Hey Paul, you asshole!

why can't you not like the beatles? Hell i have nothing against them, but it's not something i listen to all the time. Like nirvana. I think they're ok, but they don't grab me. Nothing wrong with that. Oh and Incandenza, wasn't Gibby Haynes (butthole surfers) in the dead milkmen? or am i just being random and stuff?

anyone is entitled to hating the beatles, but proclaiming nightly your hatred for them without giving any reasons whatsoever is akin to going to the puro board, saying "HEY, TOSHIAKI KAWADA SUCKS! HE SUCKS, HE SUCKS, HE SUCKS!" and then leaving. it appears ignorant & completely unfounded, and anyone who does it will promptly be laughed off the board.

No, but both bands started off in the 80s in Texas. Without looking this up, I think they both were from Austin.

This is a little of the subject, but what is up with everyone having a hard-on for Our Lady Peace? I just don't get what the big deal is abour them. Do I have to be Canadian to be into them? I really don't know any Americans who dig them. What's my problem?

i don't believe i've ever seen anybody really pimping our lady peace on the board, but i'll say my peace about them. (AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!)

i love their first album, 'naveed'. love it love it love it. just a great straight-out rock album. 'clumsy' had some good stuff on it (mainly the singles), but overall it was pretty mediocre. now even their singles suck.

i saw them live in 98 too, & they put on a hell of a show. they dumbed it down quite a bit for the people who were there for third eye blind (only playing all their singles & a jeff buckley cover), but it was still awesome.

I don't particularly like the Beatles, myself. Musically they left alot to be desired, and I never thought and of their lyrics were "Brilliant". From my perspective, their best songs are the ones Harrison wrote (Notably "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"). Harrison was a pretty good rhythm guitarist, and Ringo didn't suck at the drums but McCartney and Lennon just seemed worthless to me. Trite pop songs are still trite pop songs decades after their creation.

In reality, I think, Harrison should have joined up with a good lead player (like he did on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps") and played his catchy little tunes. I think Harrison would have made a good additon to Cream, actually.

Oh well, everyone has the right to think how they want about music. Unfourtunately.

How did Gibby Haynes come up? Anyway, Dead Milkmen are from Philadelphia, not Texas.

D'oh! Then where did I get this Texas idea from? Maybe they recorded a record there.

As for how Gibby Haynes entered the equation, I made a Dead Milkmen reference in the topic title (it's from the song "Ringo Buys a Rifle"), which prompted saturnmark to bring up Haynes.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Dead Milkmen line in the title. Not sure about the Deam Milkmen connection to the Butthole Surfers or Texas. I always associated the Butthole Surfers with Scrath Acid, who formed in Texas at the same time, and so by association also with Jesus Lizard who's from Chicago. I kinda associate Dead Milkmen with the Dwarves (don't know why) who were also from Chicago. But those are pretty strained links.

I'm American, and Our Lady Peace is my favorite band.

It's hard for me to adequatley describe why I like different music, but I'll give it a go.

1) The Lyrics. at times poetic, at others bludgeonly insightful. I also like that their lyrics always mean something, which you can't say for a lot of bands.

2) Musical talent. At the live show I went to, they would just pull out random solos which had the whole audience captivated. It's was even more impressive to me since a lot of the fans where teeny boppers that were only there for "Somewhere Out There."

3) Raine Maida's voice. He can do things that I've never heard anyone do. He voice is an aquired taste, though. I've heard some people say that it's the worst voice they've ever heard, and then after listening to it for a while, become totally enthralled by it.

Maybe, but Lennon and McCartney weren't writing trite pop songs from 1965 on. Particularly Lennon.

And I want to use this forum to dispel a rumor about anything being "just a matter of opinion." Fuck all that. If you have an opinion and feel strongly about it, then you owe it to yourself to express it and not qualify it by saying "but that's just my opinion." I'm telling suckas how it is, and I'd appreciate other people doing that as well.

Wow- maybe you could've given actual reasons for not liking the beatles instead of trying and i stress trying to be funny

Well, what kind of reasons would you want? Let me see, that's right, I don't like anything they've done. I think every song I've heard from them has completely blown. How the hell are you supposed to explain why you don't like somebody? That's pretty easy to figure out. Either you like a band's songs or you don't like a band's songs. You really need that explained to you? I don't need you to explain why you like them.

And nothing I said was meant to be funny in the least. It's my opinion. You have the opinion that you think the band is good for some reason. I don't. That's pretty simple to figure out. And everytime I see somebody blowing more smoke up the ass of that over-hyped band I'm gonna say the same thing because I can't stand them and I'll be cheering as soon as Paul and Ringo join the other two.

Saying that you don't have explain your opinion on a message board is ludicrous. Every thread would be like this:

Person 1: Hey, I like that band.

Person 2: I don't. They suck.

Person 1: Oh, okay.

Not really conducive to discussion. It's the actual explanation that creates discussion. And until someone goes so far as to justify their opinion, I assume that it's based on closed-minded ignorance.

First of all, I want to remove myself from others by making it known that I do like The Beatles, a lot. But I can see why and how Beatles-haters are motivated, because I used to be one in their contingency.

