to win it all next year, because they're putting somewhere around $33 million a year with Thome and David Bell alone, and they still have an offer to Tom Glavine on the table. That's going to be in thr 45-50 million range on those three guys alone if they sign Glavine.

Yeah, but at least the Phillies appear to be trying to put together a team, as opposed to the Indians, who are firmly stuck in "free agent fire sale" mode. I'm sure the money was an issue, but having a friend on the team (David Bell) and an apparent commitment to win doesn't hurt either.

 

Though, personally, I think he's absolutely insane to go to Philly, where they'll likely put a contract on his head the first night he goes 0-4.

Nah. Philly has really mellowed on the Phillies lately (who can blame us?). He'll get his share of boos, but nothing too bad.

 

Now, if he was on the Eagles, that'd be a totally different story...

The Phillies are in buying mode this offseason because they cleared a lot of money from departing free agents. For example.....

 

Terry Adams $2.7 million

Robert Person $6.25 million

Doug Glanville $4 million

 

That's almost $13 million right there to cover Thome. So when you take that into consideration, they're not adding much salary.

Mike Sirotka did that when he signed with the Cubs.

 

Background: Toronto traded for Sirotka last year, he was injured and never played a game for them while still collecting his salary, the Jays covered his medical expenses also

 

The Jays offered him a low base salary with incentives because they wanted to see if his surgically repaired arm would fall off or not. The Cubs offered him a high base salary, so he took the offer. His statement was that he didn't know how much longer he could pitch, so he wanted to make as much money now as possible.

 

While I think he's a bastard for leaving a club that took care of him through his injury, I respect his honesty in saying it was for the money.

I like Marlon a bit too, but he has no D. He has to set up in short-right field to get to a lot of balls. Move Polanco to second, where his batting numbers won't hurt us, and package Travis and Marlon and get us some middle relief.

When you're 31, making $300,000 a year isn't an attractive option. Sirotka needed to take the best offer because its improbable that he'll ever be a quality major league pitcher again.

 

As for the Phillies, I'm already excited about this season.
