WHY push hosses?

Recommended Posts

Guest AndrewTS

Okay--for some reason, WWE seems to want to ignore the trends and shove big, ugly, talentless hosses down our throats. They recently signed Nathan Jones. Judging from the picture, he's freakish looking, roided to them gills, and likely sucks and never will amount to anything.

WHY DO THEY DO THIS?!

I tried to see if maybe past hosses worked...

Hulk Hogan = one of the worst wrestlers ever--charisma, gimmick, and theme made him a star.

Vader = menacing, skilled, and his series with Sting is legendary. He and Cactus had a classic match. Legend in Japan.

Undertaker = Best hoss the WWE's had in a long time. Isn't necessarily a draw, but is basically always over, and the marks are into him. Made certain that prissy fairy HBK put over Stone Cold.

Barry Windham = I heard this guy was really good back in the day--although by the time he went to the WWF and then his last WCW stint, he was over the hill. Could've probably been huge if Vince snagged him early and Hogan wasn't in the top spot.

Scott Hall = Jobber to the Stars. Never quite made it to that top spot. Co-starred in horrific nWo revival of 2002, before boozing it up again and needing to be fired. Currently in NWA: TNA I think.

Kevin Nash = One of the lowest drawing champ ever, part of a failed attempt to recreate Hogan's success. Co-starred in the horrific nWo revival of 2002. Has not wrestled more than 3 matches in his entire contract now due to injuring himself so quickly.

Leg Luger = More of a hoss-oid. Irritating on the stick, was a decent wrestler in late 80's and early 90's.

Brutus Beefcake = ...no comment.

Bradshaw = he sucks, and he can barely get heat in his home state without name dropping.

Faarooq = Past his prime, didn't really draw as WCW champ. Could be a good road agent.

Silva, Kurrgan = bombed miserably.

Rikishi = Heat machine wildly cheers him. His big heel push was dismal. He makes smarks and some marks cringe.

Mark Henry = long term contract, waste of money

Big Show = long term contract, waste of money part deux.

Brock Lesnar = another hoss-oid. After months upon months of a Godlike push, he is finally getting over--but not as a heel like they wanted. Jury's out on this one.

Billy Gunn = a hoss-oid, again. NOTHING WILL GET THIS FUCKER OVER!! NOTHING!! NOTHING!! He could personally give out 100 dollar bills to the crowd and they still would not give a shit.

The Godwinns = Yeah, right...

Albert, Hugh Morrus, blah blah = no personality, few skills, will likely never get over.

Any ones I missed likely sucks way too much to waste any time on. And odd how Vince's most successful champs, besides Hogan, were not hosses. Stone Cold, the Rock (hossoid, though), Bret Hart, Triple H (2K-2K1), etc weren't hosses, and NONE of the gigantic fucks they're signing up have any champs as precedents working in their favor.

So someone explain to me...why, why, WHY do they push hosses? Something logical, please. Even if the WWE isn't logical.

Scott Hall had a great feud with Shawn Michaels, which helped to keep the mid 90s from sucking completely, and started the most popular faction in Wrestling that should account for something. True he couldn't control himself, and he sucks now, but at one point he was a viable draw. As for why Vince pushes these guys: I think it always harkens back to Hulk Hogan and Andre. These guys brought Vince a shitload of money so he wants them again. He just doesn't understand that the 80s are over.

Yeah, I was thinking of the ladder match in the back of my mind, but I forgot it by the time I got to Hall on the list. That Hall and that HBK are long gone, replaced with Alky-Hall and the Backbreak Kid.

And back then, talent wasn't an issue if you were getting a push, and there were far fewer outstanding workers like we have now. For every Steamboat or Dynamite Kid, you'd have about 7 JYD's or Brutus Beefcakes.

Because Jim Ross needs something to blow his load to.

That is the reason.

Cause if it pisses off the smarks, then the WWE has to do it. Jim Ross says he likes the young talent.. but hes full of crap. Its better to please some fat guy then do whats best for the company. When was this about wrestling anyway?

Let's be fair though...don't forget that Nash was a central part of an angle that helped revolutionize wrestling, and indirectly led the HUGE success of the WWF in the late 90's.

Just saying - you're awfully quick to point out the man's faults, but give credit where credit's due.

I went to a Raw house show last night and Kane vs. Batista was definitely in the negative stars. They blew everything, including the spinebuster Batista used for the win.

Guys, there should be a variety of wrestlers in an organization. A fed full of cruisers won't make money just as a fed full of hosses won't. You need a healthy mix.

And not everyone, hoss or cruiser, was meant to main event. Please let us not forget that.

Hosses provide entertainment to the masses, just as mid-sized wrestlers and cruisers do. The original post mention several guys who drew pops from the crowd, including Rikishi, Farooq (during the APA stint), Nash, Vader.

So...Hosses get pushed because that's what JR wants.

HHH gets pushed because that is what he and Stpehanie want.