First off, and most music fans seem to agree, most pre "Rubber Soul" stuff was droll and uninteresting, and at least half of it not even theirs. Sure there are some exceptions ("Hide Your Love Away" and perhaps "I'll Follow The Sun" for starters). And I think a lot of people equate the Beatles with that early image. The black suits, bowl cuts, heads bobbing rhythmically belting out strains of "She Loves You" to venues full of screaming girls in poodle skirts. And I think a lot of todays music fanbase has this thing with feeling as though you have to be thrilled with a band's entire body of work before you can like them (being a Metallica fan I encounter this almost weekly: "Sure "Ride The Lightning" "Master of Puppets" and "...And Justice For All" are unmatched in the genre... but metallica SUX!! They sold out!!") So many macho metalites feel it a shot to their masculinity to like what was, at one time, a glorified boy band.

Plus, The Beatles are built up so much that it can be exhausting. And Rock n' Roll retrospective flaunts the Beatles acheivements in amounts that almost seem doctored. It can get annoying. Even now I will agree with people who say that The Beatles are often overrated. Plus, and I hate to stereotype Heavy Metal fans as I am a big fan of Metal myself, but if you've EVER been to a concert you'll see plenty of guys who sorta fit a mold, these metal fans would never admit to liking anything that is popularly accepted by society.

Finally, The Beatles (save George) have become shells of their formal selves. I even feel John got a little too self important in the seventies. Ringo is a charicature now as is Paul. And in keeping with my idea that some people have to like someone's entire discography before liking them, it's hard for a select few to bring themselves to admit that these old men at one time, were music visionaries (I run into a lot of Pink Floyd detractors for this same reason.)

In my opinion the late Beatles stuff is as close as mainstream America will ever get to being musically literate. That was the genius of The Beatles I always thought, they were so popular and generated such a following in the eary sixties that their fanbase would follow them into hell or (even worse depending on who you ask) innovative musical experiments.

So, in closing, do not label me as a Beatles detractor. Label me as a Recovering Beatles Detractor, trying to help the rest of humanity understand why soem of us are the way we are/were.

wow, this reaches cynical profit-like levels of mindlessness. it's got the sarcastic "let me lash out at everything" tone, the expression of joy that somebody's dead...everything.

I'm pretty indifferent to them.

They've got a few songs I like, and I can easily see why so many people consider them the best band ever, it's just not something I'm really into at all.

Sorry that I disagreed with you again. That happens in life sometimes. Hating the Beatles because I don't like their music...how mindless! That makes no sense at all! I didn't know that if you hated the Beatles you hated everything but thanks for letting me know.

Hating the Beatles is one thing. You can do that all you want, and there are probably a whole bunch of people out there who agree with you.

Wishing death and/or gloating about someone's death is completely different. You seem to be backtracking here, buddy.

Backtracking? When did I go back on that? I still think it's a better world without them. No backtracking at all.

Since they seemed to be allowed to insult people in the puro folder, I see nothing wrong with calling this guy--who's argument against the Beatles is nothing more than "just 'cuz I don't like 'em"--an idiot shouldn't be considered flaming.

I've got a lot more respect for the material where they really went out and experimented, turning out some really original interesting stuff. The early pop rock stuff I despise because it's fluff designed to make girls squeal and nothing more.

Also, Regarding music and puro...

Kawada > Beatles.

In fact, I'll go ahead and say it...

Taue < Metallica.

And what is wrong with that? Why is not OK to like something because you simply don't think it's good? Isn't that the ONLY reason to like or dis-like something? I'm not gonna write an encyclopedia length essay and try to dissect all the reasons I don't like something just to appease a bunch of morons on a message board. If you don't understand that you're just plain retarded. It's called an opinion. My opinion on their music is that it blows. There's no cosmic reasoning for it. There's no "well, I don't like them because of this or that", I don't like them simply because I think their songs are crap. Not just crap but very annoying crap for the most part. I've never heard anything from them that was worth anything more than being background music for a scene in a movie. I don't even think the Beatles are even close to being the best band from their generation much less one of the best bands of all time. They're nothing but the N'Sync/Backstreet Boys of their generation and if that band existed today, the people that worship them would hate them. But since most people have grown up with 30 years of Beatles propganda shoved down their throats nobody can imagine that somebody might think they suck. I do. Case closed. If having a different opinion makes me an idiot then put a big idiot sign around my neck and I'll wear it proudly.

Godthedog gets it. Move on. This will go nowhere. I just wanted to get my opinion out there just like you guys did. But there's no point in arguing over things like this over and over, it will always lead to stupidity because it's simply a matter of opinion. I will never change anybody else's opinion on it and you'll never change mine. Because it's just like what Uma says in Pulp Fiction. You're either a Beatles man or an Elvis man. You can't be both. Me? I'm an Elvis man.

And for the record I don't like the Rolling Stones either so BAH!

Actually, after thinking about it, I think I do hate metallica more than Taue. I've at least enjoyed a few of his tag matches with the usual suspects. Metallica produced a few minutes of Cliff Burton goodness that I don't despise. So in retrospect, Taue > Metallica.
