Guest DiabloIIFreak1010 Report post Posted December 6, 2002 Mine has to be System Of A Down's "Damnit" (Blink 182 Cover) They took it, slowed it down, made it very depressing, and even put it on Acoustic. Just amazing. I loved it.
Guest The Man in Blak Report post Posted December 6, 2002 Hendrix's "All Along The Watchtower" would have to be at the top of my list. Just an amazing guitar de force that sounds very little like the original Dylan-penned track. Nirvana's cover of "In the Pines" (or "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", as they call it) on their Unplugged session should get some props as well.
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted December 6, 2002 Whenever this thread pops up, I delight in being able to once again express my love for Talking Heads' glorious redo of Al Green's "Take Me to the River." Also, let me pimp Elvis Costello's "(What's So Funny 'bout) Peace, Love and Understanding," as well as give a shout out to Burning Sensations, for their channeling the spirit of Lou Reed to do a cover of the Modern Lovers' "Pablo Picasso." Guest Harry Hood Report post Posted December 6, 2002 If you like Jimi's cover of Watchtower than you should try Dave Matthew's Watchtower. I really like the Will It Go Roun din Circles and Sneakin' Sally through tthe Alley covers done by Phish. Dave's cover of Redemption song is real good. Sublime had a nice cover of Scarlet Bergonia's, originally by the DEad. There are many manhy more I'm fogetting to, which I'll prob. get to later.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted December 6, 2002 Dave Matthews' cover of watchtower is pathetic. Hendrix totally smokes it in every single aspect, IMO. I really dig Tool's covers of No Quarter and Daytripper.

Guest Harry Hood Report post Posted December 6, 2002 Yeh Tool's cover of No Quarter is damn fine. But I still stand by my guns that Dave's watchtower is fantastic.

Guest The Man in Blak Report post Posted December 6, 2002 Hendrix's "Watchtower" is like standing right in the middle of a Vietnamese firefight. Dave's "Watchtower" is like a junkie smoking a blunt and watching a documentary about Vietnam, thinking that it must have been "pretty killer" to have been over there. There's absolutely no comparison. I'll tack on another song to the list, though: nine inch nails' take on "Dead Souls" (Joy Division)
Guest Harry Hood Report post Posted December 6, 2002 OK, does anyone else find it incredibly rage inducing when you hear someone call a song an original when it's a remake, like if someone talks about how great a song Metallica's whiskey in the jar is, or pearl jam's last kiss? Guest spiny norman Report post Posted December 7, 2002 I agree with Talking Heads's Take Me To The River, that was great. John Lennon's version of Stand By Me is brilliant. Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares 2 U killed the Prince original. Freddie Mercury's The Great Pretender Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower (obviously) Plus, I thought the Moulin Rouge version of Roxanne was really really good. Guest Incandenza Report post Posted December 7, 2002 Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares 2 U killed the Prince original. Technically, Prince didn't record that song until after Sinead O'Connor scored a hit with it. I also want to add the Flaming Lips' covers of Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out of My Head" and Radiohead's "Knives Out" are both excellent, AND superior to the originals. To be fair, Whiskey in the Jar is not really credited to one band....its an Irish Drinking Song. But Metallica was definitely inspired by Thin Lizzy's, no question. And what a great drinking song it is.. Personally, i think Metallica's cover of 'Am I Evil?' is done to perfection, so much so that i prefer it over the original. When it comes to covers, few do it better than Metallica. Illusion - Won't go there with GNR

B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted December 7, 2002 I did like Metallica's cover "Die, Die My Darling" better than the Misfits original version. I agree here. While I like the Misfits, Metallica kicked that songs ass. I also would like to state that I agree with Illusion about "Am I Evil?". That is one of the five best covers I've ever heard. It's almost too good. Oh, and the Soundgarden version of "Cop Killer" is from a UK Import I have entitled Digging the Garden of Sound. It's live from 1993, and it's just as badass as it gets. There's also a killer tune entitled "Kyle Petty, Son of Richard" that cracks me up.
Guest godthedog Report post Posted December 7, 2002 yes! i get to be the first one to mention jeff buckley's cover of 'hallelujah' this time! (originally by leonard cohen) there's also cowboy junkies' cover of 'sweet jane' (by VU). tori amos's version of 'new age' (ibid) is really growing on me too. and her cover of '97 bonnie and clyde' is CREEPY. nirvana did a cool ass cover of 'here she comes now' (ibid). i don't know if paul mccartney's reworking of 'golden slumbers' can be considered a cover, since he changed the tune, but that's one of the greatest songs ever recorded. mazzy star did a version of 'wild horses' that i prefer to the stones. some beatles covers: 'money', 'twist and shout', and ESPECIALLY 'long tall sally'. Guest Incandenza Report post Posted December 8, 2002 I thought it was the Sundays that did a "Wild Horses" cover, not Mazzy Star.
Guest Harry Hood Report post Posted December 8, 2002 On my computer i have versions of both sweet jane and wild horses by mazzy star, but i'm not relaly a big fan of either, although i do like her as a singer
Guest EricMM Report post Posted December 8, 2002 I'd like to say that Goldfinger's cover of Rio is excellent, as well as their covers of 99 Red Balloons and Miles Away. But that's of course because, goldfinger is awwsome! Although with the lastest album we're ecking into "was" territory...
Guest godthedog Report post Posted December 8, 2002 That Mazzy Star cover of "Wild Horses" is fantastic. I love that chick's voice. mmm...hope sandoval. i got a picture of her pinned up on my wall. she's wearing a thin t-shirt, with a little nipple action. their one big album, 'so tonight that i might see', is also fantastic. one of the great lost records of 1993. Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted December 8, 2002 I've got the Sundays cover of "Wild Horses," but must check out this Mazzy Star business. Also, it's not exactly a standard, but I found a live cover of Elliott Smith doing John Lennon's "Jealous Guy." Absolutely heartbreaking and great--exactly the kind of song that fits him. All the more reason to make me think that Elliott Smith is the rightful heir to the various Beatles' retired pop crown...
Guest The Man in Blak Report post Posted December 8, 2002 Actually, I've always been find of Lou Reed's rocked out version of "Jealous Guy"...though, in all reality, I'm not sure you can really drek up such a good song.