Big Show gets the title because that is what Vince wants.

HBK gets the title because that is what HHH wants.

...

I can see why this company is losing so much money now.

No one is stopping and saying...

"Hey...what do the fans want?"

Good point Buffy, people act like Albert is gonna headline Wrestlemania. And for all the hate Rikishi gets, you would be shock to hear the reponse he gets.

Big Guys grab attention - little guys don't.

Hogan is NOT one of the worst wrestlers ever. There have been PLENTY worse.

Anybody that says Hogan is the worst wrestler ever obviously hasn't seen Hogan vs Flair Bash at the Beach 94, because Hogan takes Flair back.......waaaaaaaaaaay back to the old school rockin' the stepover armbars and such.

Nash, Luger, Big Show.....all way worse then Hogan.

Too bad they never really gave Vader a long enough push to get him over. He's probably the most skilled of all those guys.

So I guess that means Batista's not ready to ME yet if he can't hit a spinebuster. Stupid HOSS.

Vince did have him back in 84/85, but let him slip away sometime after the first WrestleMania. Barry's place was the 1980's NWA, I don't think he fit in with the WWF crowd of the day.

Heh, I read a report of that show last night. Batista apparently blew a hiptoss and a bodyslam (yes, that's what the person said). I wonder what the excuse will be this time - there were no video cameras and only 4000 people in attendance.

As for Nash, I would say that Hogan was the central part of the nWo, and not him.

It really doesn't matter if hosses can wrestle. The question is... do they make money?

Hogan: YES!!!!!!

Andre: YES!!!!!!

Warrior: Until his run as champ, he was the main event on all the B-Shows with the IC Title so he had to draw some people.

Sid: Could have been great for WCW in 93, if he hadn't tried to kill Arn. Useful, but not the main guy.

Kevin Nash: Useful, till bad run as champ.

Vader: Great heel champ

Undertaker: A draw since 92.

-----------------------

I could name more but you get the pictgure. Hosses can make money if they have charisma. THAT'S why Nathan Jones is useless.

This is why Buffy isn't JR. You don't see Albert main eventing. JR DOES! This is the same Albert that was given the Intercontinental Title--the SECOND biggest title in the company at the time--to ALBERT last year.

Thank you, whoever greenlighted for Lance to take the title off him.

If you ask Vince or JR who the future of the company is, they'll likely say Kane or BATISTA!! JR would definitely say Albert.

Oh, and lookie at Brock.

And what do these hosses have in common? Pushed heavily despite not really being over. Kane was a little bit over with his goofy gimmick, but "Kanenites," Kane-a-roonies, "freaks are cool" blah blah--that's a midcard gimmick, and he wasn't any more than midcard over.

Brock was pushed to the main event--SHOVED forcibly in the title picture...and why? Over? No. Good matches? HELL NO! He's a hoss-oid? YUP! We have a winner.

WWE talent policy basically is: "are you over, putting on good matches, busting your ass to entertain the fans? Oh, too bad. Fuck off, go job to that hoss we yanked up from OVW a couple months ago. Sure, okay, fans don't give a shit about him, but I like his 'look.' Hey, if you get over enough, we'll let you job to our fatass hoss champion in the main event of a throwaway Pay Per View!"

Who needs talent, charisma, and fan response when you have roids and an overactive pituitary?

Let's be fair though...don't forget that Nash was a central part of an angle that helped revolutionize wrestling, and indirectly led the HUGE success of the WWF in the late 90's.

Just saying - you're awfully quick to point out the man's faults, but give credit where credit's due.

Yeah, Vince no longer had a use for him, so WCW signed this former WWF Champion and his buddy to a huge contract, and some clever booking and storytelling, along with their charisma, made for an entertaining angle. He got lazy, put on weight, was still pushed, flaunting the fact that he didn't give a shit about the business like a badge of honor, killed the streak of Wrath and Goldberg, and helped drive the company into the toilet--all while putting on the worst matches of his career. Yay for him. Credit where credit is due.

I said ONE OF, not THE. Luger's better than Hogan, though. And he had a good match with Flair, yeah, that's impressive. And refresh my memory-wasn't that Hogan's first match in WCW...where he won the title? And invited in his buddies, made Flair look like a fool, had Cactus and Austin released, had Steamboat demoted until he had a career-ending injury, AND built up to that incredible Beefcake-Hogan main event at Starrcade? Of course, I think that was before he pussified Vader, too.

Fuck if I know, I wasn't watching WCW then.

How about some recent examples?

And Sid "useful?" For WHAT? Comedy when he fucks up his promos or blows a move horribly? The guy is slightly better than Nash and makes Kane look like Ricky Steamboat.

If the WWE love 'hosses' so much, how come they don't go after the ultimate philly, Aja Kong? When I said 'philly', I mean in a Black Beauty sort of way. She is very talented, does great rope work and her match calling is virtually unsurpassed. Even JR made a mention.
